New Server June 29: Ragnarok X the MMORPG Worth Trying

Article by Kami

Over the past few weeks, I found myself watching hours of War of the Chosen tournament matches, the Season 1 competitive PvP event for Ragnarok X: Next Generation. Five-player teams, nail-biting finals, last-second comebacks, and a few memorable blowouts. It reminded me why this game is so addictive. This article and its accompanying video were created in partnership with the Ragnarok X Global team. This is my second collaboration with them, and I’d rather say so upfront.

Ragnarok X launched in January 2026 and has already surpassed 25 million players. Yet from talking to people around me, I realized many still haven’t taken the plunge. Some were on the fence, others had tried it without really knowing where to start. That’s exactly what I want to address here: a full overview of the game, from basic progression all the way to competitive PvP, for those who haven’t made up their mind yet or want to find their footing.

And if you’re wondering whether now is the right time to jump in, good news: a new server opens on June 29th. In an MMO, that kind of opportunity is rare. Everyone starts from scratch, with no need to catch up on players who’ve been grinding for months. It’s the best entry point the game has to offer.

War of the Chosen: The Seasonal PvP Mode That Hooked Me

War of the Chosen, abbreviated WOC, is the game’s seasonal competitive PvP mode. The format: five players per team, with up to three substitutes for a roster of eight. Teams compete against other players on the same server. The objective goes beyond eliminations. Control pillars are placed across the map and award points to those who activate and hold them. Each team’s score is the sum of all participating members’ points, excluding forfeits. If both teams finish tied, the one that dealt the most total damage wins. Coordination outweighs individual aggression. Charging in without a plan gets punished fast.

The matches I watched showed two very different realities. At the top of the seasonal rankings, fights were tight. Positioning and communication between players clearly made the difference. Some matchups, though, were completely one-sided. Character progression level matters a lot in WOC. A team that’s behind on gear can get steamrolled, even with a solid composition on paper.

On the class side, the Hunter, the Archer’s subclass, frequently appeared in the team compositions I observed. Its burst damage and ranged output let it take down targets quickly, and most teams ran two of them. Even so, every class had a role to fill in the teams I watched. Ragnarok X doesn’t enforce a rigid meta where one class dominates everything, unlike some MMORPGs like World of Warcraft.

Some teams placed traps right in front of the enemy respawn point. The team in the dominant position could block their opponents’ return the moment they respawned on the map. A ruthless approach, but devastatingly effective at locking down an objective map once you have the upper hand.

WOC also features a match betting system using a dedicated currency: the Divine Emblem. Placing a few bets mid-match is all it takes to make you want to watch every second. At the end of the season, accumulated WOC tokens can be exchanged for exclusive rewards: cosmetics, costumes, and mounts.

What Is Ragnarok X: Next Generation?

Ragnarok X is an MMORPG developed by Gravity, released worldwide in January 2026. It already has 25 million players. For anyone following the MMORPG genre, that’s a remarkable launch for such a recent title.

The game runs on PC via Steam, as well as on Android and iOS. Progression is synced across all devices. You start a session on your computer, pick it back up on your phone during your commute, and everything is right where you left it.

Combat runs on a semi-automatic system. The game handles movement and basic attacks for you, which makes farming and quest tracking a lot smoother. For those who want to go deeper, full manual control is available: skills, combat positioning, build optimization.

On the economic side, no stat advantages can be purchased. ROX is firmly anti-pay-to-win. The interface is fully available in French, including the main quests, with a quality localization. That’s not something you often see among other recent MMORPGs.

Six Classes, Guilds and Group Content

Ragnarok X offers six iconic classes to shape your adventure: the Swordsman, the Mage, the Archer, the Acolyte, the Thief and the Merchant. Each class has its own identity and distinct mechanics, covering every playstyle.

ROX features a full guild system, group content, and plenty of large-scale activities. As you progress, PvP modes unlock: KVM, guild PvP, and War of the Chosen all let you test your skills against other players. These modes cater to both solo duel enthusiasts and players focused on team play.

Victory doesn’t come from gear alone. Team coordination, class composition and strategy execution matter just as much. Ragnarok X rewards collective preparation as much as individual power.

Getting Started Without Messing Up Your Character

Fear of misallocating stat points is one of the first barriers in any MMO. Reaching level 50 with a broken character and having to start all over is something nobody wants. In Ragnarok X, that scenario shouldn’t happen.

The game offers preset stat distributions with recommended skills, perfect for getting started without overthinking. Better yet, a full stat and skill reset system is available directly in-game. Made a build mistake? Fix it. Want to try a different direction? Change it. No strings attached.

ROX actively encourages experimentation. Trying out a different build costs nothing, and that’s what makes the early hours far less stressful than in other MMOs of the same genre.

Leveling Fast: Quests, Daily Missions and Odin’s Blessing

Progression in Ragnarok X follows a few simple rules. The first: follow the main quest. It’s the best source of experience early on. These quests gradually unlock all the game’s systems, provide equipment and guide you through the different zones. The classic mistake is trying to do everything at once. Stick to the main storyline and the other systems will open up naturally.

The second rule involves the mission board, accessible from towns. It offers up to 10 daily missions that provide a solid amount of experience and reputation. The board resets every day at 5 PM server time. Get into the habit of checking it every time you log in.

With those two habits in place, your progression will already be faster than most players. There’s a third lever, and this one works even when you’re away from your screen.

The third rule is Odin’s Blessing. This automatic farming system unlocks at level 23. Once active, your character keeps playing on its own while you go about other things. The bonus is substantial: x5 on experience, monsters, currency and items picked up. You get 300 minutes per day. Combine that with a recommended training zone to earn additional XP bonuses. It’s the combination that lets you progress even with limited playtime.

Making Your Character Truly Powerful

Leveling up is one thing. Making your character truly formidable is another. Three levers make the difference right from the start of your adventure.

The top priority: refining your weapon and armor. The principle is straightforward. You spend materials to boost equipment stats. Up to +4 or +5, progression is linear and risk-free. Beyond that, attempts can fail. It’s better to spread the risk rather than putting everything on a single fragile item.

The card system deserves quick attention. Cards slot into your equipment and can offer significant stat bonuses. Some drop for free by farming monsters available from the very start of the game. The classic trap: getting into it too late. A few weeks after launch, players who invested early will have noticeably stronger characters than those who waited.

Joining a guild around level 20 is the third habit worth building early. Guilds provide permanent stat bonuses unlocked through daily contributions. The earlier you get involved, the more those bonuses compound over time. An active guild also means having a group of players to tackle content with. In an MMO, that fundamentally changes the experience.

PvE: The Corsair’s Cabin Dungeon

Ragnarok X has dozens of dungeons to explore, and I got to test one during my session: the Corsair’s Cabin. Each dungeon can be played in a group or solo, provided you’re powerful enough to go in alone.

Inside, waves of monsters are waiting, as in any dungeon of this type. But it’s the final boss that holds all the real difficulty. Drake, waiting at the back of the Cabin, is far tougher than everything that comes before.

Drake isn’t just a dummy to beat on. Floor zones are marked and you must avoid them every time, no exceptions. Some mechanics are extremely punishing: ignoring them means instant death. Some of the boss’s abilities can one-shot you. In a group, every player has to hold their role: the tank absorbs hits, healers keep the team alive, and DPS focus on the boss. Everyone needs to play their part to clear the dungeon cleanly.

If you execute the mechanics correctly and fill your role, the rewards are well worth the effort. ROX is extremely generous with loot for players who master its dungeons.
