Mass Effect Universe trailer leaked: what is confirmed

A video of about two minutes, no interface, and a name on screen: “Mass Effect: Universe”. It appeared on Reddit on October 22, 2026, twenty-four hours after BioWare closed, and it shows the game the studio was building when EA pulled the plug. The press establishes one thing: the video is real. The rest, from the identity of whoever posted it to the final title, remains unproven. What Mass Effect Universe wanted to be can still be pieced together.

What the Mass Effect Universe video shows

According to 80 Level, the footage introduces a new protagonist in a Milky Way still rebuilding after the Reaper War, the conflict of Mass Effect 3. This time there is no galaxy-wide threat: the site describes an espionage story with infiltration, stolen intelligence and political intrigue. An older Liara T’Soni appears, which sets the story well after the trilogy, and Krogans (a warrior species) and Quarians show up in the images.

A.V. Club adds the detail of the scene: a human agent, a former soldier, tells an asari that he intends to be “putting out fires” in the galaxy before they start. The conversation turns into a brawl with gunfights and biotic powers (the series’ psychic abilities), apparently built from in-game assets.

A.V. Club, William Hughes, October 22, 2026: a trailer for an unannounced game, surfacing one day after BioWare’s closure.

What is confirmed: the video is authentic

The strongest point comes from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. PC Gamer (Andy Chalk, October 22) reports that he wrote on Bluesky that the video is real and that BioWare was working on this game until the closure. A.V. Club, citing The Verge, speaks of authenticity confirmed by several sources, Schreier included.

Moderators of the r/masseffect forum could not authenticate the video. According to 80 Level they find it credible and free of visible generative-AI traces, and PC Gamer sees no such flaw either. Those two opinions are impressions, not proof: Schreier’s confirmation is what counts.

PC Gamer, Andy Chalk, October 22, 2026: the video was posted a few hours after the message of a purported EA employee.

What is not: the leaker, the title, the voice

The account that uploaded the video is brand new, and 80 Level states that no public evidence establishes its identity or work history. The site describes it as an alleged former employee, without verification. The video appeared under the post of another user, who claimed to be an EA employee and said a trailer had been finished several months before the cancellation: that person is not identified either.

The title is not settled either. 80 Level points out that an internal project often circulates under a working name that changes before release: “Mass Effect: Universe” may never have been the final name. As for Liara’s voice, two PC Gamer staff members say they are “pretty sure” it belongs to the original actress. That is not verified, and we do not claim it.

On the publisher side, we found no statement from EA about the video in the articles we read. We also found no takedown or copyright removal request: nothing is confirmed on that point this Friday, October 23, in the morning.

Pre-production footage, not the game

According to 80 Level, the video looks like an internal pre-production presentation: unfinished assets, uneven visual quality, no interface. The site also notes that it contains no identifiable gameplay and does not prove that its sequences ran in a playable build. It floats the idea of a target render, assembled to show the story, the mood and the visual direction.

That reading fits BioWare’s farewell message, which according to 80 Level described the project as in “early development” when it stopped. It clashes with the rumor from the purported EA employee, for whom the game was further along than believed: no source settles that point. The elements of the video (clothing, weapons, ships, the Krogan conflict) also match clues BioWare dropped in several N7 Day teasers (the series’ annual celebration).

What Mass Effect Universe says about the abandoned project

The images describe a Mass Effect less grand than the trilogy: after the Reaper War, an agent who cleans up crises rather than a hero who saves the galaxy. PC Gamer notes the absence of the N7 logo on the new character’s uniform and sees a possible story choice, which remains the journalist’s hypothesis. The same article concludes that, real or not, the video shows a Mass Effect it would definitely play.

80 Level also reports that former writers on the project have described on social media years of work they hoped to share soon, and that a BioWare cinematic supervisor spoke of an unprecedented level of player autonomy. Those are testimonies, not elements of the video. A.V. Club finally points out that Amazon MGM Studios continues to develop a Mass Effect TV series, despite the studio’s closure.

Our reading, from the cited sources alone: the leak proves a project existed with a defined art direction and tone, but not that it was close to release. We covered the closure itself in our article on the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect, and nothing we read says whether the license will be taken over by another studio. Mass Effect Universe remains a two-minute video and a project without a team.
