Control Resonant Ditches the Gun for the Blade

Control Resonant: Dylan Faden wielding two golden blades against a mould creature in Manhattan

Article by Kami

The gun is gone. In its place, two blades that change shape. Remedy releases Control Resonant on September 24, and the sequel to a third-person shooter has become a melee action game. This isn’t a balance tweak: it’s a genre change between two entries in the same series, a rare shift in the industry. Here’s what the journalists who played it are reporting.

Dylan Faden takes over

A Manhattan park covered in blue mold. That’s the image opening the series’ new chapter. Remedy Entertainment has set the date for Control Resonant at September 24, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. A Mac version will arrive later. The announcement came via the Remedy release, accompanied by a new narrative trailer and the opening of pre-orders.

Jesse Faden, the heroine of the first Control, has disappeared. Her brother Dylan takes her place. He has escaped confinement by the FBC (the Federal Bureau of Control, the secret agency that already framed the first game).

The setting is no longer the Bureau cut off from the outside world. This time, the action takes place in Manhattan, in a distorted version of the real city. The blue mold overrunning the park is just a visible symptom of a wider contamination.

The enemies come directly from this substance. The journalists present at the presentation fought a massive creature capable of firing mold mines, then a boss nicknamed « the Collective, » a giant mass bristling with tentacles.

What Control Resonant changes, controller in hand

The first Control relied on a service weapon that changed shape and on telekinetic powers. It was a third-person shooter, with cover and ranged combat. Control Resonant flips this foundation. The gun gives way to a pair of transforming blades, the Dual Blades. The game becomes a melee action game, and journalists see a direct kinship with Devil May Cry.

Control Resonant preview published by Game Informer from gamescom 2026
Game Informer, August 26, 2026, preview by Wesley LeBlanc from gamescom.

Controller in hand, this choice changes everything. No more cover to fall back behind, no more ranged fire as the backbone of combat. There is no parry and no block, only a dodge. Healing, meanwhile, comes from only one source: defeating enemies. The game therefore pushes you to stay in the fight, even at the cost of taking risks, since retreating never heals you.

This logic comes with role-playing elements, absent from the first Control. Wesley LeBlanc detailed these mechanics on August 26, 2026 in a preview for Game Informer, written from gamescom. The abilities shown during the demonstrations give a sense of the change:

  • Ignite
  • Barrage (rock projection)
  • Push (telekinetic repulsion)
  • a gravity shift
  • executions triggered by pressing the right stick

Another group of journalists spent about three hours with the game, on a development PlayStation 5, in PlayStation’s London offices. It was its first hands-on preview. At Summer Game Fest 2026, the demo lasted about an hour and covered the early story beats, combat, movement, and a boss fight. The previews published so far are positive.

Releasing the same day as Silent Hill, while changing genre

Remedy Entertainment sets Control Resonant for September 24, 2026. Silent Hill: Townfall launches the same day, in a neighboring genre, horror. Two anticipated releases, one single calendar slot.

This choice adds to an already packed month. Marvel’s Wolverine kicks things off on the 15th, as a PlayStation 5 exclusive with no open world. Tokyo Game Show runs from September 17 to 21. BlizzCon takes place on the 12th and 13th. To place each release within this sequence, the hour-by-hour September schedule remains the reference.

The real gamble of Control Resonant isn’t the date, but the genre. The first Control was a third-person shooter. Its sequel becomes a melee action game. Changing genre between two entries of the same series remains rare in the industry. Players used to the first installment must relearn their combat reflexes.

Press previews, including those from Game Informer and The Outer Haven, remain positive about this shift. A Mac version is already announced for after the initial release. One simple fact remains: on September 24, two anticipated games will launch the same day, each with its own gamble.
