Eight weeks. That’s the time between the release of Moss: The Forgotten Relic and the studio’s announcement that it was closing. Polyarc, the American team behind the Moss virtual reality series, shut its doors on September 11, 2026, on LinkedIn, just weeks after shipping its third and final game.
The studio had existed for nearly twelve years. Three games in total, a small mouse named Quill who became a familiar face in VR headsets, and a solid reputation with critics. Then nothing. No acquisition announced, no restructuring, no continuity plan. Just a farewell message, and total silence on the reasons why.
An announcement with no explanation
Word came through Game Informer, in an article by Marcus Stewart published on September 11, 2026 at 5:00 PM. The piece quotes Polyarc’s statement in full, a short, almost reserved declaration that makes no mention of financial trouble, commercial failure, or a strategic decision.
The studio wrote: « After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end. » Then: « As we wind down active development, we are saying our farewells to each other. »

Two more personal sentences close the statement: « Working together over all of these years has been an honor. Bringing surprise and delight to those who played our games has been a privilege. » And finally: « Thank you to everyone at Polyarc, our work is now finished. »
No layoff numbers were disclosed. The studio does not say how many people were still working on The Forgotten Relic at the time of its release, nor what has become of them today.
Twelve years, three games, one mouse
Founded around 2014, Polyarc shipped only three titles in twelve years of existence, all centered on Quill, the small mouse the player guides and protects in virtual reality. Moss came out in 2018 and immediately established the studio as a benchmark of the genre, praised for its tender writing and art direction. Moss: Book II followed in 2022, to an equally warm reception. Moss: The Forgotten Relic, released in July 2026, completes the trilogy and also arrives on consoles, well beyond the strict VR scope of the first two entries.
A slow pace, but a steady one. Three games in twelve years for a studio that never published anything beyond the Moss trilogy. That choice to stick to a single franchise, in a VR market that remains niche, shaped Polyarc’s entire identity right up to the end.

Polyarc’s official website still displays the full trilogy, with no mention of the closure at the time this article was written. No takedown date has been announced, no message to players appears on the homepage.
What the silence leaves unanswered
A studio closes two months after releasing its game, and no one explains why. No poor sales are cited, no publisher restructuring mentioned, no acquisition that would explain a sudden shutdown. The statement says what has ended, never what caused it. That silence is itself a piece of information, perhaps the only certainty players will ever get about this closure.
That leaves the question of support. Nothing indicates whether the three Moss games will keep receiving patches, whether the servers tied to The Forgotten Relic will stay online, or whether the trilogy will simply become a frozen object, purchasable but unmaintained. This uncertainty isn’t unique to this studio. It ties into a broader concern about how studios communicate, or don’t, with the players who invested in their games, a topic we already dug into regarding players’ trust in the industry.
For now, all that’s left is three games, a mouse, and a farewell message a few lines long. What will become of Quill, now that those who created her have finished their work?
