Valheim 1.0 Ends Five Years of Early Access

Valheim 1.0: a viking warrior facing a frozen landscape under the northern lights

Article by Kami

Five years. That’s how long Valheim spent in early access before reaching its final version, on September 9. The release brings the game’s eighth and final biome, and finally opens the door to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Here’s what Valheim 1.0 changes, and why the most important detail isn’t the one you’d expect.

Five years of early access, and a date

Five years is a long time for early access. Valheim has been there since its launch, developed by Iron Gate and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. The viking survival game leaves it on September 9, 2026. The date was confirmed at the PC Gaming Show, on June 7, 2026.

On Valheim’s official website, the team detailed its schedule this summer, in a news post titled « Word from the devs: almost there… ». The developers wrote: « We’re currently gearing up for the 1.0 release in September, fixing some final bugs and getting everything ready for you to experience in just a few weeks ».

This release isn’t just a version number change. It adds a new biome to the base game, with new enemies, new weapons, new building pieces and new platforms. It lands in a busy September, whose hour-by-hour agenda we detailed.

Deep North, the eighth and last biome

Deep North is the main addition in Valheim 1.0. This eighth biome closes out the list of regions planned by the developers since the early access launch, five years ago.

Valheim is an open-world survival and building game set in a viking universe. Progression happens region by region: each biome raises the difficulty bar higher than the previous one, and provides the resources needed to face what comes next.

This progression follows a strict rule. To unlock a new region, the player must first defeat the boss guarding the previous one, then craft gear from the materials it dropped. The eight biomes thus form a chain: skipping a step means facing the next one without the right tools.

Deep North occupies the last spot in this chain. Completing this biome therefore isn’t just about adding one more map to explore. It closes out the game’s entire progression curve, from the first steps on the beach to the last frozen region.

Valheim arrives on PS5 and Switch 2, with crossplay

On September 9, 2026, Valheim reaches a milestone awaited since its early access launch. PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 welcome the game for the first time. Until that date, Valheim remained limited to PC and Xbox consoles.

This release comes with a quieter but equally important change. Crossplay (the ability to play together from different machines) becomes complete. These platforms now share the same worlds.

  • PC
  • Mac
  • Linux
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X and S
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch 2

For a cooperative survival game like Valheim, this detail matters more than the new biome’s content. The game is played solo or in co-op, on shared servers built up over time. A group of friends no longer needs to own the same machine to keep building in a shared world.

A base started on PC, completed from a Switch 2 or a PS5, stays the same world for the whole group. This shift doesn’t depend on any additional content. It rests on compatibility between systems, and changes the way you play more than any content update would. The release lands six days before Marvel’s Wolverine, the month’s other big release.
