ENDGAME | PIT PUSH | SPEED FARM BARBARE
Build Overview
Rob2628 brings back a classic with full force: the
Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian build. After three weeks playing Whirlwind, he delivers a HOTA setup that rivals it in iconic fun gameplay while still putting out solid DPS even at the highest levels. On target dummies, he records hits between 150 and 400 trillion damage, and claims the build can comfortably clear T12 as well as Pits up to level 130 without breaking a sweat.
The proposed build is a true "one-button smash": keep your shouts active, maintain Iron Skin, and the rest is just hammering. No weapon swaps required — unlike the hybrid Whirlwind+HOTA setups of the past, this version is purely Hammer-based, fueled by Aspect of the Warpath instead of the channeling aspect. Rob emphasizes the semi-ranged playstyle made possible by the Fisher rune, which lets you smash from several meters away and play it safe.
Three variants are available in the planner: a recommended Immortal version (the main one, built around
Endurant Faith and
Melted Heart of Selig), a more offensive DPS Selig variant, and a full DPS Resolve Stacker setup designed for extreme pushing (Pit 140+). The Immortal version is the one detailed below — it covers 99% of needs, guarantees invincibility, and still cranks out hundreds of trillions of damage.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Total immortality through the
Endurant Faith +
Melted Heart of Selig combo (400 life is enough, AFK possible on Bosses) - Massive DPS: hundreds of trillions of damage, clears T12 and Pit 130 effortlessly
- Iconic HOTA playstyle, intuitive single-button spam after shouts
- Semi-ranged variant with the Fisher rune to stay safe and freeze packs at range
- Full synergy with the Berserk set: shouts feed Crucible, and the Hammer shares the same polearm expertise
Cons
- Blizzard forgot to make both HOTA chests compatible with
Banished Lord's Talisman, so you're locked into The Relentless Heart - Slightly slower than Whirlwind in pure farming (Rob admits preferring Whirlwind for that criterion)
- Call of the Ancients has a cast animation — Rob prefers Wrath of the Berserker
- Sanctifications hard to farm to push beyond Pit 130
Recommended Gear
Loot Table
The Immortal setup's core relies on six key pieces.
Heir of Perdition brings a massive crit chance boost — Rob recommends aiming for at least 90% to fully capitalize on the multiplier. The Relentless Heart is the central chest: it drops from Beast in the Ice (easily farmable in Nightmare Dungeons) and applies a debuff stacking up to 3 times for 90% increased damage, making it a better choice than
Mantle of Mountain's Fury (which requires earthquakes, now difficult to trigger without tech runes).
On the defensive side,
Endurant Faith combined with
Melted Heart of Selig unlocks total immortality as soon as you reach the standard thresholds (400 life, 500 fury). For the ring slot,
Ring of Starless Skies remains a staple of any Barbarian build. The amulet is
Banished Lord's Talisman, essential for generating the Overpower charges that fuel the entire damage mechanic.
For weapons, expertise stays on the polearm since HOTA works with any two-handed weapon.
Ramaladni's Magnum Opus brings its Overpower stacks, and
Edgemaster's Aspect goes on the mace for Fury regen. For the pants, the same foundation as the Whirlwind build is kept —
Aspect of Heavenly Strength allows wielding a two-handed weapon as a one-hander, a hard requirement for polearm expertise.
The two alternative variants (DPS Selig and Full DPS Resolve Stacker) are visible in the grid above: the first remains nearly indestructible but swaps
Endurant Faith for
Banished Lord's Talisman and
Edgemaster's Aspect; the second drops Melted Heart in favor of a full stacker setup built for Pits 140+. For 99% of players, the Immortal version presented here is more than enough.
Horadric Seal S13
The Season 13 Horadric Seal rounds out the kit. The charms selected for this setup amplify Fury regen and Overpower generation while reinforcing raw resistance. The talisman pairs perfectly with
Banished Lord's Talisman in the Cube: the two pieces reinforce each other and feed the Overpower → Hammer of the Ancients loop. Refer to the viewer below for the exact seal configuration and the detailed placement of each charm.
Gameplay Tips
The rotation is deliberately simple. Before an engagement, chain the three shouts —
Rallying Cry,
Challenging Shout,
War Cry — then activate
Iron Skin for the shield layer. After that, it's a "one button" build: smash
Hammer of the Ancients and let Berserking run.
Wrath of the Berserker is the recommended ultimate since it now lasts 16 seconds (after the latest patch) and amplifies Fury regen.
Call of the Ancients remains a valid alternative for extreme pushing (more damage but a longer cast animation).
On Bosses and end-game Bosses, you can literally go AFK: the 400 life / 500 Fury thresholds guarantee invincibility, and the Hammer keeps hitting for 400 trillion on its own. For general farming, Rob recommends running the Fisher rune on HOTA — it turns the skill into a semi-ranged attack, which lets you freeze packs with the Ful rune, teleport via the Bac rune, and stay safe even in loaded Pits. The Quake rune remains viable for those who prefer pure melee, but it loses some DPS and forces you to face-tank.
For the shouts, choose the runes based on your goal: the Fire rune on Challenging Shout adds 20% damage (ideal in the Immortal version), while the Bal rune brings more toughness for builds without
Endurant Faith. If you're aiming for Pit 140+,
Aspect of Limitless Rage remains a must, and a ring focused on Lucky Hit Chance can replace
Ring of Starless Skies to amplify damage on static targets (Sigil of Subversion, Bosses).
Skill Tree
The tree is intentionally compact. We max
Hammer of the Ancients, take the Overpower passives (Size Matters and the 20x multiplier) instead of scaling crit chance on the tree (already handled by gear). The Basic section stays empty: no generator needed, Berserking and the shouts feed Fury. The three shouts + Iron Skin form the defensive base, and the ultimate is a choice between Wrath of the Berserker (recommended) and Call of the Ancients.
Mercenary S13
The mercenary engaged on this build is Subo, who serves primarily as a utility support. His Wired Trap skill provides crowd control on packs, taking pressure off the Barbarian while he smashes. The synergy stays subtle but useful in high Pits, where freeze and entrap open the cast windows for shouts and the ultimate. The reinforcement slot can be tuned to the content, but Subo already covers most situations.
Paragon
Five boards structure the Paragon progression. We start on the base board with the Exploit glyph for the Vulnerable multiplier. We move to Carnage with the
Might glyph, then Blood Rage with
Challenger. The Warbringer board hosts
Wrath to boost Wrath of the Berserker. The final board is Flawless Technique with
Dominate: Rob chose that one over the classic version because HOTA requires no weapon swap (the weapon stays on the mace), so Flawless Technique unlocks a free 5% crit chance bonus — valuable as long as gear isn't fully Sanctified. With around 90% crit chance outside paragon, you reach an effective 95%.
