Build Overview
DEADRABB1T’s ED
Contagion Lich is one of the most reliable league starters in Path of Exile 2, and it’s back in full force for Season 0.5. This chaos DoT Witch build revolves around the iconic
Essence Drain +
Contagion combo: apply
Essence Drain to a target, then
Contagion spreads the chaos damage to the entire pack when the infected enemy dies. The result is smooth, satisfying map clear that requires very little setup — ideal for starting a new league.
The greatest strength of this build is its continuity: you use virtually the same skills from the very beginning of the campaign all the way through Endgame.
Essence Drain and
Contagion are already your primary clear tool during the campaign, with
Essence Drain also serving as single-target until you pick up
Bonestorm at the end of Act 1, then
Dark Effigy at the start of Act 3 — which becomes your true single-target damage source in Endgame. The Lich ascendancy completes the package perfectly by providing exceptional toughness nodes.
In Endgame, the build comes in two variants: a Full Life variant for early Endgame players, and a more advanced Low Life variant that unlocks a massive damage boost via Execute (30% more damage permanently against low-life targets) and improved quality of life. With a very high Energy Shield pool (10,000+ easily achievable) and the Lich’s intrinsic damage reduction, this build remains extremely resilient even after the Energy Shield nerfs in 0.5. Worth noting: no Lineage support gems or unique jewels are required — the entire setup shown is designed for day one of the league.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Exceptional league starter: one of the best league-start options, especially among spellcasters.
- Smooth leveling: one of the simplest and most enjoyable campaign experiences in the game.
- Skill continuity: the same core gameplay from Level 1 all the way through Endgame.
- Very tanky: massive Energy Shield (10,000+) + 25% intrinsic damage reduction from Lich.
- Minimal budget: no Lineage gems or unique jewels required to function.
- Satisfying clear: the chaos spread from
Essence Drain +
Contagion melts packs effortlessly.
❌ Weaknesses
- Vulnerable to 0.5 Energy Shield nerfs: the recharge delay is longer than in 0.4 (≈ 3.6 s).
- Low Life management: the optimized variant requires managing the « low life trick » after each death.
- Progressive single-target damage: tough bosses require properly stacking DoT and Withered before bursting.

The build is intentionally budget-friendly and accessible as a League starter. The main goal on each piece is to stack as much Energy Shield and defensive layers as possible:
- Helmet (cornerstone): Atziris Disdain — the unique that defines the build. It makes your Energy Shield based on your life and causes a portion of damage taken to pass through Energy Shield, which is equivalent to damage reduction. Hover over it in the equipment grid below for details.
- Weapon (sceptre / wand): +5 levels to chaos skill gems, spell damage, and Cast speed. The level bonus only benefits
Dark Effigy. - Focus: look for a desecrated « +1 totem » modifier that lets you place three
Dark Effigy instead of two. - Rings: Cast speed on both, plus resistances and Energy Shield.
- Amulet: Cast speed, levels to all skill gems (« all spells »), and Energy Shield.
- Gloves & boots: high Energy Shield everywhere, with movement speed on the boots.
- Belt: Ingenuity on the optimized build — this unique grants charm slots and amplifies the bonuses from your rings. Early on, a rare belt with maximum life, mana, and resistances works perfectly fine.
Gameplay Tips
- Clear combo: apply
Essence Drain then
Contagion; the death of the infected target spreads chaos damage to the entire pack. - Single target: on bosses, first build up Withered stacks with
Chaos Bolt, then place
Dark Effigy,
Essence Drain and
Despair for maximum damage. - Triple Dark Effigy: with the +1 totem focus and Overabundance, you can place three effigies — your main source of single-target damage.
- Low life trick: you only need to redo it when you die or lose all your Energy Shield (lock your life below 35%), not every time you log in.
- Survivability: keep
notable Convalescence active at all times to recover your Energy Shield, and rely on the Lich’s damage reduction. - When to go Low Life: wait until you have around 8,000 Energy Shield before switching to the Low Life version, to stay tanky.
The Essence Drain + Contagion combo in detail
The core of the build relies on the interaction between two chaos spells.
Essence Drain is a projectile that deals heavy chaos DoT to a single target.
Contagion is an area spell that also applies a chaos DoT — but its true strength is that when an enemy affected by
Contagion dies, the effect spreads to nearby enemies. By combining the two, you cast
Essence Drain on a target already covered by
Contagion: the target dies,
Contagion spreads, and
Essence Drain chain-jumps across the entire pack. This is what gives the build its signature « screen melts » clear speed with minimal investment.
In Endgame, the setup gains additional supports such as
Unleash (extra casts), Magnified Area (larger area) and
Chaotic Freeze for crowd control, while keeping the same spread logic.
Despair amplifies the chaos damage enemies take, which multiplies the output of all your spells.
The Low Life version: why and how
Once you have a comfortable Energy Shield pool (around 8,000), you can switch to the more powerful Low Life variant. The idea is to lock your life below 35% to benefit from several mechanics: the Execute support grants 30% more damage while you are at Low Life (permanently), plus an additional 30% against enemies that are themselves below 35% life. This is one of the main reasons to adopt this version.
Low Life also unlocks comfort bonuses such as Final Barrage (increased Cast speed at Low Life) and a movement speed gain through Techrod’s Gaze. Good to know: the low life trick only needs to be redone if you die or lose your entire Energy Shield — not on every login. The Full Life version remains perfectly viable for players who are just starting Endgame and don’t want to manage this mechanic yet.
Lich tankiness against the 0.5 nerfs
Season 0.5 introduces several nerfs to Energy Shield, primarily to the recharge delay and speed (a delay of around 3.6 seconds compared to sometimes 1 to 1.5 seconds in 0.4). A few nodes were also removed or reduced (Patient Barrier lowered, the Calibration notable removed). Despite this, the build remains extremely solid: the total amount of Energy Shield available on the tree is broadly preserved (Melding, Insightfulness, Heavy Buffer, Enhanced Barrier), and reaching 10,000+ Energy Shield is still very easy.
Most importantly, the Lich ascendancy shines especially in the face of these nerfs: thanks to Eternal Life, Soulless Form, Atziris Disdain and Heavy Buffer, the Lich stacks roughly 25% damage reduction. Combined with
notable Convalescence for fast Energy Shield recovery, the build tankes hits without issue, even at the start of a league.
Progression: from campaign to endgame
The great advantage of this build is that it plays the same way from start to finish. As early as Act 1, your duo
Essence Drain +
Contagion serves as your main clear tool, with
Essence Drain also handling single-target damage. At the end of Act 1, you unlock
Bonestorm to strengthen single-target, then
Dark Effigy at the start of Act 3 becomes your true source of boss damage.
In endgame, clear remains built around
Essence Drain and
Contagion, while
Dark Effigy (tripled thanks to the +1 totem focus) takes over single-target duty. You will reach the build’s full potential around Level 80-84, with « medium » gear accessible within a few days of the league — no mandatory chase item required.
