Build Overview
This Rogue Poison Pen Shot build proposed by @wudijo for Season 14 revolves around poison-imbued
Penetrating Shot, with two very distinct ways to play it depending on the content you're facing. After clearing Torment 12 Hardcore Solo Self-Found with this setup, the author made it his main build for the start of the season and plans to keep optimizing it over the coming days. He notes that another guide exists for the same skill with a slightly different approach, but the choice between the two mostly comes down to personal preference.
The core of this rogue poison pen shot build relies on two interchangeable upgrades for
Penetrating Shot:
Ballista, slower but capable of dealing massive single-target damage (up to 3000% weapon damage on a single shot), and
Shadow Shot, which summons extra clones and literally turns the screen into a rain of arrows for spectacular AoE clear. The author explains he can swap between the two variants mid-fight without touching the rest of the setup, letting him double his single-target damage as soon as a tough boss shows up, then switch back to
Shadow Shot right after.
Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- One of the strongest rogue poison pen shot builds of Season 14, already cleared in Torment 12 Hardcore Solo Self-Found
- Two interchangeable
Penetrating Shot upgrades on the fly (
Ballista for single-target,
Shadow Shot for AoE) without changing the rest of the setup - Spectacular, very readable AoE clear thanks to the multiple clones from
Eaglehorn - Several resource management solutions depending on gear level (dedicated charm or rune/upgrade combo)
- A comfortable leveling phase thanks to the
Dance of Knives /
Penetrating Shot combo before getting the major pieces
❌ Weaknesses
- No generator on the bar: resource management stays tight until
Tibault's Will (or its alternative) is in place - Significant mythic investment required (
Eaglehorn,
Harlequin Crest) to unlock the build's full potential
Tibault's Will isn't a direct boss drop: it requires upgrading and converting a pair of pants through the Horadric Cube
Shadow Shot loses a lot of single-target damage against bosses, forcing regular swaps back to
Ballista
Recommended Gear
Loot Table
The centerpiece of this rogue poison pen shot build is
Eaglehorn, obtained from the Varshan boss. You can technically play
Penetrating Shot without it, but this bow is what turns the skill into a genuine curtain of bouncing arrows and justifies the whole build's investment. On the helm,
Harlequin Crest replaces an old
Heir of Perdition: it loses a bit of raw power but largely makes up for it with its skill ranks, which double-dip for this build since they boost both
Puncture and
Poison Imbuement. The
Aspect of Disobedience on that same helm also makes the setup particularly sturdy defensively, to the point of having plenty of survivability to spare.
On the
Pants, Shrouded Gift is favored to free up the charm slot for
Tibault's Will, a charm that doesn't drop directly from a boss but is obtained by upgrading a pair of pants to unique via the Horadric Cube before converting it. On the gloves,
Aspect of Imitated Imbuement is essential: without it, the clones summoned by the build won't fire poisoned arrows. The chest benefits from Aspect of Debilitating Toxins, useful defensively since almost the entire screen ends up poisoned, while the boots carry
Aspect of Accursed Touch to keep Vulnerable up continuously (the
Exploit Paragon glyph can fill a similar role depending on whether you favor fast farming or longer fights). On the rings, Aspect of Malice and Aspect of Alchemical Advantage respectively provide generic damage and an attack speed/critical strike bonus that makes any further attack speed investment unnecessary.
For stats, priority clearly goes to damage-over-time multiplier and damage-to-vulnerable multiplier on absolutely every slot where they're available (amulet, rings, weapons, gloves). The rest of the defensive slots (
Pants, boots, chest) take the classic life/armor/resistance trio, movement speed being secondary since the Rogue reaches its cap very easily. On tempers, a mix of damage-over-time and imbuement potency works well, while still keeping a majority of damage-over-time since imbuement potency doesn't apply to shadow clone damage, which makes up a large chunk of the build's total damage.
Horadric Seal S14
This build's Horadric Seal relies on the five charms of the Sightless set, rounded out by
Tibault's Will in the sixth slot. The grid below details every slot and its secondary charms.
Gameplay Tips
This build has no generator on its skill bar and relies entirely on Preparation to function: you need to trigger it as often as possible to keep resetting
Shadow Clone's cooldown. The author also benefits from stealth synergies that keep a near-permanent clone lurking in ambush, on top of the one actively summoned with each
Shadow Clone cast: several silhouettes end up firing at once, not counting the extra clones generated by
Shadow Shot itself.
The real crux of the build is resource management, since this version burns through energy fast. The author's preferred solution is the
Tibault's Will charm, which regenerates up to 50 energy per second once
Unstoppable is triggered, letting you fire almost without interruption. A perfectly viable alternative, especially before getting that charm, is to run the defensive version of
Dark Shroud with its
Overflow upgrade: each stack of
Dark Shroud boosts energy regeneration, and by keeping five stacks up (maintained via the
Neo and
Mot runes, combined with the barrier granted by the
Qua rune), you can comfortably exceed 20 energy per second versus a baseline of 8 — a figure you can push even further with a simple energy regeneration roll on the boots. With
Ballista, being slower, this resource problem is much less of an issue anyway.
For recurring boss fights like Mephisto, the author keeps a dedicated backup weapon,
Rustbitten Dirk, which deals significant bonus damage against bosses: just make sure not to imprint the build's mandatory aspect (the one that grants imbuement to the clones) on it so you can swap it in on the fly for the fight. Among the other notable pieces, the Ednas item double-dips by boosting both imbuement potency and offering a damage multiplier, provided you can trigger a second elemental proc (cold, fire, lightning, or holy) via a dedicated charm or weapon. The author also mentions wanting to add a mythic Eldritch ring, which he hasn't gotten this season yet: once equipped and after killing an elite, it grants infinite
Dash and
Shadow Step to zip across the map.
For leveling up, the author recommends first playing
Dance of Knives with its
Fan of Knives upgrade (which throws five daggers at once) alongside
Penetrating Shot: the first skill handles single-target thanks to its good critical hit rate that restores resources, while the second handles AoE clear on packs. This combo lets you comfortably push through the Torment tiers until you get
Eaglehorn, the tipping point toward playing
Penetrating Shot full-time.
Talent Tree
Mercenary S14
The main mercenary hired for this build is Raheir, chosen for his toughness and crowd control:
Ground Slam slows enemies at range while
Bastion lets him absorb 90% of the damage aimed at nearby allies for 5 seconds. His
Inspiration and
Raheir's Aegis passives round things out: the first boosts damage dealt to targets hit by his
Ground Slam, the second grants 15% resistance to all elements.
As backup, Varyana brings her
Earth Breaker as situational support, a complementary ability that reinforces the toughness Raheir provides without requiring any active management from the player.
Paragon
For Paragon, the author points directly to the full planner, which details all the boards and their multiple power-progression steps throughout leveling. He notes he carried over last season's board almost as-is, with the main change being the addition of
Harlequin Crest in place of his old
Heir of Perdition. As with the rest of the gear, priority stays on life and damage-over-time, with no particular need for cooldown reduction beyond a possible secondary roll to smooth out rotations.
