Summary of the most impactful changes
Patch 3.1.0 marks a clear turning point in the Diablo IV meta. The Paladin steps out of the shadows with a massive buff package that thrusts it to the forefront. The Warlock receives the same treatment: reinforced uniques, buffed aspects, the class finally becomes competitive in endgame. The Sorcerer
Ball Lightning explodes with deep structural changes to projectile size and associated multipliers. On the flip side, Druid Companion builds take a hard hit through the Shepherd's Aspect nerf, and
Dance of Knives falls back significantly. The Mythic Unique 3.0 overhaul also reshapes the crafting rules for the entire community.
Major BUFF
Ball Lightning (Sorcerer)
- Ball Lightning projectile size now scales with skill ranks, a structural change that significantly increases area coverage.
- Cain's Wild Lightning rises to up to +750% maximum damage.
- Fundamental Release moves to 30% / 90% depending on conditions.
- This triple buff consolidates Ball Lightning as the go-to endgame S-Tier Sorcerer build.
Paladin (overall)
- Zealot Oath gains +25% damage.
Heaven's Fury has its cooldown reduced by 50% (15 seconds), radically changing the usage cadence.- Shield Charge doubles its damage.
- Seal of the Second Trumpet: Judgement rises to 100-150%.
- Oaths reaches 60-80%, Wing Strikes 200%, Aegis adds +30% armor.
- Shield of Retribution remains solid in leveling and gains ground in endgame.
Warlock (overall)
- Legion Shard: explosion damage at 150%.
- Apocalypse gains +25%.
- Numerous aspects revised to 20-second duration, improving rotation fluidity.
- Ae'grom's Schism, Gauntlets of Sheol, and Bridle of Tor'Baalos (class uniques) are heavily buffed, finally making the Warlock's BiS genuinely appealing.
Moderate BUFF
Whirlwind (Barbarian)
- Wrath of the Berserker gains +30% to all damage, a global multiplier that directly benefits Whirlwind builds that rely on this skill.
- Bloodletter's Flow 5-piece is restructured but remains viable.
Blood Wave (Necromancer)
- Bone Graft increases from 40% to 60% bonus.
- Aspect of Serration: the critical hit bonus rises from 5% to 10%.
Corpse Explosion variants are buffed, strengthening the build's synergies.
Evade Counterswarm (Spiritborn)
- Razor Wings: 15% refund and 40% cooldown reduction, considerably smoothing out the gameplay loop.
- Rushing Claw is reworked to consume Ferocity, a mechanic that integrates more naturally into the Evade rotation.
Twisting Blades /
Flurry (Rogue)
- Flurry receives a +196% buff, a massive increase that repositions this skill.
- Twisting Blades is significantly buffed, making it the dominant choice for Rogue leveling.
- Way of the Blurring Blade 5-piece reaches 250%.
Mixed (BUFF + NERF)
Ice Shards (Sorcerer)
- Icefall is restructured, opening up new synergies.
- However, Signet of Pelghain drops from 15-20% to 10-15% per second and now only affects Cold on enemies that are already Frozen, a flexibility nerf that directly impacts Ice Shards builds that used this ring for state transitions.
- Overall: the build remains viable but requires adaptation.
Chain Lightning (Sorcerer)
- Mana cost is reduced, but damage now scales progressively across bounces, a rework that changes the gameplay rather than simply buffing or nerfing it.
- Unstable Currents sees its scaling reduced, penalizing builds that relied on this skill to multiply effects.
- Chain Lightning remains S-Tier endgame, but the power ceiling is slightly lowered.
Charged Bolts (Sorcerer)
- Fundamental Release rises to 30% / 90%, a direct buff for builds that regularly trigger the condition.
- However, with Unstable Currents nerfed, interactions that amplified Charged Bolts through that skill lose efficiency.
- Overall: gain on the primary skill, loss on synergies.
Minion Barb (Barbarian)
- Call of the Ancients Highlander is fixed and attack speed is revised, a correction that can read as either a buff or a nerf depending on the configuration used.
- Fury generation is capped at 0.5/1% of maximum life, limiting infinite generation loops.
- Berserker's Crucible 5-piece: the bonus against elites drops from 30% to 10%, a notable set nerf for builds targeting Legendaries in groups.
NERF
Companion / Landslide (Druid)
- Shepherd's Aspect receives a heavy, unquantified reduction in the patch notes, a significant downward revision to animal companion damage.
- The Companion Druid build, which held an A-Tier endgame spot, falls back. Landslide remains a viable option but must be reevaluated without the companion crutch.
Dance of Knives (Rogue)
- Dance of Knives is reduced to 52%, a direct nerf that knocks this build back from its dominant leveling position.
- The build remains playable but loses its competitive edge against Twisting Blades and Flurry, both of which are up this patch.
Summoning builds (Necromancer / Barbarian)
- Hellbent Commander Aspect drops to 40-60%, a nerf that directly hits all builds relying on looping summons.
- The Minion Necromancer build stays A-Tier but the army's power ceiling is trimmed.
Notable global changes
Mythic Unique 3.0 Overhaul: Mythic Uniques now come with two guaranteed affixes instead of one, their values are always at the maximum possible roll, and they can now be modified via the Enchanting system. This is a major structural change that removes the lottery aspect of Mythics and makes them far more rewarding to farm. The time needed to obtain a usable Mythic is drastically cut.
War Plans: shared synchronized boards: Players in the same group now share progression on War Plans boards. This is a massive buff to cooperative play, which was previously penalized by desynchronized progression.
Currency caps massively increased: The caps on the various in-game currencies have been raised significantly. In practice, active players will no longer be blocked by stock limits in mid and late season, and player-to-player trades become smoother.
More frequent and more rewarding Ruptures: The Rupture system is revised to trigger more often and produce more impactful effects. The Barbarian, which naturally synergizes with Ruptures through Bloodletter's Flow and its life mechanic, benefits especially, but all classes gain from the change.
Generic BiS Unique nerf:
The Grandfather has its critical hit bonus reduced.
Harlequin Crest loses its damage reduction. These are two of the most-worn uniques in endgame across all classes; nerfing them pushes players toward class-specific uniques, an intentional design change that diversifies the gear meta.
Horadric Cube: rerolling Uniques: The Cube now allows certain affixes on Uniques to be rerolled. Combined with the Mythic 3.0 overhaul, Season 14 marks a genuine evolution in the philosophy of high-end gear crafting.
Analysis based on the Maxroll endgame tier list.
Which builds to play in Season 14?
These recommendations are ranked by post-patch potential. For leveling, we focus on clear speed and ease of use from the very start of the season. For endgame, we assess scaling potential on the hardest content. The classes at the top of the list are those that benefited the most from patch 3.1.0.
Leveling: 2 builds per class
1. Paladin
Shield of Retribution (BUFF)
The most accessible build of the season for the Paladin.
Heaven's Fury with a 50% reduced cooldown (15 seconds), Aegis granting +30% armor, and Zealot Oath up by +25% make this build a solid leveling machine. The Paladin's natural resistances offset the damage taken while leveling.
Blessed Hammer (BUFF)
Slightly more technical than Shield of Retribution, but highly effective thanks to synergies with Oaths (60-80%) and Wing Strikes (200%). The Paladin benefits from all of the patch buffs during leveling, making both options competitive. Blessed Hammer is ideal for players who prefer an offensive ranged playstyle.
2. Sorcerer
Blizzard (Neutral)
Blizzard remains a reliable pick for Sorcerer leveling. It is not directly affected by patch changes, meaning it retains its usual effectiveness. Progression is steady, survivability is solid thanks to slows, and it requires no specific gear to function from the start of the season.
Charged Bolts (Mixed)
Fundamental Release increases to 30% / 90%, directly boosting Charged Bolts during leveling when the condition is triggered consistently. The Unstable Currents nerf impacts endgame more than leveling, so leveling with this build remains smooth. A great choice to set up a transition into the
Ball Lightning build for endgame.
3. Warlock
Minion (BUFF)
The Warlock's class uniques (Ae'grom's Schism, Gauntlets of Sheol, Bridle of Tor'Baalos) are heavily buffed this patch, and Apocalypse gains +25%. During leveling, the Minion build takes advantage of summons tanking damage while you push forward. One of the best picks for players new to the class.
Dread Claws (BUFF)
Legion Shard at 150% explosion damage and the numerous aspects revised to 20 seconds give the Dread Claws build a more consistent gameplay rhythm. Slightly more mobile than Minion, with higher damage spikes on enemy packs. Season 14 is clearly the Warlock's season.
4. Spiritborn
Crushing Hand (Neutral)
Crushing Hand remains an effective leveling option largely unaffected by the patch. The Ferocity stack mechanic integrated into the rotation after the Rushing Claw rework can slightly complicate leveling, but Crushing Hand stays independent from those changes. A solid entry point for the class.
Evade (moderate BUFF)
Razor Wings with a 15% refund and a 40% reduced cooldown makes the Evade build much smoother during leveling. The gameplay loop built around chained dodges becomes less punishing when resources return faster. The loss of Unstoppable on Armored Hide is something to watch on content where survivability matters.
5. Barbarian
Frenzy Throw (Neutral)
Frenzy Throw is largely unaffected by the patch but remains one of the best Barbarian leveling builds thanks to its movement speed and area damage. The changes to Wrath of the Berserker (+30%) benefit all Barbarian builds, giving Frenzy Throw a small indirect boost.
Whirlwind (moderate BUFF)
Wrath of the Berserker at +30% global damage directly benefits Whirlwind, which relies on this skill for its burst phases. Slower to get started than Frenzy Throw, but the power ceiling is higher, setting up a strong endgame transition. More frequent and rewarding Ruptures this patch are an added bonus. View the Barbarian Whirlwind (Tourbillon) Season 14 guide
6. Rogue
Twisting Blades (BUFF)
Twisting Blades receives a significant buff this patch, making it the top leveling pick for the Rogue this season. The skill is already recognized as one of the most efficient for leveling, and the 3.1.0 buffs make it even better. Clearly the priority over
Dance of Knives, which drops to 52% and loses its comparative advantage.
Barrage (Neutral)
Barrage stays stable and reliable for leveling. Not directly affected by the patch, it offers a ranged alternative for players who prefer to avoid the melee playstyle of Twisting Blades. Dance of Knives, on the other hand, should be avoided at the start of the season: reduced to 52%, it loses the rank that made it the dominant leveling build in previous seasons.
7. Necromancer
Minion (Mixed)
Minion Necromancer remains a solid leveling option despite the Hellbent Commander Aspect nerf (40-60%). The army of the dead still gets the job done during leveling, even if the power ceiling is slightly lower. Bone Graft at 60% and the improved Aspect of Serration partially compensate.
Blood Surge (Neutral)
Blood Surge is barely touched by the patch but remains a comfortable leveling build thanks to its built-in self-healing. For players looking to transition into
Blood Wave for endgame, this is the most natural path, as the core synergies overlap.
8. Druid
Lightning Storm (Neutral)
Lightning Storm is the most stable Druid leveling option this patch. Unaffected by the Shepherd's Aspect nerf that targets Companion builds, it retains its usual effectiveness. Progression is steady and the skill is forgiving for less experienced players with the class.
Pulverize (Neutral)
Pulverize is in the same situation as Lightning Storm: stable and unaffected by patch changes. Scythe Talons increases from 5% to 10% critical chance, a minor buff that benefits all Druid builds using this gloves option. Note that Companion builds (Companion Druid with the heavily nerfed Shepherd's Aspect) should be avoided for leveling this season.
Endgame: 1 build per class
1. Paladin — Shield of Retribution (major BUFF)
The Paladin is the breakout class of Season 14. Shield of Retribution benefits from the full buff package: Heaven's Fury with a 50% reduced cooldown, Shield Charge doubling its damage, Seal of the Second Trumpet Judgement at 100-150%, and Aegis adding +30% armor. Such a concentration of buffs in a single patch window is rare. The build is projected to land squarely in S-Tier territory post-patch.
2. Sorcerer — Ball Lightning (major BUFF)
Ball Lightning receives the most structurally impactful buff of the patch: projectile size now scales with skill ranks, permanently increasing area coverage. Cain's Wild Lightning at +750% and Fundamental Release at 30% / 90% round out the picture. Ball Lightning was already S-Tier in endgame, and it now cements itself as the dominant Sorcerer build of the season.
3. Warlock — Apocalypse (major BUFF)
Apocalypse gains +25% and the class uniques are massively buffed (Ae'grom's Schism, Gauntlets of Sheol, Bridle of Tor'Baalos). Season 14 gives the Warlock the BiS tools it was missing to compete with established classes in endgame. Legion Shard at 150% explosion damage and the aspects revised to 20 seconds enable more consistent rotations on hard content.
4. Spiritborn — Evade Counterswarm (moderate BUFF)
Evade Counterswarm remains S-Tier in endgame and benefits from the fluidity gained on Razor Wings (15% refund, cooldown -40%) and the Rushing Claw rework. The loss of Unstoppable on Armored Hide is a real defensive nerf that will need to be offset through gear, but the Evade build does not primarily rely on that skill for survivability.
5. Barbarian — Whirlwind (moderate BUFF)
Whirlwind benefits from Wrath of the Berserker at +30% global damage and from more frequent, rewarding Ruptures this patch. The build remains S-Tier in endgame. Berserker's Crucible 5-piece is nerfed (30% down to 10% on elites), which may affect specific set configurations, but the core Whirlwind build does not depend on it directly. Minion Barb (Call of the Ancients) is a mixed alternative depending on your interpretation of the Highlander fix. View the Barbarian Whirlwind (Tourbillon) Season 14 guide
6. Rogue — Twisting Blades (BUFF)
Twisting Blades receives a significant buff this patch and becomes the top endgame pick for the Rogue. Dance of Knives at 52% falls back and is no longer recommended as a primary endgame option this season. Penetrating Shot remains a viable alternative for players who prefer the ranged playstyle. Way of the Blurring Blade 5-piece at 250% complements Twisting Blades scaling well on advanced content.
7. Necromancer — Blood Wave (moderate BUFF)
Blood Wave is the best endgame pick for the Necromancer this patch. Bone Graft at 60%, Aspect of Serration with doubled critical chance (5% to 10%), and the buffed
Corpse Explosion variants strengthen the damage loop. The Minion build remains viable, but Hellbent Commander Aspect at 40-60% limits army potential in competitive endgame. Blood Wave does not depend on that mechanic.
8. Druid — Landslide (Neutral / indirect NERF)
The Shepherd's Aspect nerf hits Druid Companion builds hard, what was previously considered a solid A-Tier endgame option. Landslide does not rely on animal companions for its primary damage and remains the best available endgame option for the class. Scythe Talons at 10% critical chance and Archdruid's Aspect at 45-60% provide small gains. The Druid remains the class that benefits least from this patch.
