State of Play, September 3: Sorting Confirmed from Rumor

State of Play: Sorting Confirmed from Rumor on September 3

Article de Kami

April 8, 2027. The date the Remake trilogy had been building toward for years dropped right at the end of the State of Play, after a long demo that moved from desert to submarine, then to mountain.

The day before, in a post signed by Sachie Kobari on the PlayStation Blog, Sony promised « updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, concluding with an extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation. » Two broadcasts ran back to back on September 3 at 3 p.m. Paris time: the general broadcast, then a State of Play Japan hosted by Yuki Kaji, in Japanese with English subtitles.

No runtime for this State of Play had been announced in advance. The lineup broke down into four buckets: a release date finally locked in, brand-new reveals, trailers already seen back in June, and no-shows that kept the rumor mill spinning. Here’s how to sort it all out.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the One Real Date Everyone Was Waiting For

Square Enix saved its piece for last, and it arrived last, as expected: Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on PS5 on April 8, 2027, confirms Zorine Te on the PlayStation Blog. This third and final chapter of the Remake trilogy, after Remake and Rebirth, unfolds across « a vast open world realized on an unprecedented scale, » to be explored aboard the Highwind.

PlayStation Blog post from September 3, 2026 titled Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on PS5 April 8, 2027, with the official key art bringing together Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Zack, Sephiroth and Red XIII in the clouds
PlayStation Blog, Zorine Te (Square Enix), September 3, 2026: the April 8, 2027 release date and the official key art for Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

The chocobo Piko serves as a mount and combat ally, character switching becomes dynamic during exploration, and Yuffie gets a grappling hook to climb rooftops. The FITS system hands out four specialized uniforms, Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner, each changing abilities and outfit: Cid wears the Knight, Vincent the Summoner. The Queen’s Blood minigame returns with a storyline centered on Red XIII, and the player’s choices affect the outcome of certain quests.

Pre-orders are open, with the Mecha-Chocobo and the Moogle Summon Materia as bonuses. The Premium Edition adds a Story Expansion Pass and 24 hours of early access; the Premium Plus Edition adds a digital art book, a mini soundtrack, and an extra materia and armor piece. Prices have not been announced.

Some confusion remains about platforms: a few days before the show, GamesRadar floated a « spring 2027 » release across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC, while the official September 3 post mentions only PS5. Cande Maldonado, for Dexerto, describes a demo moving through desert, submarine and mountain, with fights against Cockatrice and a round of Queen’s Blood. Ben Brosofsky, for ScreenRant, adds parachute jumps from the Highwind, a cat photo session in Wutai, and the opening of pre-orders for a compilation, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy Edition. His closing line: « And that’s a wrap! »

What’s New, Game by Game

This first State of Play mostly served to break the silence around a batch of games. About a dozen titles landed with a firm date or a first on-screen appearance.

What Was Just a Confirmation

Three games took up airtime without adding any new information: the essentials were already circulating before September 3.

Marvel’s Wolverine, from Insomniac, got one last State of Play trailer ahead of its September 15 release on PS5, with Jean Grey and Mystique on screen, according to Dexerto. The date had been circulating since February 24: in a six-second video, Insomniac opened with « Let’s cut to the chase: Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026, » reported Game Informer.

Ghost of Yōtei showed gameplay from its narrative expansion Echoes of Sekigahara, centered on the character Nagato, and from its roguelike survival mode Most Wanted, with Oyuki and Nagato playable. According to ScreenRant, Jin Sakai himself was playable on screen during the show. It all arrives October 1 in the Complete Edition for $69.99, or as a $14.99 upgrade for owners of the base game: an announcement made as early as August 12 on the PlayStation Blog.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance got a new State of Play trailer for the Skybound Eyrie zone, home to ancient dragons including Kushala Daora. The release window remains « 2027, » with no firm date: TheGamer sums it up in one line, « Sorry, still no release date. »

Intergalactic and God of War, the No-Shows Rumor Had Invited

The most anticipated game of the show never showed up. On August 31 at 4:30 p.m. Pacific time, the Naughty Dog X account wrote: « ‘See you, space cowboy…’ That is a wrap on the very ambitious Intergalactic cinematic shoot! This cast killed it! Cannot wait to show you their incredible work when the time is right! » The post, accompanied by a photo of an actress in a motion-capture suit, gun in hand, had racked up 4.8 million views by September 3.

Kotaku, Kenneth Shepard, August 31, 2026: « The PS5 exclusive has been MIA since its original reveal in 2024. »

The post had raised hopes. Kenneth Shepard, for Kotaku, noted that the game had been « MIA since its original reveal in 2024. » His colleague Ethan Gach wrote: « Fans have wanted a fresh glimpse of the new Naughty Dog sci-fi action game for a while as rumors swirl about its development. » The game ultimately showed up in neither the main show nor its Japanese counterpart: « when the time is right » wasn’t September 3. The next plausible window remains December’s Game Awards, at this stage just a guess.

God of War Laufey, for its part, got no new footage at all. Revealed at the June 2 State of Play, dated for February 16, 2027 at San Diego Comic-Con, Santa Monica Studio’s game stayed silent this September 3.

Both no-shows land in an already tense climate around the brand, between the PlayStation blackout and the license terms Sony reissued. Meanwhile, Amazon’s God of War series is moving forward on its own.

State of Play Japan and the Calendar to Remember

The second broadcast, State of Play Japan, in Japanese with English subtitles, opened with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3: more than 130 characters announced for 2027, including NPCs to learn new techniques from. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World followed, dated for December 3 with pre-orders already open and mechanics inherited from Dragon Quest V.

According to GameSpot, no new trailer for God of War Laufey or Intergalactic aired during this second broadcast: both games will wait for another occasion. Sony knows how to dedicate an entire show to a single title, too: Phantom Blade Zero had its own dedicated broadcast on August 17.
