You had to pet a cow: the Diablo 4 cow armor is finally complete

Behind the cathedral of Old Tristram, a cow is grazing. Click on it to pet it and it drops the Foreshanks of the Bovine, the only piece of the Diablo 4 cow armor nobody had found. It arrived with patch 3.2.3 on October 14. The patch notes don't say a word about it.

The set has five pieces, and they come from five different places: a random rift, two hidden bosses, a fishing island and this cow. Order matters: the quest that leads to Moophisto only resets once a week, and getting the sequence wrong costs you seven days.

A cow slipped in silently by patch 3.2.3

On September 24, Icy Veins listed every bovine cosmetic in Season 15. Four armor pieces had a known source. For the Foreshanks, the entry read "Unknown". Secret hunters kept looking for three weeks, until the October 14 patch.

The very next day, Miril posted the answer on Icy Veins: "After patch 3.2.3 went live, a Cow now spawns in Old Tristram behind the Cathedral." All you need to do is pet it.

GamesRadar picked up the story on October 16 with a subtitle that sums it up: "All you have to do is pet the cow." Our article on patch 3.2.3 and the stuck seasonal quest didn't mention it either, since Blizzard never wrote it down anywhere.

The five pieces of the Diablo 4 cow armor

Here is where each piece of the Diablo 4 cow armor drops, with the names used by the English client.

Moophisto also gives two rewards outside the armor. The Figment of Imoogination mount trophy drops the first time you kill him, no roll involved. The Marquis Milky pet is only a chance drop. We covered how the boss was found in the test server files in our Moophisto article.

Unlocking Old Tristram: Deckard's ten journals

The cow, the Butcher and the two hidden achievements are all in Old Tristram, the village from the first Diablo. Without it, two pieces of the Diablo 4 cow armor stay out of reach: the Foreshanks, and the Brisket if you skip the Cow Level. To get in, you need to pick up ten of Deckard Cain's journals scattered across Sanctuary. Reddit user u/JT99-FirstBallot found the way in first, according to Icy Veins on September 17.

Deckard Cain's storyline in Tarsarak has to start first, otherwise the satchels never appear. Each one looks like an open satchel holding a scroll, and a marker shows on the minimap when you get close. The order doesn't matter. Here are the ten locations listed by Argie Maputi for GamesFuze:

1. Gea Kul (Kehjistan): near the docks, southwest of the waypoint.
2. Imperial Library in Caldeum: a few meters southeast of the waypoint.
3. Kehjistan desert: north of the entrance to Andariel's Lair, on a ridge.
4. Wejinhani (Hawezar): right, then a little north of the waypoint.
5. Lorath's cabin (Fractured Peaks): inside, in the room on the right.
6. Dry Steppes: on the bridge in front of Guulrahn, southwest of the Hidden Overlook waypoint.
7. Marowen (Scosglen): west of the waypoint, on the docks.
8. Penitent Cairns (Scosglen): at the dungeon entrance, east of the Braestaig waypoint.
9. Fiefdom House: left of the Gallowvine dungeon entrance, west of the Under the Fat Goose Inn waypoint.
10. Mistral Woods: north of the Yelesna waypoint, after clearing the enemies around it.

The tenth journal triggers the Deckard's Journey quest. Go back to Deckard Cain at the Imperial Library: he opens a portal to Deckard's Memory, which leads to Old Tristram. Griswold, Ogden, Adria, Wirt and the rest of the 1996 village are waiting there. The same journals also count toward the Hellfire Torch, so one trip covers both.

The Butcher, the Prime Ribs and the Bovine Sanctuary

You can't fight Moophisto just anywhere. You have to enter the Bovine Sanctuary, and the altar only lets in a player carrying 5 Prime Ribs. At first, only the Cow King dropped them. Season 15 added a second source, described by Icy Veins on October 3.

In the north of Old Tristram, outside the cathedral, a Wounded Townsman asks you to slay the Butcher. He waits on the first map of The Labyrinth, the new capstone dungeon in Scosglen. He drops all 5 Prime Ribs at once.

With the ribs in your bags, teleport to Tyrael's Encampment in the Celestia zone of Skovos, then head east. The Altar of the Heifer takes you to the Sanctuary, home to Moophisto's summoning altar and a few cows.

Two hidden achievements on the way

Old Tristram offers two side quests, Ogden's Sign and The Butcher, each doable once per week per character. Before turning them in, ask every villager about Ogden's sign and the Butcher: Deckard Cain, Griswold, Ogden, Adria, Wirt, Farnham, Pepin and Gillian. Asking all of them unlocks two achievements, Sign Snooper and Butcher Loremaster, according to Icy Veins.

So ask every question before turning in the quests: once turned in, they only come back the following week.

The order to do it all in

To complete the Diablo 4 cow armor without wasting time, one constraint drives everything: the Butcher quest's weekly limit. It forces an order.

1. The ten journals first. They open Old Tristram and progress the Torch at the same time.
2. In Old Tristram, in a single visit: pet the cow for the Foreshanks, question the eight villagers, then take the Butcher quest.
3. The Butcher in The Labyrinth, then Moophisto with the 5 Prime Ribs. The mount trophy is guaranteed on the first kill.
4. The Cow Level for the Sirloin and the Hooves. If the Brisket didn't drop from Moophisto, the Cow King gives you more Prime Ribs without waiting a week.
5. The Head is the only piece you can't force. The Complete Nut comes from a random rift, so keep an eye on the world map the whole time.
