Overwatch Doctrine: Overwatch Doctrine Arrives, Sombra Becomes Support in Season 5

Article by Kami

A volcanic prison in Iceland, a full Talon roster, a prisoner everyone thought was dead. Blizzard chose this scene to unveil Overwatch Doctrine, the ninth hero of the year, on Saturday, September 12, at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony in Anaheim.

Game director Aaron Keller confirmed on stage that ten new heroes are coming in 2026, a figure repeated in Blizzard’s official recap, from Jetpack Cat (the internal nickname for a hero still kept secret) to an ally of Doomfist who reshuffles Talon’s deck. For anyone following the ceremony live, Overwatch Doctrine was playable in a trial as soon as the keynote ended, through September 14. Its full release awaits Season 5, set for October 6, with two hero reworks and a new map.

Overwatch Doctrine, Ninth Hero of the Year, Playable in Trial Through September 14

Overwatch Doctrine belongs to the Support role. His scepter heals allies and damages enemies on contact. He can dash through shadow to cross a fight, and his drones, mechanical bats, speed up teammates’ attacks while healing them. His signature ability, Infuse, transforms the next ability used. A simple dash becomes a flight.

In the cinematic shown at the opening, the freed prisoner tells his rescuers: « I would ask what brings you here, but clearly you need a hand. » Doomfist replies, « I should have come sooner, » and the newcomer closes the exchange with a simple « You’re here now. »

The Hero Trial, a temporary trial of a hero ahead of its official release, was already running on the show floor kiosks by the end of the presentation. From home, viewers just had to wait for the keynote to end to play it, through September 14.

Talon’s Story, for Anyone Who Missed a Year of Patches

Narrator Miranda Moyer recapped twelve months of story before moving on to Season 5. Earlier in the year, Vendetta challenged Doomfist for leadership of Talon and, in her own words, « presumably » killed him. She then pulled the organization out of the shadows to pursue world conquest.

Doomfist, presented as dead since the start of the year, survived. Arm severed, thrown through a window, he rebuilt himself behind the scenes before coming back to find an ally capable of helping him reclaim his place. That ally is Overwatch Doctrine.

Doctrine wasn’t the only reveal of the morning. The ceremony also opened the door to Diablo, Warcraft, and StarCraft, all covered in our BlizzCon 2026 recap.

Season 5 Arrives October 6 With a New Map and Two Reworks

The new map is called Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, an Escort mode set in the volcanic Icelandic prison seen in the cinematic. Blizzard is also bringing back older battle passes, called « unvaulted, » meaning passes that were already released and then pulled from the shop after their original season.

Roadhog is getting his second rework in a few years. The team wants him to finally help his team, and wants his hook-into-instant-kill combo, a source of frustration for seasons, to lose some of its edge. Competitively, this move makes sense: a one-sided kill that leaves the target no chance to react breaks more high-level games than it wins for the player triggering it.

Sombra, meanwhile, is leaving the Damage role to become Support. That bet is riskier. Her entire kit, invisibility and hacking, was designed for infiltration and picking off an isolated enemy, not for holding a healing line. If Blizzard doesn’t recalibrate her damage output in depth, she will end up ignored in ranked play, like most heroes moved to a new role before her.

StoryConclusion of The Reign of Talon

The Reign of Talon is the first story told over an entire year in Overwatch’s history, and Season 5 closes it. The developers are committing to a long-form narrative rather than a string of disconnected events, even if it asks returning players to remember more.

A Tenth Hero in Season 6, Then a First Look Back at Ten Years

Season 6 will bring the tenth and final hero of the year, presented on stage as someone investigating certain parts of the world. No other hint was given. By playing a match after the ceremony, every viewer receives a Mythic Voucher, redeemable for a mythic skin from Seasons 1 through 14, to be claimed before October 5.

The next Overwatch Spotlight, the game’s big annual showcase, is set for February 2027, with a new story, new heroes, and new systems. The game turns ten in 2026, and this Season 5 closes its first complete narrative arc before opening a new chapter. That same weekend in Anaheim, the World of Warcraft AWC returns for its finale on Sunday, on the same stage.

Music, Tabletop Role-Playing, and an Auction for Make-A-Wish

YOASOBI performs Sunday during the Overwatch World Cup, the game’s international competition. LE SSERAFIM closes out BlizzCon, and a new in-game collaboration is available now in the shop. The group is also joining a panel about the music video for their track « Made My Night. »

That same weekend, just a few feet from the Overwatch stage, Hearthstone unveiled its next expansion and its first new class in six years.

Sunday at 12 p.m. Pacific time, Blizzard is hosting QuestWatch, a tabletop role-playing session played live on the same stage, written by Matt Mercer and Overwatch’s narrative team. Mercer plays Cassidy, the game master for a party of heroes made up of Symmetra, Sombra, Reinhardt, and Vendetta. The session is followed by an auction, miniatures, original art, and a jacket signed by the team, benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
