Build Overview
Ronald’s Chaos ED +
Contagion Lich (@ronarray) is, according to the author, one of the best caster league starters of patch 0.5 « The Last of the Druids ». The build relies on the iconic combination
Essence Drain +
Contagion, to which the author now adds
Bonestorm for single target boss damage, along with the
Orb of Storms +
Living Lightning combo to proc
Impale bonuses in endgame.
The core mechanic is simple and brutal: you cast
Contagion as an area spell on a pack of monsters, then trigger
Essence Drain on the first target — when it dies, the chaos DoT automatically spreads to the entire pack via
Contagion, wiping out groups in seconds. For bosses, you chain ED for single target, then spam
Bonestorm via weapon set 2 (physical), while
Contagion and ED stay bound to weapon set 1 (chaos).
This build is designed to level any caster, but particularly shines as a pre-build for a Lich. Blood Mage is equally viable, and Infernalist represents the fastest route to rush the campaign thanks to Demonic Form. The experience remains smooth from act 1 thanks to
Enfeeble as a starting gem, then
Contagion +
Essence Drain from level 3.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Best league starter caster 0.5 according to the author — proven combo reinforced by the additions of patch 0.4 (
Bonestorm,
Entangle, Weapon Sets) - Exceptional Clear speed:
Contagion automatically spreads the DoT to the entire pack upon the death of the first enemy - Solid single target on bosses thanks to the ED →
Bonestorm spam chain on weapon set 2 - Simple combo to play: 2 main buttons (
Contagion +
Essence Drain) are enough throughout the entire campaign - Versatile in ascendancy: compatible with Lich (recommended), Blood Mage and Infernalist without reworking the build
- Very little gear required to start — a +1 chaos wand is enough to rush through the first acts
❌ Weaknesses
- Mental load with weapon swap: you need to alternate Set 1 (chaos) and Set 2 (physical) depending on pack or boss context
- Brutality I blocks elemental damage on
Bonestorm — incompatible if the staff deals bonus elemental damage - Corrosion requires Dexterity early on, which is not native to the Witch
- Pure DoT build — little instant kill on scripted boss phases that change quickly

The author insists: vendor check at each act is mandatory, as the wand remains the main damage source of the build throughout the entire campaign. Here is the priority order of stats to aim for each slot:
- Wand (main weapon): +1 to all Spell Skills > +1 to all Chaos Skills > Spell Damage %. This is the most important slot — check the vendor at each level threshold.
- Staff (alternative): aim for high Spell Damage % even without additional levels — can be superior to a basic wand depending on available rolls
- Focus (off-hand): same priorities as the wand — +1 spell skills and spell damage
- Body Armor: focus on energy shield (Energy Shield) for survivability
- Boots: Movement Speed as absolute priority (no surprise for a caster)
- Helmet, Gloves, Belt: basic items, equip what you get — resistances and life
- Weapon Sets: if you don’t have a second weapon set, do a lock right-click on the weapon set icon so they use the same weapon
Gameplay Tips
- Pack rotation :
Contagion on the group →
Essence Drain on the first target → the death of that target spreads the DoT to the whole pack - Boss rotation :
Essence Drain to apply the DoT, then spam Bonestorm in weapon set 2 until death - Weapon Set 1 (chaos) :
Contagion +
Essence Drain + chaos supports - Weapon Set 2 (physical) :
Bonestorm +
Enfeeble + critical passives (Cut to the Bone, Jack Shards) - Weapon set lock : right-click on the icon if you only have one weapon — avoids swap bugs
- Orb of Storms placed on the ground : generates
Living Lightning minions that hit enemies and proc Impale bonuses to boost
Bonestorm - First spirit gem : Ravenous Swarm with
Corrosion as support (-armor) to amplify the physical damage of
Bonestorm - First support on Contagion : Unleash (best in slot) to cast multiple
Contagion per cast - Brutality I on Bonestorm : OK initially to 1-shot the first boss, but remove later if your staff has bonus elemental damage
Essence Drain + Contagion Combo: the spread mechanic
The core of the build relies on a simple but devastating interaction.
Contagion is an area spell that applies a chaos DoT to all enemies hit — but its true strength comes from the spread on death: when a monster affected by
Contagion dies, the DoT transfers to all adjacent enemies within an area of effect.
Essence Drain, on the other hand, is a chaos projectile that inflicts a massive and long-lasting DoT on a single target. The synergy is crystal clear: you cast
Contagion on the pack to set the stage, then shoot
Essence Drain at the weakest target. The target dies quickly thanks to the stacked ED DoT, and the
Contagion spread does the rest — the entire pack falls in cascade without you having to lift a finger.
This mechanic explains why the build is so performant in clear speed from act 1: with only two spells, you wipe out entire screens of monsters. For lone bosses (without packs to exploit),
Bonestorm in weapon set 2 takes over after the initial application of
Essence Drain.
Weapon Sets Configuration: chaos + physical
Since patch 0.4, Weapon Sets have become a pillar of PoE2 gameplay. You obtain your first weapon set points around level 11, which allows you to branch the passive tree into two independent configurations. The ED+
Contagion build benefits enormously from this:
- Weapon Set 1 (chaos passives): allocated exclusively to Contagion and Essence Drain. Take all available chaos damage nodes (up to the « Dark Entries » area for advanced levels)
- Weapon Set 2 (physical passives + crit): allocated to Bonestorm and Enfeeble. Take the crit nodes (Cut to the Bone, Jack Shards) to boost critical strikes from physical spells
During gameplay, the swap is instant (default key X): Set 1 to clear packs, Set 2 as soon as a boss appears. If you only have one wand, right-click on the weapon set icon in the inventory to lock both sets with the same weapon — this avoids swap bugs and keeps gameplay smooth.
First Spirit Gem: Ravenous Swarm + Corrosion
The choice of the first spirit gem is crucial to get through tough bosses as early as act 2. The author tests three options early in the campaign:
- Wither : applies the
Wither debuff to nearby enemies — solid but generic - Withering Presence : passive
Wither aura — comfort without intervention - Ravenous Swarm (recommended): summons insect swarms that poison enemies with a high damage multiplier
Why
Ravenous Swarm? Because it can be paired with
Corrosion as a support gem, which adds an armor break effect equal to 80% of poison damage applied. This synergy massively reduces boss armor, which amplifies all your physical damage (and therefore
Bonestorm). Note:
Corrosion requires Dexterity, which is not native to the Witch — you will need to invest a few Dex nodes on the passive tree to use it early.
Ascendancy Choice: Lich, Blood Mage or Infernalist?
The build is designed around the Lich, but remains fully viable on the two other Witch ascendancies. Here is how Ronald ranks them:
- Lich (recommended): take Solace Form first, then Eternal Life to massively boost survivability. If focused on chaos, chain with Rupture, Necromantic Conduit, or The Soul. This is the most defensive and stable choice
- Blood Mage: just as solid, simpler to play. No skill adjustment needed — the build works as is
- Infernalist (rush leveling): the fastest way to rush the campaign. Take Demonic Possession to access Demon Form and gain a massive spell damage multiplier. No need to grab Master of the Darkness — Demonic Possession alone is enough for speed leveling
If the goal is to quickly farm the campaign to switch to another build afterward, take Infernalist. If you plan to keep this build in endgame, stick with Lich or Blood Mage.
Endgame Combo: Orb of Storms + Living Lightning + Bonestorm
At higher levels, a third element completes the combo:
Orb of Storms supported by
Living Lightning. The principle is technical but devastating:
- You place Orb of Storms on the ground near the boss
- The orb automatically strikes enemies with lightning
- Each hit summons a Living Lightning minion (up to 2 supports to cap at max)
- The
Living Lightning minions proc Impales and trigger your
Bonestorm bonuses - You spam
Bonestorm normally — each cast now benefits from the minion procs
This mechanic is not mandatory —
Bonestorm alone already deals enough damage for most content. But if you feel a lack of single target on endgame map bosses or endgame invitations, this is the optimization layer that will make the difference. Note that to push ED+Contagion in endgame maps, you can absolutely drop
Bonestorm if your clear is already satisfactory —
Dark Effigy totems combined with chaos damage are usually enough.
