Discord messages on Google: a guild admin checklist

On November 16, 2026, every « discoverable » Discord server will get its own web page, and in mid-December the public Discord messages from its channels may start showing up in Google. The announcement dates from October 27, in a post on Discord’s official blog signed by product manager Kelsey Duncombe-Smith. If you run a guild or community server, you have about three weeks to decide what gets displayed.

Which servers are affected by public Discord messages

A « discoverable » server (Discoverable Server) is a server anyone can find and join without an invite link, through Discord’s Server Discovery. Discord sets three conditions: at least 1,000 members, at least eight weeks of existence, and compliance with activity and safety criteria. Direct messages, group chats and private servers are not affected.

Two dates matter. On November 16, every discoverable server gets a web page: if the moderation team hasn’t prepared one, Discord publishes a default page built from the server profile. Automatic channel summaries (Channel Summaries) may appear the same day. In mid-December, the gradual rollout of the messages themselves begins, on the pages and in web search. Only messages posted after that date are concerned, with no username or avatar shown.

A figure of 63,000 discoverable servers appears in TJ Denzer’s article for Shacknews, which attributes it to a Discord social media post. It is not in the blog post: take it as a reported order of magnitude. The same article notes that public servers are discoverable, and therefore indexable, by default.

Guild admin: the checklist before November 16

Settings are in Server Settings, under Web Presence. Discord has been rolling them out since October 27. By default, all public channels take part. The post doesn’t say which role or permission opens this section: check with your admin account.

  • Check whether your server is discoverable: at least 1,000 members, eight weeks old, listed in Discovery. If not, nothing changes for you.
  • Go through your public channels. A recruitment or Q&A channel can well appear on the web, a channel where people talk about raid schedules or loot disputes should not.
  • In Web Presence, remove the channels you don’t want online, or switch them all off.
  • Decide on channel summaries: you can choose their sources, curate them or turn them off. Members have no way to refuse them.
  • Reread the default web page of November 16 and edit it: the text comes from the server profile, so it might as well be polished.
  • Warn your members before mid-December. Discord says the channels where Discord messages may appear will carry a visible label.

To have no page at all, there is only one way: go back to being a regular Community server, that is, leave Discovery. Discord’s post puts it this way: « If you don’t want one, you can always switch back to being a Community Server ». You then lose the visibility Discovery gives.

French players: your Discord messages are protected by default, summaries are not

Every member has a switch in User Settings, Data & Privacy: « Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages ». It is a single switch for all your servers. Discord turns it off by default in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, as Felix Ng for Cointelegraph points out. Teens are excluded outright. A French player therefore has nothing to do to keep their messages out of Google.

Two limits apply. The setting only works going forward: a message already sent while the option was on stays visible until you delete it, and Cointelegraph warns that search engines may keep a cached copy. As for channel summaries, they retell the discussions without usernames, but your exchanges still feed them, and only admins can turn them off. If you talk in a public channel of a server with more than 1,000 members, discretion therefore depends on the team running it.

What a community gains by being found

Discord pushes the idea that a question already solved in a channel should lead a stranger to the community that has the answer. For a guild that recruits, that is a real lever: a clean web page with a live summary of what is being said beats an invite link dropped in a forum. The pilot servers (NBA 2K, Rust, Dead by Daylight) served as a test, with messages from admins and moderators. No traffic figure has been published so far.

The schedule is tight for the guilds of WoW Forever, whose launch is near and which already recruit on Discord. Open Web Presence before November 16, reread the list of your public channels, and tell your members what will be online.
