Build Overview

The Death Pulse build is a bleed build for the Gemling Legionnaire (Mercenary) in Path of Exile 2 Season 0.5, built around War Cries. Its creator describes it as « the most satisfying build he has ever played », and its main strength lies not so much in raw power as in the feel of the gameplay: you trigger a War Cry, the entire screen fills with bleed explosions, then you run — and you just keep running. The author recalls reaching level 97 in a race against two friends playing far more expensive builds, simply because he couldn’t stop playing.

The concept is deceptively simple: a single click releases three reverberating shots, then it’s « run, Forrest, run ». Movement speed is at the heart of the experience. The build gains a bonus to dodge roll distance on the boots, which lets you breeze through zones notorious for their tight corridors, such as the Quay Manor Stockades. This is a « run-and-explode » build: you move forward, everything dies in your wake.

The damage engine relies entirely on bleed: War Cries amplify attacks, the Herald of BloodHerald of Blood causes bleeding enemies to explode, and a pair of unique gloves doubles the on-death effects of a monster — meaning twice as many bleed explosions. Scaling is achieved solely through gem levels (+2 and above) and global physical damage modifiers, the overwhelming majority of which come from jewels. This build requires few truly pivotal gems, but calls for thoughtful investment in jewels and a handful of well-chosen unique items.

Strengths / Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Exceptional Clear Speed: you move forward and everything explodes in your wake — ideal for Mapping
  • Very satisfying feel: bleed explosions chain together in a cascade
  • Ultra-simple gem setup: only 4 gems truly matter, the rest are supplementary
  • Low mental load: one click releases three shots, then you run
  • Dodge roll integrated into gameplay thanks to the dodge roll distance bonus on boots
  • Excellent mobility to navigate even the tightest zones

❌ Weaknesses

  • Limited damage scaling: power only increases through gem levels and global physical damage
  • Heavily jewel-dependent: the bulk of the damage comes from jewels, requiring thoughtful investment
  • Several required uniques and a difficult-to-craft rare helmet to reach full potential
  • Life pool to monitor: the build only feels truly smooth from 3,000 life points onwards

Recommended Equipment

The equipment philosophy of this build is simple: stack fire gem levels and physical damage modifiers, while giving absolute priority to jewels. Here are the key pieces, slot by slot.

  • Amulet — Fireflower: the main source of levels, up to +4 to all fire skills. You can push it to +5 with a Vaal Orb Infuser (25 quality) or try the corrupt that takes it from +4 to +6. Note: no need to pay extra for 25 quality, the +4 → +6 corrupt is enough. Enchant with Jack of all trades (the Spirit bonus is important, aim for +15).
  • Off-hand — Sunsplinter: purely for the +2 fire spell levels. Aim for the +4 version (i.e. a corrupted +3 that becomes +4). Be careful when buying: only +3 can become +4, never buy +1 or +2. A two-socket variant exists and provides a useful socket.
  • Weapon — Saitha’s Spear: this spear is chosen purely for the +1 to fire spells. Ideally, buy a two-socket version, rune-forge it, then corrupt it to try for a third socket, and finally use a Vaal Cultivation Orb for the +1.
  • Gloves — Killjoy: the cornerstone of the build. These unique gloves double the effects triggered on enemy death, therefore doubling the number of bleed explosions.
  • Body Armour — Atziri’s Splendour: provides an additional +1 level. Aim for at least 2,000 armour and 15 to all resistances (do not go below that). A more accessible alternative: the The Coming CalamityThe Coming Calamity, which offers a lot of damage through the Herald boost. Socket with chaos resistance soul cores (or life cores if you don’t need chaos res).
  • Helmet — rare crafted (recommended) or Crown of the Victor: the author strongly prefers a rare helmet. The crucial mod to fracture is 5% life on War Cry, followed by War Cry damage, War Cry area of effect, then War Cry speed or cooldown. The Crown of the VictorCrown of the Victor offers a +1 but falls short.
  • Ring 1 — Safrin’s Resolve: used for an extra jewel socket, jewels being that important. Get the highest rarity possible. Best corrupts: damage, then rarity, then chaos res, then all resistances.
  • Ring 2 + Boots: focus on life, then balance your resistances. If your resistances are already covered, take stats (which give more damage via Jack of all trades). Boots provide the valuable dodge roll distance bonus.
  • Belt — Mageblood (ideal): without MagebloodMageblood, a simple resistance belt with life works perfectly fine. With MagebloodMageblood, prioritize movement speed: the faster the build, the more enjoyable it is. Recommended flasks: quicksilver, gold and sulfur (or bismuth/granite/amethyst for a tankier version).
  • Prism of Belief +3: a big gain for War Cries. Be careful, its price is often artificially inflated — it’s not worth paying a fortune, but if found at a good price, it’s clearly worth it.
  • Jewels (priority #1): this is where everything happens. Prefixes in order of importance: damage with War Cry, global physical damage, increased armour, block chance. Suffixes: War Cry speed, War Cry cooldown, life regeneration. A MegalomaniacMegalomaniac (with Agonizing Calamity for physical damage) is an optional bonus, but not essential.

Gameplay Tips

  • The basic rotation: a single click fires three reverberating shots, then you run. No need to overload your fingers, the build practically plays itself.
  • Integrate dodge rolls: once you get the hang of it, chain dodge rolls while running to cover even more ground and keep the pace.
  • Prioritize jewels from the start: since that’s where your damage is concentrated, invest in the best mod combinations your budget allows, as early as possible.
  • Aim for 3,000 life: the build is playable from 2,300 life (the author leveled this way), but everything truly flows smoothly from 3,000 onwards.
  • The helmet safety net: the 5% life on War Cry mod is crucial. If you get knocked down, you fire a War Cry and instantly return to full life — hence its status as the priority mod to fracture.
  • Maximize movement speed: in this build, every point of speed improves the gameplay feel. If you have a MagebloodMageblood, prioritize movement speed above everything else.

The Bleed Engine: How the Build Works

The entire build rests on a simple but devastatingly effective loop. War Cries amplify your attacks and apply bleed to enemies. Herald of Blood then takes over: it literally causes bleeding monsters to explode when they die, spreading death from one to the next. It’s this chain of explosions that gives the build its « blow everything up » feel.

The centerpiece of the combo is a pair of unique gloves, the Killjoy, which double the effects triggered on enemy death. In practice, this doubles the number of bleed explosions, turning a simple pack clear into a spectacular chain reaction. This is what takes the build from « fast » to « insanely satisfying », to quote its creator’s own words.

Optimizing Gem Levels

The only way to scale damage in this build is through gem levels (+2 and higher) combined with global physical damage. That’s why a large part of the equipment is chosen solely for its level bonuses. The Fireflower amulet does the heavy lifting with up to +4 (or even +5 or +6 when corrupted) to fire skills, while the Sunsplinter in the off-hand adds +2 fire spell levels and the Saitha’s Spear adds an additional +1.

The Atziri’s Splendour body armour provides another +1 level, and the Prism of BeliefPrism of Belief +3 crowns the whole setup on the War Cry side. Stacked together, all these level sources transform modest gems into a true damage engine — without ever touching the complexity of your rotation. That’s the elegance of this build: the power comes from the gear, not from the number of buttons to press.

The Central Role of Jewels

If there is one thing to remember, it’s this: invest in your jewels first. That is where the bulk of your overall physical damage comes from — to the point that the author uses a Safrin’s Resolve solely to gain one extra jewel socket.

On prefixes, aim in this order: War Cry damage, overall physical damage, increased armor and block chance (which also converts to damage on this build). On suffixes: War Cry speed, War Cry cooldown and life regeneration. Depending on your budget, seek the best combinations available — normal jewels are already very powerful here, and a Megalomaniac remains an optional luxury.

Configuring Mageblood and Flasks

The MagebloodMageblood is not mandatory — a resistance belt with life is more than enough to play the build well — but it elevates the experience. If you own one, movement speed is the absolute priority, as the build’s comfort depends directly on it.

On the flask side, several approaches are possible depending on your goal. For a balanced and profitable profile, the author recommends double gold, quicksilver and sulfur combinations (sulfur being phenomenal for damage). For a tankier version, lean toward bismuth, granite and amethyst, which open up your armor’s soul cores and increase your life. In any case, keep the 3,000 life target in mind to get the most out of the build’s full potential.
