Johanna Faries had barely stepped onto the stage in Anaheim on Saturday, September 12, when she dropped a confession. She had warned her team she wouldn’t come to this BlizzCon without « something real » to show. Two minutes later, the screen faded to a face every World of Warcraft player recognizes: Xal’atath. Xal’atath HotS was the very first announcement of the opening ceremony. Before Diablo, before Warcraft, before StarCraft.
Blizzard’s president had never held this microphone in this role before. She says it herself on stage: « this is by no means my first BlizzCon, but it is my first one standing on this stage in this capacity. » The choice of her very first reveal says a lot about the studio’s priorities this year.
An Opening Choice That Was No Accident
Faries warns the developers set to take the stage throughout the day: the crowd is about to hear things close to their hearts, including « something near and dear to mine, » about her very first announcement. BlizzCon 2026 runs September 12 and 13 at the Anaheim Convention Center, with a free stream that let fans follow it without a ticket.

The curtain drops on a cinematic. One voice says « this realm belongs to me, » another answers « this pleases me. » Then the screen shows a name, and the crowd understands before the official announcement even lands.
Xal’atath HotS: A Tight Schedule
World of Warcraft’s own villain, straight out of the Worldsoul Saga, joins the Heroes of the Storm roster. The schedule comes down to three dates, and it’s a tight one for a game that isn’t used to this kind of pace anymore.

| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Playable at the Blizzard Arcade (show floor) | September 12-13, 2026 |
| Available on the PTR | Monday, September 14, 2026 |
| Official release in Heroes of the Storm | September 28, 2026 |
The PTR (the public test realm, where Blizzard lets players try a patch before it ships) opens two days after BlizzCon ends. Two weeks then separate the PTR from the official release.
A Game Everyone Thought Was Shelved
Heroes of the Storm has been running on reduced maintenance since 2022. Blizzard fixes bugs, rebalances things here and there, but hasn’t built much that’s truly new in years. Xal’atath HotS is billed as the first genuinely new hero in a long time. Her role and her kit aren’t detailed anywhere: Game Informer simply describes her as a fighter, with no further detail.

Faries then speaks directly to the community that stuck around. « I hear you. I see you, » she says, thanking players for « carrying the torch. » She leaves the door open for what’s next: « we might even have another new hero on the way in the near future. » No name, no concrete lead behind that sentence.
Why Xal’atath, and Why Now
In World of Warcraft, Xal’atath is going after the Worldcore, the heart of the world, in Eclipse, the 12.2 patch meant to close out this story arc. The Worldsoul Saga is at its midpoint, carried since this summer by Midnight Season 2, which opened on August 18. Xal’atath HotS isn’t some minor character dusted off to pad out a roster. She’s the biggest antagonist of the moment, the one already dominating every conversation on the Warcraft side.
For a dedicated World of Warcraft player, rolling out this figure in a game almost nobody expected anything from looks less like a gift to Heroes of the Storm fans than a way to pump another franchise’s narrative capital into a title running on fumes. The symbol matters more than the kit, and Blizzard knows it well. Faries didn’t pick Overwatch or Diablo to open her very first major announcement as president. She picked the game the company had left behind.
What Remains Unclear
Neither Blizzard nor the press on the ground in Anaheim detailed Xal’atath HotS’s abilities. No role announced, no gameplay footage, no kit published. The official recap posted by Blizzard confirms the three dates without saying more, and the full ceremony video shows only the cinematic and the character’s name.
The role, the kit, and the exact spot in the roster stay unknown until the PTR launches on Monday, September 14. One thing is already measurable: to open its biggest announcement of the year, Blizzard didn’t bet on its most profitable franchises. It bet on the one everyone said was dead.
