Build Overview
This Warrior build built around
Nightfall relies on a unique shield that grants two linked skills:
Soaring Midnight (the throw) and
Embrace The Fall (the teleport-slam with a large area of effect and a high base critical strike chance). The whole build’s mechanic revolves around the 4-second cooldown of these skills, which is reset by destroying an ice crystal from
Grim Pillars during the slam, or by catching the shield on its return. Lexd presents here a budget version (around 30 to 40 divines) where other versions of the same concept exceed 400 divines.
For clearing, the rotation is simple: drop
Grim Pillars where you want to hit, then slam with
Embrace The Fall to devastate everything. The unique item
The Coming Calamity strips all elemental resistances from nearby enemies and unlocks a free triple Herald (Ice, Fire, Lightning) with no Spirit cost. In boss fights, swap to the second weapon set, stack ancestral attacks with
Infernal Cry, apply
Freezing Mark, then hammer
Grim Pillars and slam until the boss dies — with around a 52% critical strike chance, a few slams are often enough to finish it off.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Extremely fast clear speed, faster than the author’s Smith of Kitava build
- Very accessible budget version (~30-40 divines) versus 400+ divines for high-end versions
- Capable of farming 200% Delirium without major issues
- Simple clear combo (
Grim Pillars + slam) once you get the routine down - Solid boss setup thanks to the ancestral attack stacking and high critical strike chance
- Free triple Herald (no Spirit cost) thanks to
The Coming Calamity
❌ Weaknesses
- Offensive build, not tanky: defense comes mainly from positioning and
Refutation - Animation lock: the throw must finish before you can teleport, which can make you miss the target with high projectile speed
- Risk of being stunned during the fall animation if the shield is thrown into too dense a pack
- 4-second cooldown management that needs to be mastered (positioning, timing of
Grim Pillars)
Skill Gem Setup by Step

Default
10 skills • 57 gemmesRecommended Equipment
- Shield:
Nightfall (unique) — budget ~10 divines for a level 18 skill gem with a good armour roll, essential since the whole build relies on its two granted skills - 2-Handed Weapon: a rare weapon with +5 to level of melee skills, an elemental damage to attacks roll, and a crafted cold or lightning damage gain (for more shocks)
- Weapon Rune: rune ancient rune of the titan (socketable only in a 2-handed weapon) to increase Aftershock chance, and Saqawal’s Rune of the Sky for 5% damage converted to damage of all elements
- Chest:
The Coming Calamity (unique) — unlocks all three Heralds for free and removes elemental resistances from nearby enemies - Amulet:
Astramentis, to meet the stat requirements needed for the three Heralds - Ring: a cold-focused breach ring (cold damage to attacks, cold damage, cold resistance)
- Jewels: standard sapphires (cold damage, critical chance, critical damage bonus) and a diamond
Heart of the Well (lightning damage, critical chance, up to +60% life for ice crystals) - Anointment:
notable Ice Walls, cheap and highly synergistic with
Grim Pillars and
Verglas - Charm: The Fall of the Axe (unique), alongside a Dousing Charm and a Transcendent Mana Flask
Gameplay Tips
- Always place Grim Pillars before slamming to guarantee the cooldown reset of
Nightfall - Weapon swap: the first set for clearing (AoE), the second for bosses (damage)
- Use Refutation in dangerous situations to block damage and inflict the
Parry debuff (+50% damage taken by the target) - Mind your positioning: avoid throwing the shield into an area with too many ground effects or overlapping novas
- In boss fights, place
Freezing Mark then
Infernal Cry to stack ancestral attacks before unleashing the damage burst - Aim for a Gavel of Ko’on eventually to guarantee critical hits (near 100% crit chance with ~50% base, and some doubled crits)
Core Mechanic of this Warrior Nightfall Build
The
Nightfall shield grants two distinct skills:
Soaring Midnight, the projectile throw, and
Embrace The Fall, the large-area teleport-slam with a high base critical strike chance. GGG teased this weapon before the league launch with spectacular slam clips sweeping entire packs of enemies into explosions of ice — and in practice, it delivers once the cooldown mechanic is mastered.
The key point to understand is the 4-second cooldown shared by both skills. It triggers either by teleporting to the shield to slam, or by missing the shield on its return throw (the cooldown does reset if you catch it). To be able to slam frequently despite this cooldown, you need to destroy an ice crystal from
Grim Pillars during the slam, which immediately resets the cooldown.
Managing the 4-Second Cooldown
Three approaches let you manage this cooldown depending on your target budget. The first is to automate ice crystal destruction with
Hrimnors Hymn (a low-level unique two-handed mace, level 4) combined with Cast on Elemental Ailment socketed with
Grim Pillars: each slam freezes enemies, which generates ice crystals that get destroyed automatically, triggering the guaranteed retaliation from
Hrimnors Hymn. The downside of this approach is that it sacrifices the weapon slot and therefore a good chunk of damage.
The second option is to stack cooldown reduction on jewels and the passive tree, which lets you bring the cooldown down to about 2 seconds without sacrificing the weapon slot. The third, the one used by Lexd in this budget build, is simply to cast
Grim Pillars manually before each slam — making it a two-button build rather than a one-button one, but it remains very simple to execute once you’ve got the routine down.
Animation Lock and Positioning
One thing to know before diving in: the throw animation must finish before the character can teleport and catch the shield. With a lot of projectile speed, this can cause you to completely miss a nearby target, as the shield keeps traveling while the animation finishes. Positioning is therefore essential with this build.
Another point of caution: if the shield is thrown into too dense an area, there’s a real risk of getting stunned coming out of the
Embrace The Fall animation, which can be fatal if you end up surrounded. This is why the build relies on
Refutation (active block) rather than pure passive survival — blocking hits at the right moment avoids most dangerous situations.
Progression Toward the Optimized Version
For those who want to push this Warrior
Nightfall build further, several improvement paths exist. A
From Nothing diamond (around 80 divines) lets you grab additional critical damage and critical chance nodes near the Resonance area of the passive tree. A Gavel of Ko’on, combined with an already high critical rate, lets you guarantee almost 100% critical hit chance and turn some of them into « super crits ».
Finally, to reach 100% Aftershock chance without sacrificing the weapon slot, it is possible to use an
Aldurs Legacy on a
Hrimnors Hymn to turn its unique power into a socketable, to be inserted directly into the rare two-handed weapon. This is a costly investment, but one that perfectly complements the Aftershock chance already gained through the Titan ascendancy and runes.
