Build Overview
The
Supporting Fire Tactician is presented as one of the most accessible league starters of Path of Exile 2 Season 0.5. Its strength lies in a three-phase progression that transforms a somewhat rough crossbow start into full easy mode once the Tactician ascendancy is unlocked.
The principle is straightforward: you level with a crossbow using
Explosive Grenade from levels 1 to 6, then transition to a minion build centered on Skeletal Snipers at level 6, and finally unlock the signature skill
Supporting Fire after ascending to Tactician (around level 22). From that point on, your minions deal the bulk of the damage while
Supporting Fire ignites and amplifies everything on screen.
The entire build revolves around the fire element:
Fire Attunement is linked to virtually every skill to ensure ignition, while
Frost Bomb applies exposure to further increase damage. No specific gear is required — the build works with equipment found while playing through the campaign, making it an ideal choice to start a season with no pressure and no investment.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Accessible league starter: no specific gear required, the build runs on loot found during the campaign
- Easy mode after ascendancy: once
Supporting Fire is unlocked, the rest of the campaign becomes trivial - High survivability: minions absorb hits on your behalf,
Raging Spirits and
Wolf Pack act as a safety net - max block setup in the late progression for very solid defence
- Near zero cost: the key pieces (+1 minion on the sceptre, +1/+2 minion on the helmet) can be found at vendors
- Reduced mental load: comfortable gameplay, you let the minions do the work
❌ Weaknesses
- Difficult early levels: the first 6 levels with the crossbow are the most demanding part of the run
- Ascendancy dependency: the build only reaches its full potential after ascending to Tactician
- Fragile minions: they die frequently and need to be re-summoned regularly
- Cooldown bug:
Supporting Fire can get stuck during boss phase 2 (you need to remove a support gem to reset the cooldown)
Skill Gem Setup by Step
This build offers 5 progression steps from leveling through to the final build. Select a step to see the corresponding skill gem setup.
lvl 1 to 6 – Crossbow
2 skills • 4 gemmeslvl 6 to 22 – Skeletal Snipers
4 skills • 9 gemmeslvl 22 to 36 – Supporting Fire Start
3 skills • 9 gemmeslvl 36 to 65 – Supporting Fire to Cartes
3 skills • 12 gemmesImported
6 skills • 19 gemmesRecommended Equipment
The absolute priority is to maximise the number of minion skills through gear. The rest can be filled with pieces found during the campaign and resistances to stay alive.
- Main weapon (sceptre): a sceptre with +1 to minion skills — the most important piece to look for at vendors
- Helmet: +1 then +2 to minion skills (fairly common from Act 4 onwards)
- Shield: increased block chance — perfect combo with the sceptre to reach max block
- Body armour: Blackbright Fuel Plate — an excellent low-level unique armour, ideal as soon as it drops
- Rings: Iron Ring for flat fire damage, complemented by resistances
- Crafted weapon: a desecrated base with a Jewel Bone (at the Well of Souls) to aim for +minion skills and +spirit — the weapon that can carry you through to the end of the run
- Spirit: anything that grants additional spirit allows you to summon more skeletons
Gameplay Tips
- Always Fire Attunement: link it to as many skills as possible to guarantee igniting your enemies
- Frost Bomb for exposure: apply it on tough enemies to significantly boost damage
- Adaptive area of effect:
Magnified Area I on maps for clear,
Concentrated Area on bosses for single target - Farm vendors: constantly check vendor inventories for +minion items
- Stun threshold over mana: mana is not an issue, but getting stunned mid-animation blocks the cooldown of
Supporting Fire - Trial of Sekhema: ignore most monsters and rush to the next room (10 to 15 minutes is enough)
- Invest in yourself late in the run: once minion damage is sufficient, shift the tree toward defense (max block)
The Three Progression Phases
This build is not set in stone: it evolves radically throughout the campaign. Understanding these three phases is the key to smooth leveling.
Phase 1 — Crossbow (Levels 1 to 6). This is the hardest stretch. We start with
Explosive Grenade, deliberately chosen because it shares the same support gems as our future minions. We attach
Multishot I and
Fire Attunement as soon as possible.
Frost Bomb completes the kit for exposure.
Phase 2 — Minions (Levels 6 to 22). Starting at Level 6, we learn Skeletal Snipers and transfer the supports from
Explosive Grenade to them. We add
Flame Wall to ignite packs, then
Raging Spirits as a safety net. Things become noticeably more comfortable.
Phase 3 —
Supporting Fire (Level 22 and beyond). After the ascendancy into Tactician, we unlock the signature skill
Supporting Fire. We drop
Flame Wall and
Raging Spirits to free up spirit and summon an additional skeleton. From this point on, the game quite literally switches to easy mode.
How Supporting Fire Works
Supporting Fire is the ascendancy skill that gives this build its name. Combined with
Fire Attunement, it ignites bosses and massively amplifies your minions’ damage. The core idea: your Skeletal Snipers always retain a portion of fire damage so they can ignite enemies, which triggers the entire rest of the chain.
We also use the
Bidding I support to increase cooldown recovery and add even more damage to the main skill.
Frost Bomb, socketed with
Overabundance I and
Spell Echo, is used to apply exposure more quickly. It is this combination of fire and exposure that makes the build so destructive despite its low cost.
Passive Tree Priority: Minion Cooldown Reduction
The number one goal of the passive tree is to reach the minion cooldown reduction nodes as quickly as possible. These are the ones that dramatically increase your damage output and overall playstyle comfort.
In the early game, we focus on intelligence to equip gems, then on strength for the minion nodes. The extra points gained along the way (quests, permanent bonuses) go toward survivability: armor, block chance, life regeneration. Late into progression, once damage is sufficient, we clearly shift to a max block setup to become very hard to kill.
Tip: The Supporting Fire Cooldown Bug on Bosses
An annoying behavior comes up regularly with
Supporting Fire: during the transition to the second phase of a boss fight, its cooldown gets stuck and the skill stops triggering. This is a known bug, and it can cost you dearly mid-fight.
The fix is simple: remove then re-socket one of the support gems on
Supporting Fire to reset its cooldown. Keep this in mind as soon as you notice the skill is no longer triggering in phase 2. This is also why we prioritize stun threshold over mana regeneration: getting stunned mid-animation triggers the full cooldown without any support, which can be fatal.
