Nodusfall: HoYoverse Ditches Anime for Dark Fantasy

Nodusfall: the fire colossus from HoYoverse's new game facing four warriors

Article by Kami

The studio that built its fortune on cel-shaded characters just announced a game that looks like a Souls title. Nodusfall was unveiled on August 25 at the gamescom Opening Night Live, and it’s the sharpest about-face we’ve seen from HoYoverse since Genshin Impact.

No anime, no announced gacha, no confirmed mobile release. Instead: a dark cooperative action-RPG, a different engine, and an official site already open for pre-registration.

Nodusfall: what HoYoverse showed on August 25

The player takes on the role of a Weaver. Divine authority has collapsed, and the target to bring down carries an in-house name: the Dreadnodus. The official tagline sums it up in five words: « Wield Divinity, Sever the Dreadnodus ».

The site is already up and running with its Features, Chronicles, News and Community sections, plus a pre-registration button. That’s more than most games show at their reveal. What’s missing, though: no date, no release window, no platform list. The announcement was the opening segment of the night, and we had published the full lineup a few days earlier.

Unreal Engine 5: the studio leaves Unity

It’s the detail with the heaviest consequences, and the least discussed. Nodusfall runs on Unreal Engine 5, while Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero all run on Unity.

Switching engines isn’t an aesthetic choice. It means rebuilding a toolchain, retraining teams, starting from scratch on rendering and physics. A studio only goes that far when it’s aiming for something its usual engine simply can’t do.

That something shows on screen: realistic rendering, gritty materials, volumetric lighting. A world away from the cel-shading that made the studio’s fortune.

Three players or four? The press can’t agree

An announcement without a detailed press kit tends to produce diverging accounts. On the size of the group, Video Games Chronicle describes co-op for up to three players, while GosuGamers describes a team of four characters. The official key art, for its part, shows four silhouettes.

Even the spelling of the name is unsettled. Game Informer and MMOBomb write it as « Nodusfall », one word, Video Games Chronicle splits it into « Nodus Fall », and the official logo stacks the two syllables across two lines, which doesn’t help anyone. The site’s domain settles it: nodusfall.hoyoverse.com, one word.

The comparisons, meanwhile, all circle around the same titles. Monster Hunter for hunting a colossus as a group, Elden Ring Nightreign for the co-op sessions, Dark Souls and Dragon’s Dogma II for the art direction. A vocabulary of references HoYoverse had never had to carry before.

What this shift says about the 2026 market

HoYoverse isn’t short on money. Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero are all still running, and the studio is one of the most profitable in the industry. So this isn’t a survival move.

It’s more of an admission that a catalog built entirely on the same recipe eventually hits a ceiling. The anime gacha audience is large but bounded, the cooperative action-RPG audience lives elsewhere, and nobody crosses from one to the other by accident.

What the announcement leaves wide open is this: can a studio that built its whole method around collecting characters design a game where you keep the same one for a hundred hours.

Two halves of the same landscape, one in colorful anime style, the other in realistic dark fantasy

What happens next hinges entirely on what the studio shows after the show floor. Gamescom delivered a trailer and a website, not a gameplay demonstration. This fall’s other announcements, from Fable’s combat demo to the already-dated releases in our calendar through December, move forward with dates. Nodusfall, for now, moves forward with a promise.
