Build Overview

Here is an advanced version of the Crit Shield WallShield Wall build on the Infernalist ascendancy, in its « Day 6 » iteration by FunkehChicken. The core concept is simple on paper but devastating in practice: turn Shield WallShield Wall into an ultra-fast attack machine while stacking an absurd amount of Armour. On a mid-to-high budget, the attack time of Shield WallShield Wall already drops to around 0.6 seconds — more than twice the base speed — for a Mapping comfort that becomes genuinely exhilarating.

The heart of the build rests on three pillars that reinforce one another. First, the Infernalist doubles its critical damage bonus thanks to Grinning Emulation and keystone Pain Attunementkeystone Pain Attunement, and guarantees critical hits via NebulochNebuloch as long as an endurance charge is consumed. Next, a colossal Armour (nearly 90,000 buffed Armour, and over 120,000 Armour applied to fire) turns the notable Pyromantic Pactnotable Pyromantic Pact mechanic into virtually unlimited mana. Finally, a massive investment in skill speed accelerates both attacks and war cries, keeping the entire rotation spinning at a frantic pace.

The result is a character that is both highly offensive and extremely resilient, played in low life without suffering the usual drawbacks. There is also significant room for improvement: the creator himself does not yet have all of his chase gear, suggesting even stronger performance once the build is fully optimized.

Strengths / Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Exceptional Mapping speed: an attack time around 0.6s makes clearing maps incredibly smooth.
  • Nearly unlimited mana: notable Pyromantic Pactnotable Pyromantic Pact replaces mana with a resource that never causes issues, freeing up an equipment suffix.
  • Massive tankiness: nearly 90,000 buffed Armour, with huge fire damage mitigation.
  • Ultra-fast war cry: thanks to skill speed, the war cry triggers almost instantly.
  • Guaranteed crits: NebulochNebuloch ensures reliable critical hits without needing to stack critical chance.
  • Strong upgrade potential: the build already performs very well without its full chase gear.

❌ Weaknesses

  • notable Pyromantic Pact risky early on: without sufficient Armour (and especially fire-applied Armour), self-damage can be dangerous.
  • Complex build: rage generation, the war cry tech, and endurance charge management require a solid understanding of the synergies.
  • Costly min-maxing: certain key items (controlled radius jewels, NebulochNebuloch with three sockets) fetch high prices.
  • Dependency on multiple uniques: NebulochNebuloch, The Brass DomeThe Brass Dome, and Coward’s Legacy are all essential to the build’s functioning.

Recommended Equipment

  • Weapon : NebulochNebuloch, the unique mace that guarantees critical hits as long as an endurance charge is consumed. Prioritize a version with at least two sockets to place skill speed runes (a three-socket version remains the ideal but costly goal).
  • Body armour : The Brass DomeThe Brass Dome, the unique body armour with massive Armour values. Its very high Armour increase percentage multiplies the value of local runes (a +30 Armour rune becomes the equivalent of roughly 180 base Armour).
  • Belt : Coward’s Legacy, the unique that grants Low Life status, unlocking the Infernalist’s critical hit synergies.
  • Helmet / boots / gloves : aim for a rune of armour applies to fire (around 40%) to maximize mitigation and feed notable Pyromantic Pactnotable Pyromantic Pact. On gloves, attack speed is an excellent addition once resistances are sorted.
  • Jewels : a medium-radius Controlled MetamorphosisControlled Metamorphosis provides a 60% critical damage bonus, while a Lab Anguish grants a permanent flask effect that unlocks elixirs (16% attack speed).
  • Speed jewel : Heart of the WellHeart of the Well, which can roll up to 8% skill speed (and ideally an additional damage bonus).
  • Chase upgrade : Garukhan’s remains one of the major missing pieces to push the build even further.

Gameplay Tips

  • Test notable Pyromantic Pact based on your Armour : on a well-armoured setup, the self-damage is negligible. On a tighter budget or without armour applies to fire, first verify you can comfortably tank the tick before committing — reallocating the points only costs gold.
  • Prioritize skill speed : it provides a double benefit by accelerating both Shield WallShield Wall and the rate of your war cries, making it the most sought-after stat in the build.
  • Maintain your endurance charges : while Mapping, Armour Break IIIArmour Break III automatically regenerates them whenever you fully break the Armour of dense packs. Before a boss, build them up in bear form via the passive that grants one charge per 15 rage spent.
  • Keep your rage capped : the Ferocious RoarFerocious Roar + Enraged War Cry loop spends 15 rage to bypass the war cry cooldown, triggering both endurance charges and buffs simultaneously.
  • Top-end Medved option : this support gem grants roughly one attack speed point per rage, at the cost of a slight life loss on cast. Reserved for very defensive characters — try it out, it costs almost nothing.

Pyromantic Pact and « infinite » mana

notable Pyromantic Pactnotable Pyromantic Pact is the cornerstone of this build’s comfort. This ascendancy passive replaces your mana with a new resource, Infernal Flame, whose pool is twice your base mana. You therefore immediately gain a considerable buffer, and above all you never need mana leech again — freeing up a valuable suffix on a ring or on your gloves.

The only theoretical downside is the self-damage inflicted when the Infernal Flame gauge fills completely. On this build, however, that downside is almost entirely negated: thanks to the enormous amount of armour applies to fire (over 120,000, and even more with Scavenged PlatingScavenged Plating), the hit taken represents only a tiny fraction of your life. This Armour + Infernal Flame synergy is precisely what makes the mechanic so comfortable. Be cautious, however: if your Armour (especially armour applies to fire) is still low, test it carefully before committing.

Maximizing skill speed

Skill speed is the engine of this update. Its appeal comes from its double effect: it accelerates not only your attacks but also the speed of your war cries, making the rotation extremely responsive. The creator can even fire his war cry faster than he generates the rage needed to trigger it.

Multiple sources stack together: two skill speed runes in a two-socket NebulochNebuloch (16%), a Heart of the Well that can contribute an additional 8%, plus a rune in a three-socket body armour to specifically boost the war cry. On the passive tree, the creator has moved away from certain defensive nodes and conditional attack sources in favour of unconditional clusters offering attack speed, skill speed, and movement speed, including one particularly efficient cluster combining skill speed and movement speed.

How the build works: crit, low life and endurance charges

The Infernalist doubles its critical damage bonus by combining Grinning Emulation and keystone Pain Attunementkeystone Pain Attunement. To activate this low life status, you reserve 25% of life through an ascendancy reservation, then pair that with Coward’s Legacy which grants the actual low life state.

Once this double critical bonus is in place, NebulochNebuloch guarantees critical hits as long as you consume an endurance charge. The question then becomes: how do you maintain these charges? In Mapping, Armour Break IIIArmour Break III regenerates them whenever you fully break an enemy’s Armour — and in dense maps, you hit hard enough to break the Armour of almost everything. For the initial ramp-up (before a boss or at the start of a map), the bear form passive grants an endurance charge whenever you spend 15 rage.

The rage generation loop

The core tech of the build consists of generating and spending rage in a cyclical fashion. Rage is spent through Ferocious RoarFerocious Roar paired with Enraged War Cry, which consumes 15 rage to bypass the war cry’s cooldown — which in turn triggers the bear form passive and grants an endurance charge.

To fuel this loop, several pieces are needed: Ferocious RoarFerocious Roar paired with a talisman, Raging CryRaging Cry to generate rage, and a key node on the weapon set (Roaring Cries) that increases the power of war cries and therefore the rage generated. Since we use Infernal CryInfernal Cry rather than the base version of Ferocious RoarFerocious Roar, we recover the missing rage through Eternal RageEternal Rage, which keeps the gauge at its cap.

Nightfall: a disappointing alternative to Shield Wall

The author tested Nightfall as a potential replacement for Shield WallShield Wall, but the verdict is clear: roughly a quarter of the damage and clear speed, with a 4-second cooldown and a two-button playstyle. The delay between casting and the shield landing makes the skill very unwieldy.

Some players will no doubt manage to make it work, but given the constraints, Shield WallShield Wall remains by far the most comfortable option. These items are cheap right now, so nothing is stopping you from testing it yourself — but don’t be surprised if you quickly come back to Shield WallShield Wall.
