Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 launches on August 27, 2026. Announced price: $49.99. Available on PC via Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, on the same day, with no timed exclusivity on any platform. The collection brings together Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, two games that had long been hard to find on recent consoles.
The name that matters here is Metal Gear Solid 4. Released in 2008, it never left the PlayStation 3. Eighteen years later, this final chapter of Solid Snake’s story is finally arriving elsewhere. This wasn’t purely an editorial choice: the game was built around the Cell architecture, the PS3’s unusual processor, a hardware design that long made porting to other machines difficult.
Konami had announced this Master Collection Vol. 2 as early as February 12, 2026 on the PlayStation Blog, with the August 27 release date already set. Physical and digital pre-orders opened that same day. What remains is to detail what the collection includes beyond the two main games.
Eighteen Years Locked to a Single Console
The Cell, the multicore processor designed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba for the PS3, long gave developers trouble. Its structure, far removed from standard x86 chips, made porting big exclusive titles to PC or rival consoles expensive. Metal Gear Solid 4 paid the price for nearly two decades, alongside other ambitious PS3 exclusives that were never re-released elsewhere.
Peace Walker, for its part, had already received an HD treatment on PS3: it’s this version, the HD Collection, that serves as the basis for the game included in the collection. An upgraded PSP game, in other words, not a new overhaul.
The wait has been long for players who wanted to revisit Solid Snake’s conclusion without dusting off a PS3. Gamescom 2026 is also approaching, with its Opening Night Live schedule already revealed, but Konami got ahead of the game as early as February.
Konami is promising higher resolutions, smoother frame rates and modernized control schemes for both games. The single-player story arrives intact, with its original interactive database. These promises remain to be verified once the Master Collection Vol. 2 is in players’ hands on August 27.
What’s Inside the Master Collection Vol. 2
Both main games come with digital bonus content, accessible from a dedicated menu section.
The most notable bonus is Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, the series’ first handheld title, released in 2000. It’s directly selectable from the Bonus Content section. The digital soundtrack Metal Gear Solid: Digital Soundtrack Vol. 2 rounds out the package, also included in this Master Collection Vol. 2.
On Switch 2, the collection joins a library that’s only just starting to fill out, alongside Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition. On other platforms, nothing changes in price or release date.

No physical version differs from one platform to another, and all five platforms receive exactly the same content on the same day. Konami hasn’t reserved any bonus for a particular retailer.
Ghost Babel, the Handheld Surprise
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel came out in 2000 on the Game Boy Color, Nintendo’s handheld console. The title has barely ever been re-released since. Many fans of the series simply never had access to it, for lack of a re-release on a home console or PC. Seeing it slipped in as a bonus in this Master Collection Vol. 2 is a treat for anyone who has followed the series since its handheld beginnings, well before Peace Walker on PSP.
This isn’t the first time a publisher has dug up an old handheld title on the fringe of a big collection. But for a series as well-documented as Metal Gear, every episode brought back into circulation matters. Silent Hill: Townfall arrives on September 24, another Konami franchise, proof the publisher is stacking up releases this fall.
A Master Collection Focused on Archives
The Master Collection Vol. 2 doesn’t claim to be a graphical overhaul. It relies on three archival pieces: a Screenplay Book that reproduces the in-game text of both main titles, a Master Book that details the story and characters, and a Database that covers the lore from the very first Metal Gear through Metal Gear Solid 4.
Two pre-order bonuses round out the offer: the Cardboard Camouflage uniform in Metal Gear Solid 4, and the Love Cardboard uniform, or Love Box, in Peace Walker. Nods for series regulars, not additions that change the game.
This editorial choice for the Master Collection Vol. 2 favors access and documentation over a costly overhaul. Preserving a game from 2008 isn’t automatic: when a studio closes, its catalog often disappears with it, as shown by Netflix’s closure of Night School Studio six weeks after the release of its last game. A Screenplay Book, a Master Book and a Database are, on their own scale, a way of preserving what could have been lost.
One simple fact remains: starting August 27, 2026, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will no longer be a prisoner of a single console. Eighteen years after its release, the end of Solid Snake’s story finally becomes accessible elsewhere, with or without a PS3 plugged in.
