Patch 0.5 Overview in 5 Minutes

Fubgun, a YouTube content creator specializing in Path of Exile 2, has compiled the 10 biggest changes in PoE2 patch 0.5. This PoE2 season 5 overview covers the key takeaways drawn directly from his video analysis, complete with annotated images and exact patch numbers.

Patch 0.5 brings a wave of major changes to the new season. Some affect entire classes, others reshuffle the meta for popular builds. Here is the PoE2 season 5 breakdown of the changes that actually matter.

Pathfinder Poison: A Complete Teardown

Pathfinder Poison was the most-played build during the first two weeks of season 4. Blood Mage eventually caught up, but Pathfinder’s initial dominance was undeniable. Many players ran it, and it was the league starter of choice for a number of influential streamers. Needless to say, the developers had been watching it for a while.

The nerfs start with two ascendancy nodes. Running Assault sees its movement speed penalty drop from 50% to 30%, which sounds like a buff at first glance, but actually means the speed bonus during skills is reduced. Movement speed during mapping takes a hit. Overwhelming Toxicity makes things worse: the poison duration reduction goes from 35% to 50%. Before even touching the skills, the build already loses a significant chunk of its effectiveness.

Poisonburst Arrow gets its own nerf outside of the ascendancy. The base duration at level 20 drops from 5 seconds to 3 seconds. Stacking Overwhelming Toxicity’s 50% reduction on top, the final effective duration is only 1.5 seconds, down from 3.3 seconds before. The build’s primary clear skill loses half of its poison duration. And that’s not all: poison magnitude also drops by 10%, meaning 10% less damage on every single poison application.

Toxic Growth takes a parallel nerf as well. The pod cap drops from 12 to 6, and the number of pods fired per activation is also reduced to 6. As a result, pods explode the moment you fire six new ones, preventing any buildup. The more arrows enchantment no longer scales with Toxic Growth either. What used to be an advantage in both leveling and endgame now becomes a constraint in both phases at the same time.

The Plaguefinger gloves add another significant damage loss. These unique gloves no longer allow you to inflict other elements alongside poison. In practice, chill and shock disappear from the kit. Shock provided at least 20% more damage, and even more with shock magnitude sources. Losing that synergy is a real step back on bosses.

Pathfinder Poison remains a viable build for PoE2 season 5, but it is clearly no longer the optimal league starter. The nerfs hit from too many angles at once (ascendancy, skills, gear) for it to hold its performance level. If you still want to play it, the build still functions. But for an efficient league start, you will need to look elsewhere.

Energy Shield: Recovery Slashed

PoE2 Energy Shield — recovery nerfed

Energy Shield recovery is massively reduced in patch 0.5. Every source is hit: gear, passive tree, runes — regeneration values drop by 50 to 66% across the board. Not a single line is spared.

Ghost Dance is also completely reworked. It now regenerates 2% of evasion per second for 4 seconds after taking a hit. With 40,000 evasion, that is roughly 800 ES per second — gradual recovery with no more instant return. The cooldown also increases from 6 to 10 seconds, further deepening reliance on this keystone.

Beyond Ghost Dance, Grinding Gear Games has effectively removed all sources of instant Energy Shield recovery. Instant ES is gone from the game. Fubgun considers it deserved: ES has been overtuned for a long time, and this rebalance was overdue.

Leech is also caught up in this cleanup, notably through the Sequin gloves which were one of the most popular methods for recovering ES. The next section covers this in detail.

Leech: The End of Instant Leech

PoE2 Leech — instant leech removed

Leech takes a massive hit in patch 0.5. All instant leech is removed from the game. Not part of it, not a few targeted sources: all of it.

Blood Mage takes the direct fallout from this. The ascendancy relied almost entirely on this mechanic to function. Without instant leech, the class’s survivability budget collapses.

Before this patch, an optimized build could theoretically leech up to 50,000 life per second. That was clearly too much. Now, the base cap is set to 20% of total life per second. By investing in notable nodes on the passive tree, you can reach up to 50% maximum. A radical change.

The iconic keystones are also revised. Fast Metabolism no longer provides instant leech. Vaal Pact also drops the instant component and now only grants Overleech, meaning the ability to continue leeching beyond maximum life.

The nerf applies to both life leech and mana leech. Unique items are not spared either: certain unique gloves that granted instant leech lose that effect as well.

The mechanic remains in the game, but in a far more controlled form. GGG considers it deserved, and it is hard to argue otherwise. To partially compensate on the survivability front, basic runes receive a notable boost.

Basic Runes: +50% on Key Values

PoE2 runes buffed 50 percent season 5

Basic runes receive a massive boost in patch 0.5. We are talking about the standard greater runes: Greater Glacier Rune, Greater Mind Rune, and the vast majority of greater runes in the game. Virtually all of them have been improved by more than 40 to 50% on their main values.

The clearest example: the maximum life rune goes from 40 to 60 maximum life, exactly +50%. The same ratio applies to virtually all the others: more life on kill, more mana, and even resistances and attributes have been bumped up.

Rune (stat)Before patch 0.5After patch 0.5Change
Maximum Life4060+50 %
Resistance (generic)14 %18 %+28 %
Attributes1012+20 %
ES Recoverybuffed beforenerféeexception

The only exception to this wave of buffs concerns Energy Shield recovery runes, which were nerfed. GGG clearly wanted to rein in that mechanic, considered too strong under the new patch system. Everything else is going up.

In practice, this genuinely changes the feel during leveling and early game. Basic runes used to be nothing more than filler options while waiting for something better. With these numbers, they become legitimate choices for solidifying a character from the very first hours.

Worth noting: patch 0.5 also introduces more than 100 new runes into the game in total. The patch notes do not detail all of them, so the new entries will have to be discovered once the patch goes live. On the meta side, some runes could entirely redefine builds, as illustrated by our Olroth’s Legacy analysis.

Vaal and Sanctifying Orbs: A New Logic

PoE2 Vaal and Sanctifying Orbs season 5

The Vaal Orb and the Sanctifying Orb underwent a major change in patch 0.5. Previously, these two orbs pre-defined the item’s stats before applying their effect. In practice, they would divine the item behind the scenes, resetting all rolls to their maximum values, then modify the affixes. The item’s starting roll was therefore irrelevant.

That is no longer the case. Now, the item’s initial roll matters fully. The Vaal Orb and Sanctifying Orb simply increase or decrease values starting from that base roll, without pre-divining anything.

The clearest example is the Widowhail. If you are targeting a 300% Widowhail, you now need to start with an already well-rolled copy, around 240 to 245%, before using a Vaal Orb. With a poorly rolled Widowhail, the chance of hitting 300% becomes nearly zero.

The practical takeaway is clear: you need to divine your valuable uniques before Vaaling them. The order of operations becomes critical. Using a Vaal Orb on an un-divined item means exposing yourself to a disappointing result with no recourse. The same logic applies to the Sanctifying Orb.

Currencies: Rarities Adjusted, Omen and Recombinator Removed

PoE2 currencies season 5 Omen Recombinator removed

This patch brings several notable changes to currencies. Greater Imperfect Currency becomes rarer across the board, and Perfect Transmutation Orbs as well as Perfect Augmentation Orbs move another tier up in rarity. In other words, high-end crafting currencies are going to be harder to come by.

Conversely, the Divine Orb becomes more accessible this season. That is probably no coincidence: with the new unique system, it can be wise to divine an item before applying Vaal Orbs to it, and the developers apparently wanted to make that step easier.

On the removal side, Omen of Corruption is simply removed from the game, as is the Recombinator. Both items disappear completely from Path of Exile 2.

In return, a new rune appears and brings a long-awaited mechanic: the resistance swap. In practice, it allows you to convert one resistance type into another on a piece of gear — for example turning fire resistance into cold resistance. Veterans of PoE1 will recognize the principle inherited from Harvest. Practically speaking, this considerably simplifies resistance management when trading: if you are missing just one resistance type to cap your character, you no longer need to hunt for the perfect piece of gear — you can adapt what you already have.

Gem Levels on Martial Weapons: -2 Levels

PoE2 martial weapons gems -2 levels

Patch 0.5 brings a significant reduction to gem level bonuses on martial weapons. All martial weapons lose levels, with a stronger impact on two-handed weapons.

Weapon typeBefore (patch 0.4)After (patch 0.5)Loss
Martial two-handed weapons (2H)+7 levels max+5 levels max-2 levels
Martial one-handed weapons (1H)+5 levels max+4 levels max-1 level

Perfect Battle Essence (1H)previous value-1 level vs avant-1 level
Vaal Mask (spell skill levels)higher bonus+4 all spell skill levelsNerf
Spells (spell skill levels)UnchangedUnchanged0

This nerf affects only martial weapons. Spell skill level bonuses remain exactly the same as in the previous patch: no adjustment on that side. If you are playing a caster build with wand or sceptre type weapons, these changes do not affect you.

Warrior: Shield Wall Loses 40% Damage

Warrior PoE2 Shield Wall nerf -40 percent damage

The Warrior takes a significant nerf in patch 0.5. The Shield Wall build, by far the most popular of the class, loses roughly 40% of its damage according to content creator Kin’s estimates. It was THE Warrior build everyone was running, and this cut will clearly reshuffle the deck on the martial tank side.

For those who still want to try it despite the nerf, we have published a full Warrior Shield Wall leveling guide for season 0.5 that details the adjustments to make.

Wyvern Druid: Rend, Oil Barrage and Flame Breath Nerfed

Druid PoE2 Wyvern nerf Flame Breath Oil Barrage

The Druid in Wyvern form also takes some hits in patch 0.5. Fubgun briefly mentions three affected skills: Rend, Oil Barrage and Flame Breath. All three see their damage revised downward.

The build remains perfectly playable according to him, but if you were planning to abuse any of these skills, expect to feel the difference. Nothing game-breaking, just a recalibration. For a deeper dive, check out the Druid Wyvern Rend / Oil Barrage build by GuyThatDies, which remains one of the best references for this leveling strategy.

Gathering Storm: End of the One-Shot, Buff for Standard Use

Gathering Storm PoE2 Bell combo

The one-shot build around Cortis and Gathering Storm takes a hit, but the skill itself comes out ahead for standard use. Gathering Storm is buffed and now synergizes directly with the Bell skill, opening the door to new synergies for Druids who are not chasing instant burst.

As for the Druid’s other forms, Werewolf Form gets a slight nerf, while Bear Form comes through almost unchanged. Only a support gem and some Rage losses are worth noting. With these adjustments, the map of notable nerfs in patch 0.5 is now complete. Time to look at the builds that are still holding up.

PoE2 Season 5 Builds Still Viable After Patch 0.5

PoE2 builds still viable season 5

Before wrapping up, Fubgun does a quick rundown of season 0.4 builds that remain perfectly viable for league start, either because they were not touched, or because the nerfs they received are negligible.

  • Grenades: no changes. The build carries over exactly as before. GuyThatDies’ Mercenary Grenades Gemling Legionnaire build remains the go-to reference for this style.
  • Twisters (bow): untouched as well. This build should even emerge as one of the most popular of the season according to Fubgun. The Huntress Ice-Tipped Twisters Amazon build perfectly illustrates this path.
  • Poison: on the contrary, this mechanic took a heavy beating. This playstyle is considered nearly dead for this season.
  • Freeze / Snipe Ice Shot build: slightly nerfed on the campaign side, but late game progression remains identical. Still a very solid build overall.
  • Rampage Bear with Tear’s Vengeance: Tear’s Vengeance was nerfed, but Rampage Bear should retain its spot among the strongest choices of the season.
  • Minions (Lich, Demon Form, Bonestorm): summons were buffed. The various Witch variants remain solid and have not been negatively impacted.
  • Quarterstaffs (Monk): with the exception of the one-shot build which was shut down, builds using the Quarterstaff have barely changed.
  • Plant builds (Druid): plant-summoning builds were not modified and remain a viable option for those who enjoy this playstyle.

This list is not exhaustive, but it covers the most important options to keep in mind before diving into PoE2 season 5. Fubgun plans to release more videos in the coming days, including a detailed league start guide and his picks for mid and high tier builds in this new league. If you have any questions about these changes or the builds discussed in this video, the comment section is open.
