ENDGAME | PIT PUSH | SPEED FARM BARBARIAN
Build Overview
This Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian build guide covers Season 12 in full detail. Welcome to the
Hammer of the Ancients (HotA) Barbarian build for Season 12! This iconic franchise skill maintains its position as the best core skill available, particularly for taking down Bosses including the new Butchers.
Hammer of the Ancients is built around a simple principle: crush everything in your path by detonating
Aspect of Earthquakes while stacking as much Fury as possible to fuel the
Furious Hammer of the Ancients upgrade. This upgrade converts your Fury into a massive critical damage multiplier with a 100% critical hit chance.
HotA's naturally limited area of effect is compensated by the
Aspect of Ancestral Force and the power of the
Mantle of Mountain's Fury, which significantly extend your range. Managing the
Aspect of Earthquakes is essential: you must detonate at least one every 5 seconds to maintain the unique chest's powerful damage multiplier.
In late progression, the build leverages the "Selig Low Life" combo, which remains the most powerful configuration of the season. By maximizing your Fury pool while keeping your life points at minimum, the damage redirected by the
Melted Heart of Selig becomes negligible, allowing you to completely ignore survivability.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Among the highest single-target damage in the game, ideal for Bosses and Butchers
- Smooth progression from Starter to Mythic thanks to several well-defined gear checkpoints
- The Selig Low Life combo offers unmatched raw power with paradoxically high survivability
- The
Rend Arsenal system makes rotation nearly automatic with
Walking Arsenal and
100,000 Steps
Weaknesses
- Limited area of effect without the right aspects and uniques, requiring gear investment
- Managing
Aspect of Earthquakes every 5 seconds requires some attention in early build stages - Moderate movement speed compared to fast farming builds
Recommended Equipment
Table de Loot
Helmet
In early progression, a
Runic Skullcap with the
Aspect of Disobedience provides a solid defensive layer. Once you reach Ancestral, the
Tuskhelm of Joritz the Mighty directly amplifies your
Hammer of the Ancients damage. In the Mythic configuration, the
Crown of Lucion takes over for even superior damage scaling.
Chest
The
Mantle of Mountain's Fury is the centerpiece of the build once you reach the Ancestral tier. Its implicit affix tied to
Aspect of Earthquakes grants you a permanent damage multiplier as long as you maintain the detonation rhythm every 5 seconds. No viable alternative at this stage.
Weapons
The two-handed mace (
Bonebreaker) is your main weapon for HotA, fully benefiting from Expertise bonuses and passives like
Wallop and
Heavy Handed. The two-handed sword (
Demonblade) carries the
Aspect of Earthquakes for automatic generation. In dual wield, the
Sabre of Tsasgal and
Ramaladni's Magnum Opus form a formidable duo: the first offers massive damage multipliers, the second raises your Fury cap.
Gloves and Pants
The gloves carry the
Aspect of Inner Calm (or
Aspect of Limitless Rage in Starter) to amplify damage while stationary.
Tibault's Will arrives at Ancestral and boosts your damage after every mobility action. In the Speed variant,
Chainscourged Mail replaces the pants for more fluidity.
Boots
The
100,000 Steps are essential from the Ancestral tier. They automatically trigger
Ground Stomp via
Walking Arsenal, generating
Aspect of Earthquakes without any manual action. This is the cog that makes
Rend the build nearly automatic.
Jewelry
The
Battle Trance amulet amplifies
Frenzy and reinforces the buff cycle. In Mythic, the
Melted Heart of Selig replaces the amulet to activate the Low Life combo — incoming damage is absorbed by Fury instead of life. The
Ring of Starless Skies (Mythic) reduces your skill costs, while the
Soulwatch Hoop handles Fury management and buffs through the
Aspect of Anger Management.
Build Variants
Starter
If you are just reaching Torment 1, this variant combines
Aspect of Earthquakes damage (via the Runeword
Moni+
Tec) with
Hammer of the Ancients. The rotation alternates
Lunging Strike and HotA at a 1:1 ratio, with
Leap as a mobility tool. Prioritize Maximum Life, Armor, and individual Resistances first.
Ancestral
Once you obtain the
Mantle of Mountain's Fury, the
100,000 Steps, and the
Sabre of Tsasgal, switch to this variant. It introduces
Walking Arsenal with
Frenzy and
Mighty Throw as support skills. The
Tuskhelm of Joritz the Mighty and
Tibault's Will complete the power ramp.
Mythic
The reference configuration. The
Melted Heart of Selig activates the Low Life combo: incoming damage drains Fury instead of life, and since your life stays low, the redirected damage portion is minimal. The
Ring of Starless Skies reduces resource costs, and the
Crown of Lucion maximizes damage.
Push
Optimized for the Pit and the Tower, this variant keeps the same Mythic core with defensive adjustments to push the highest tier levels. Regular Overpowers provided by the
Xan rune become critical at this stage.
Speed
For fast farming, the
Godslayer Crown replaces the
Crown of Lucion and
Chainscourged Mail replaces
Tibault's Will for more mobility. The rest of the build remains identical to the Mythic variant.
Gameplay Tips
Walking Arsenal may seem complex at first glance, but in practice the build is very straightforward.
Frenzy and
Mighty Throw function as support shouts that you activate at full stacks every 15 seconds.
Buff Rotation (every ~15 seconds)
Press
Frenzy once (Dual Wield buff from
Walking Arsenal). You do not need to hit an enemy — cast the skill in the air using the "hold position" button.
Main Rotation
Activate
Call of the Ancients whenever available to massively generate Fury and benefit from its numerous buffs. Use
Ground Stomp when available to pull monsters together. Cast
War Cry for the massive damage boost and
Mighty Throw as an attack speed steroid (Two-Handed Sword buff from
Walking Arsenal). Then spam
Hammer of the Ancients from a safe distance toward your enemies (Two-Handed Mace buff from
Walking Arsenal).
Arsenal System
Assign the Two-Handed Mace to
Hammer of the Ancients, Dual Wield to
Frenzy, and the Two-Handed Sword to
Mighty Throw manually. For the Technique slot, choose Polearm Expertise () which grants x15% bonus damage while you remain healthy and a x15% Lucky Hit Chance multiplier.
Season 12 Seasonal Theme — Kill Streaks and Bloodied Items
Season 12 "Massacre" introduces kill streaks and Bloodied Items. Chain kills to accumulate tier bonuses: Streak (0-99), Carnage (100-249),
Devastation (250-499), Bloodbath (500-999), Massacre (1000-9000), Fresh Meat! (9001+). For Bloodied affixes, prioritize Pillage (Movement Speed, Main Stat, Attack Speed), Feast (Berserk preferred), and Famine (Experience gained).
Arbre des Talents
Mercenaire
Paragon and Glyphs
The Paragon system is essential to maximize the potential of the HotA build. The boards are chosen to amplify critical damage, maximum Fury, and bonuses tied to core skills. Glyphs are strategically positioned to cover the maximum number of beneficial nodes within their radius.
Prioritize offensive glyphs like
Exploit and
Wrath which directly boost your
Hammer of the Ancients damage. The legendary nodes on each board offer unique multipliers — select those that reinforce critical damage, core damage, or core skill damage first.
Selig Low Life Combo Management
The "Selig Low Life" combo is the heart of the build in the Mythic and Push configuration. The principle: the
Melted Heart of Selig redirects incoming damage from your life to your Fury. The higher your Fury reserve (thanks to the
Ramaladni's Magnum Opus), the more you can absorb without losing life. The
Ring of Starless Skies progressively reduces your skill costs, allowing you to maintain a consistently high Fury pool.
The trick is to keep your life points as low as possible. When your life is low, the portion of damage redirected by
Melted Heart of Selig is minimal, since it is calculated as a percentage of your current life. In practice, you become nearly invulnerable as long as your Fury reserve remains sufficient to absorb incoming damage.
Earthquake Loop
The
Aspect of Earthquakes loop is the mechanism that ties all the build pieces together. The
Mantle of Mountain's Fury requires an Earthquake to be detonated at least every 5 seconds to maintain its damage multiplier. Thanks to the
100,000 Steps and
Walking Arsenal,
Ground Stomp is triggered automatically, generating
Aspect of Earthquakes without any manual intervention.
This automatic loop is reinforced by the
Aspect of Earthquakes on your two-handed sword, which adds an additional generation source. The result: a constant stream of area damage that complements the direct strikes of
Hammer of the Ancients, delivering an optimal blend of single-target and area damage.
