At 7:13 p.m., the WoW Forever stress test was thirteen minutes old, and the MeinMMO editors were still staring at the same screen: a realm list where no realm type was available. At 7:55 p.m., they logged in with no queue. At 8:15 p.m., they were running at around 100 frames per second in a packed starting zone. In between, forty minutes were enough to change the story of the evening. Here is what the sources establish about the WoW Forever stress test of October 21, and what they leave open before the game launches. (All times are Paris time.)
What Blizzard wanted to measure
This WoW Forever stress test was open to any World of Warcraft account, no subscription needed. It launched from Battle.net, in the game version selector, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Paris time, according to Kaivax’s post on the European forum. All characters and names created during the test are deleted at the end.
Phil Ulrich explains on Blizzard Watch what the test targets: a « realmless » server system, where every player in a region who shares the same ruleset (the game type: normal, PvP or roleplaying) lands on a single server. He calls the model « pretty rough on the server hardware. » The WoW Forever stress test is there to see how that architecture handles a surge of simultaneous logins.

A first hour stuck on the ruleset choice
The « Play » button became clickable at 6:40 p.m., a mini-update landed in the launcher at 6:46 p.m., and the intro cinematic loaded at 6:50 p.m. The realm screen appeared, but MeinMMO’s ticker notes that no realm type was available. At 7:02 p.m., a very short queue ended on the same error. At 7:05 p.m., a new error message appeared on the next launch. At 7:18 p.m., nothing had moved.
On the European forum, stress test players describe the same dead end. One participant writes « no ruleset is available, » another « rulesets unavailable, so a stop to the stress test kinda, » a third sees « This game cannot be played yet » with the button grayed out. A more ironic message, on the official announcement thread: « We stress-tested it. Test failed. »

Jacqueline Brosch of PC Games Hardware published her report at 8:05 p.m. She describes dropped connections, players stopped at the login screen and grayed-out game modes. A notice in the Battle.net launcher said Blizzard was still working on « final technical difficulties » (translated from German). The cause is not confirmed, nor is any link to the number of players. PCGH also had to download about 14 GB more despite an already installed client.
After 7:55 p.m., a game that holds up
At 7:55 p.m., MeinMMO logs in normally, with no queue, and creates a human Warlock. At 8:03 p.m., the starting zone is packed: players fight over monsters and line up at the quest NPCs. At 8:15 p.m., the editors measure around 100 frames per second, with no stutter or lag.
At 9:45 p.m., the developers announce in the game chat that they will deliberately crash some background services. That is the real resilience test: break one part to see whether the rest follows. The 10 p.m. ticker entry says everything works, with enemies occasionally despawning mid-fight. Its last entry, at 11:22 p.m., describes a test running « predominantly well, » with a few players still unable to select a realm. According to MeinMMO, Blizzard had also warned beforehand that there would be no roleplaying realm.
That ticker stops at 11:22 p.m., and the test was due to run until 3 a.m. We found no source covering the end of the night, and no Blizzard message explaining the early-evening error.
What the WoW Forever stress test says about November 4
The test showed two distinct things. Once in, the game held up through an evening of load and the deliberate service crash. The ruleset selection screen, on the other hand, blocked players for nearly an hour, and some were still stuck there at 11:22 p.m. If the same bottleneck returns at launch, the first minutes will be the painful part, not the game itself.
One caveat applies to the comparison: no source gives the number of players connected during the test. There is no way to say whether the October 21 load resembled launch day’s, which Blizzard Watch and MMORPG.com date to November 4. MeinMMO writes that the game opens on November 5 at midnight Paris time, which is the same night.
To prepare for launch night, the survival guide to rushing level 60 and the article on the end of the beta cover the preparation side.
Two dates matter between now and then. The beta closes for good on Friday, October 23 at 10 a.m. Pacific time, which is 7 p.m. in Paris, as Kaivax specifies. Name reservation starts on October 27, at 6 p.m. in Germany according to MeinMMO, with a paid Forever package required and three names per account.
