Fable shows itself on 26 August at gamescom

Fable will be shown on 26 August at gamescom, in a demonstration of its combat system. Not hands-on: Playground Games plays, the audience watches. Gears of War: E-Day, meanwhile, will be playable.

A theatre demo, not a queue

Xbox brings 25 playable games and 140 stations to Cologne. Within that, Fable sits apart: a demo theatre presentation where the studio walks through a Hero’s journey, combining melee, ranged and magic. It happens in hall 7, booth A-0.6.1, and Xbox will stream the whole thing live.

Official Xbox announcement of its gamescom 2026 presence with Fable on the line-up

Showing without letting people play, six months before release, usually tells you something. The game holds up on a prepared sequence rather than on twenty minutes left to a stranger. That is information about the state of the demo build. Gears of War: E-Day ships earlier and lets you hold the controller; Fable shows itself.

Fifteen years after the last Fable

The last entry in the series was Fable: The Journey, released in 2012 by Lionhead Studios. This one is the first developed by Playground Games, the Forza Horizon studio, and the first mainline entry in fifteen years.

This is not a sequel. The game drops the trilogy’s timeline and characters to reinterpret the kingdom of Albion. It keeps what made its signature: moral choices, player freedom, British humour and the idea of Heroes. The story starts in the character’s childhood, when their abilities first appear, then a time jump carries it into adulthood. It all begins in the village of Briar Hill. There, a stranger turns the inhabitants to stone, the Hero’s grandmother among them.

On writing duties sits Anna Megill, previously on Control and Dishonored. A coherent pick for a series whose personality owed as much to its tone as to its mechanics.

The PlayStation 5 is on the list

Fable ships on 23 February 2027 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X|S. A Microsoft first-party title, made by a Microsoft studio, launching the same day on the rival console.

That shift is no longer an exception at Xbox, it is becoming the rule. A game sold to three audiences instead of one earns more, and the exclusivity argument no longer holds anyone. The series was born on the first Xbox in 2004, as a reason to buy the console.

The full week is laid out in our gamescom 2026 round-up. At the same show, CD Projekt unveils the first look at Songs of the Past. Konami brings a new Silent Hill: Townfall trailer. On the PlayStation side, the week had opened with a State of Play devoted to Phantom Blade Zero.
