Build Overview
The Disciple of Varashta Plant Build by Goratha is an ultra-solid Sorceress league starter, updated for the Return of the Ancients patch. The concept revolves around
Thrashing Vines, a tier 9 plant skill (gem level 31) that deals massive physical area damage, complemented by
Thunderstorm on weapon set 2 to spread
Shock and amplify total DPS. The key synergy comes from
Living Lightning, which automatically extracts the
Impale stacks placed by the vines, creating a damage loop that scales with two very different stat types (plant + lightning).
The Disciple of Varashta ascendancy was chosen for its exceptional survivability and minions. The « four teaching » node provides -1 second to Energy Shield recharge delay — one of the only sources of this stat in the entire game after the RotA nerfs. Combined with Carrion and Rison (the two Barghests used), Polari (which applies Critical Weakness via
Barrage), and
notable Instruments of Power (which allows a rare focus in addition to the staff), the ascendancy turns the character into a tanky bulldozer capable of clearing the entire campaign without weak points, then pushing into T15+ maps and beyond.
Goratha confirms having cleared the entire game in the previous season with this build, never feeling weak. Despite the RotA nerfs (reduced ES recharge,
Shock Conduction II removed from
Thunderstorm), the build remains an excellent Season 5 choice — particularly for players who want a versatile league starter that can also serve as an endgame farmer.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Complete league starter: clears the entire campaign without progression walls, no mandatory gear to farm.
- Exceptional survivability: -1s on the Energy Shield recharge delay via the ascendancy node, plus massive physical damage reduction thanks to high ES.
- Very good clear speed:
Thrashing Vines +
Thunderstorm in weapon set 2 = double damage layer (plant phys + lightning shock) that sweeps packs without downtime. - Solid Boss DPS: Polari applies Critical Weakness automatically via Barrage, massively boosting crit damage, and Kurgals Leash adds Unholy Might to every command.
- Auto cleanse of damaging ailments: the Amanamu’s Gaze augment on the helmet removes ailments on every command skill — a skill with very low cooldown and fast cast.
- Versatile: can be leveled as a pure minion build (via Carrion), then respecced into plant at maps if you want an ultra-fast campaign clear.
❌ Weaknesses
- Leveling gap 1-31:
Thrashing Vines only arrives at level 31 (gem tier 9). Before that, DPS is low — Goratha recommends
Bonestorm to bridge the gap. - ES recovery nerf (RotA): all « faster start of recharge » nodes have been removed from the tree and gear. Recovery is slower than the previous season.
- Nerf Thunderstorm shock:
Shock Conduction II has been removed — you need to compensate via the tree and the Shock gem to maintain 100% shock uptime. - Complex build to understand: weapon swap, command skulls, command skills (Polari), Instruments of Power… there are many mechanics to master to get 100% out of the build.

- Main Weapon (Set 1) : Rare staff with maximum Spell Damage, Cast Speed and Mana. This is the weapon that carries
Thrashing Vines,
Entangle and the entire plant setup. - Focus (Set 1) : Rare focus with Spell Damage, ES and Mana. Thanks to notable Instruments of Power, the ascendancy allows simultaneous use of a focus with a staff — which is normally impossible.
- Weapon Set 2 : Staff dedicated to
Thunderstorm with Shock Magnitude and Chance to Shock. The dedicated shock weapon swap boosts ALL plant damage via the shock magnitude mechanic. - Helmet : Helm with high ES, intelligence and resistances. The key augment is Amanamu’s Gaze which automatically removes damaging ailments on each command skill.
- Body Armour : Pure ES armour. Before RotA we looked for « faster start recharge » — now it’s removed from gear, we prioritize raw ES and resistances.
- Signature support gem : Kurgals Leash — the Disciple of Varashta ascendancy support. Grants Unholy Might on each command skull used, and Carrion + Rison both have integrated command skulls.
- Gloves / boots / belt : rares with ES + resistances + life. Boots must provide movement speed (35%+).
- Rings : ES, resistances, attributes. Prefer double tri-elem if possible.
- Jewels : focus on ES%, elemental damage, plant damage and lightning damage. Keep a slot for a jewel offering shock chance to compensate for the loss of
Shock Conduction II.
Gameplay Tips
- Spam command skills : the command skull has a very low cooldown and fast cast. The movement penalty goes from 70% to 50% in RotA — don’t hesitate to place it while moving.
- Active weapon swap in combat : alternate Set 1 (plant) and Set 2 (
Thunderstorm) to stack buffs from both damage types simultaneously. Set 2 isn’t just for applying shock — it also scales your plant skills via shock magnitude. - Polari = your boss killer : use Barrage to trigger Critical Weakness on bosses, then chain command skulls to stack Unholy Might. This is the combo that makes Varashta much stronger than Oracle in single-target.
- Mana = not a problem : with Mana Tempest, Mana Remnants and Sigil of Power, your mana sustain is guaranteed. No need for Mind over Matter or anything else.
- Keep Convalescence active : despite the RotA nerfs to external ES recharge rate sources,
Convalescence remains a pillar of survival. The support gem and the node on the tree (same name) have been removed, but the core gem is still there. - Don’t neglect the Charm slots : with the ES build, a Charm against damaging ailments (poison, ignite, bleeding) is a great comfort in mapping.
Disciple of Varashta vs Oracle: why this ascendancy?
The PoE2 Sorceress has several viable ascendancies for plant builds, but Goratha strongly argues in favor of Disciple of Varashta over Oracle. The main reason is baseline tankiness: Varashta offers the « four teaching » node which removes 1 second from the start of energy shield recharge delay. This is one of the only sources of this stat in the entire RotA patch, and it’s essential for an ES build to remain playable in endgame after the recent nerfs.
On top of that, Varashta grants access to extremely powerful minion abilities through Barghests (Carrion, Rison, Polari). Carrion in particular provides a command ability, and its interaction with
Kurgals Leash is game-changing: every command skull used grants the player Unholy Might. Polari, on the other hand, applies Critical Weakness via Barrage — a huge mono-target boost. And
notable Instruments of Power lets you wield a rare focus alongside the staff (which is normally impossible), multiplying both your offensive and defensive stat sources.
Oracle, on the other hand, relies on strength stacking scaling with Black Scythe Training (a keystone jewel from Expedition) which converts stacked strength into ES. But the ascendancy stays squishier, and the only really interesting node for the plant build is one damage scaling node based on strength stacking. Goratha’s verdict: Varashta wins on every axis — tankiness, damage, versatility — and it’s the best Sorceress ascendancy for the plant build in Season 5.
Weapon Set 2 Setup: Thunderstorm and shock scaling
Weapon swap is a cornerstone of this build, and Goratha dedicates a significant portion of the video to it. Set 1 is dedicated to plant + impale + phys damage (staff + rare focus with Spell Damage). Set 2, on the other hand, carries
Thunderstorm and all the associated stats: Shock Magnitude, Chance to Shock, and Lightning Damage.
Why this setup? Because the shock mechanic in PoE2 increases damage taken by enemies — including plant damage. The higher the shock magnitude, the harder your
Thrashing Vines hit. It’s an indirect but massive damage multiplier. Combined with
Thunderstorm which drenches enemies and applies shock in an area, it’s a very efficient clear combo.
With the RotA nerf (
Shock Conduction II removed, which guaranteed shock on drenched enemies), you now need to compensate. Goratha advises pushing shock chance on the passive tree and on support gems.
Shock Conduction I remains an excellent support (spreads shock between enemies). In addition,
Living Lightning can be linked to
Thunderstorm to add an extra layer of damage and extract the impales from Set 1.
Leveling options: Bonestorm or pure minion
The biggest challenge of Disciple of Varashta leveling is the gap between
Entangle (level 4) and
Thrashing Vines (level 31). During this stretch, the build has no tier-9 plant skill and DPS is weak. Goratha offers two concrete solutions to bridge this gap.
Option 1 —
Bonestorm gap filler: the
Bonestorm gem becomes available very early in the campaign and deals solid burst AoE damage. This is the simplest path: you take
Bonestorm as soon as possible, play it through level 31, then drop the gem in favor of
Thrashing Vines. No respec needed, just a gem swap.
Option 2 — Pure minion via Carrion: if you want the fastest campaign, level directly as a minion build via Carrion and the minion nodes of Disciple of Varashta. You take the Carrion ascendancy (the Barghest minions), rush the minion damage nodes on the tree, and run the entire campaign with this setup. Once you reach maps, respec into plant with
Thrashing Vines. It’s faster but requires a respec of 50+ points.
Important note: both options also apply to any Sorceress plant league starter — it’s a classic pattern for the Disciple of Varashta. For those who aren’t in a rush, the «
Bonestorm gap filler » route is more than enough.
Endgame mechanics: command skulls, Polari, and Instruments of Power
Once in endgame, the build really kicks into gear. Three mechanics are the signature of the Disciple of Varashta plant build.
1. Command skulls +
Kurgals Leash: Carrion (and to a lesser extent Rison) have command skulls — orders you trigger manually (for example, telling Carrion to use its dagger ability). With the
Kurgals Leash support gem, every command skull used triggers Unholy Might: a powerful buff that adds chaos damage to all your attacks. The cooldown is very low, you can spam this trigger almost constantly.
2. Polari + Critical Weakness: Polari (one of the Barghest minions) has a special ability called Barrage that applies Critical Weakness to enemies hit. It’s a big stat that increases the crit chance received by the target. On bosses, it’s the key mechanic that turns Varashta into a boss killer: you trigger Polari → Critical Weakness applied → you pop your plant + thunder burst, and bosses melt fast.
3.
notable Instruments of Power: this ascendancy node allows the simultaneous use of a staff and a focus — normally, the staff occupies both hands. Concretely, you wear a rare focus loaded with Spell Damage, ES, and Cast Speed in addition to your staff. It’s a colossal stat boost that gives Varashta far more baseline power than the other Sorceress ascendancies.
On top of these three pillars, the build benefits from RotA patch fixes:
Living Lightning II had a scaling bug last season that’s now fixed. The command skull movement penalty is also reduced (70% → 50%), so you can cast it more easily while moving. These small buffs partially offset the ES and
Thunderstorm nerfs.
