Build Overview
Mekuna’s Bloodmage
Spark Cast on Crit is a lightning-fast mapping build designed for the Witch using the Blood Mage ascendancy. The concept is as simple as it is devastating: cast
Spark with the
Pinpoint Critical support to reach 100% critical hit chance, which cascades into
Lightning Bolt (via the unique amulet Choir of the Storm) and
Arc (via
Cast on Critical). The result is a near-continuous rain of lightning that clears packs well beyond the screen, while maintaining single-target damage more than sufficient for the majority of endgame content.
Where this build truly shines is in its power-to-budget ratio. Mekuna built it for around 5 divines and estimates it now costs about ten to get started. No « chase » item is required at the start: it’s an excellent transition point to leave a sluggish starter behind (such as a plant/
Contagion build) and rediscover the joy of a fast lightning caster. In his own words, both the clear speed and single target are noticeably better, and there is still plenty of room to scale further.
The Blood Mage ascendancy is the true cornerstone of the Cast on Crit archetype. It converts the mana cost of spells into a life cost, but in return grants generous life leech and above all a very high base critical strike rate — exactly what a CoC build needs to function. Life sustain relies on
Life Remnants generated on enemy death, amplified by
Khatals Rejuvenation, which can even temporarily push you above your maximum life in the heat of combat.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Excellent clear speed: the rain of
Lightning Bolt and
Arc kills off-screen packs effortlessly. - Very affordable entry budget: up and running for ~5 divine, no mandatory chase item.
- Solid single target: clearly outperforms a starter plant/Contagion build.
- 100% guaranteed critical hit on
Spark thanks to
Pinpoint Critical and the Blood Mage’s high base crit. - Enormous room for progression: gear,
Rakiatas Flow and jewels allow scaling very far. - Mapping comfort: capable of chaining T15+ maps even when heavily juiced.
❌ Weaknesses
- Punishing Blood Mage mechanic: casting spells with no enemies nearby drains your life.
- Defensively fragile: as an Energy Shield caster, it requires capping resistances and staying cautious on heavily juiced maps.
- Tricky mana regeneration early on: requires
Arcane Surge and
notable Efficient Casting to feel comfortable. - Multiple layers of effects (
Spark → crit →
Lightning Bolt +
Arc): less readable than a mono-skill build.

This build is intentionally « budget »: most pieces are accessible rares. The interactive equipment grid below details the exact setup; here are the slot-by-slot priorities according to Mekuna.
- Amulet (core piece) : Choir of the Storm (unique) — this is what makes the build work: it triggers a Lightning Bolt on every critical hit. Aim for a high Lightning Bolt level (+19 minimum, +22 ideal). Expect around 1 exalt to get started.
- Main staff : a staff (Chiming Staff type) with +levels to lightning spells (+6/+7), added lightning damage, cast speed and critical chance. Budget around ~2-3 divines, or craftable yourself.
- Secondary staff (weapon set) : carries
Sigil of Power for the damage boost, complemented by cast speed and increased rarity of items found. - Body Armour : as much Energy Shield as possible, ideally with 2 to 3 elemental resistances to help cap.
- Helmet : Energy Shield, increased rarity of items found, and critical hit chance for more damage.
- Gloves : critical damage bonus, Energy Shield, and a « magnitude of non-damage elemental ailments » mod (Shock then reaches 20% more damage).
- Boots : movement speed (priority early on), Energy Shield and resistances.
- Belt : life and resistances to complete the cap.
- Rings : cast speed (note, this is NOT attack speed in PoE 2), increased rarity of items found, lightning damage and resistances as needed.
- Jewels : small 4-mod jewels are a huge damage gain — aim for critical chance, critical damage, elemental/spell damage and especially « 50% more damage for triggered spells » (
Lightning Bolt and
Arc both benefit). ~1 divine per piece. - Chase item : Rakiata’s Flow, which can literally triple your damage if you’re lucky enough to find it.
Overall defensive goal: 75% to all elemental resistances and as much Energy Shield as possible (aim for ~10k eventually).
Gameplay Tips
- Always cast Spark on enemies : as Blood Mage, casting into the void costs you life with no life leech in return. As soon as there are monsters, you recover instantly.
- Cap your resistances first : 75% to all elements before thinking about damage. That is what keeps you alive on juicy maps.
- Stack Energy Shield : as a ranged caster, ES is your primary survival layer — forget armour and evasion.
- Sort out your mana early : take
notable Efficient Casting and
Arcane Surge on the tree to solve regeneration issues and gain cast speed + regen. - Pace yourself : on very juicy maps, slow down and cast more rather than rushing forward — the build can take hits, but does not forgive recklessness.
- Frost Bomb is optional : useful for
Cold Infusion and Elemental Exposure (more damage), but not mandatory if you prefer to keep things simple.
How Cast on Crit Works
The core of the build relies on a critical hit loop. You cast
Spark, which becomes your main trigger: thanks to the
Pinpoint Critical support,
Spark reaches 100% critical hit chance. Each critical hit then triggers two chain effects. First, the unique amulet Choir of the Storm unleashes a
Lightning Bolt (at level 19, or even 22, depending on the amulet). Then, the
Cast on Critical support automatically casts
Arc.
In practice,
Spark is not meant to deal direct damage — it does a little, but it is primarily an engine. The real power comes from stacking
Lightning Bolt and
Arc with each critical hit. The idea is therefore to cast
Spark as fast as possible, with fast piercing projectiles, to maximize the number of critical hits and therefore procs.
Cast on Critical is particularly strong in mapping and for clearing packs.
The Blood Mage Ascendancy in Detail
Blood Mage is a « peculiar » ascendancy: your spells consume life instead of mana. You therefore need to be careful to cast when monsters are present, as you benefit from life leech that more than compensates the cost. Casting spells in a vacuum, on the other hand, will drain you fast.
In return, Blood Mage offers a massive critical hit chance bonus — the very foundation of a Cast on Crit build — as well as maximum life and toughness. This is precisely what makes it one of the best classes for CoC: reaching a very high critical rate is almost trivial. Added to this is the
Life Remnants system: by killing enemies, you generate remnants to pick up that heal you. With
Khatals Rejuvenation, these remnants become even more numerous and can make your life overflow past your maximum life, sometimes reaching 2,000 or 3,000 life points mid-combat.
Progression and Optimization Paths
The setup shown is deliberately « early » and budget: there is plenty of room to scale. The first improvements come through gear — a better staff with higher levels to lightning spells and added damage, then jewels with 4 well-rolled mods. Added (flat) damage and the « triggered spells » mod are particularly valuable in PoE 2, as this type of bonus is rare and every point counts enormously.
The ultimate chase goal is Rakiata’s Flow, capable of tripling your damage. Further down the line, Mekuna is considering swapping
Spark in favor of
Comet or Skyfall to push single target even further. On the defensive side, aim for around 10k Energy Shield and, ideally, cap chaos resistance once everything else is secured.
Endgame Farming: Atlas and Abysses
The priority once in endgame is to complete the Atlas tree. To do so, you need to defeat the new pinnacle boss roughly five times: each kill unlocks Atlas points (around 40 in total), which makes your maps juicier and greatly increases your chances to farm divines.
Once the Atlas tree is complete, you are free to choose whichever farming activity suits you. Mekuna particularly recommends Abysses, which are very profitable for divines. The build being both fast in clear and comfortable, it adapts well to most mapping content in the league.
