Build Overview
This Gemling Legionnaire build (Mercenary ascendancy) is built around a clever idea: pushing
Explosive Spear to its maximum by stacking gem quality. The Gemling fully leverages its quality stacking mechanic — each equipped gem strengthens the entire character — making it one of the most powerful ascendancies in Season 0.5 for this type of archetype.
The core of the build relies on a technical interaction: the spear can « aggravate » ignites, a mechanic normally reserved for bleed that causes the target to take 100% more damage, effectively doubling it. Combined with a Loreweave chest whose mod converts fire damage from ignites into chaos damage, then scaled further with
Wither through
Withering Presence, the result is chaos ignites of staggering power — especially since monsters rarely have chaos resistance.
In practice, the character maintains a 100% chance not to consume frenzy charges, keeping
Explosive Spear constantly at full power. A solid layer of direct damage is added through a
Tornado Shot +
Barrage tech that turns the spear into a true projectile shotgun against bosses. The result: a hybrid DoT/hit build that clears maps quickly and bursts hard on single targets, presented here in its high-end min-max version.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Exceptional damage thanks to ignite conversion into chaos, a resistance that monsters rarely have
- Gemling quality stacking: each equipped gem strengthens the entire build
- 100% chance not to consume frenzy charges, keeping
Explosive Spear always at full power - Excellent map clear via the
Palm of the Dreamer sceptre and Herald of Thunder
Tornado Shot +
Barrage tech that bypasses the single-projectile limit to shred bosses- Huge number of free auras (Impurity,
Eternal Rage, Clarity, Vitality, Precision) thanks to the Gemling and the Absinthe amulet
❌ Weaknesses
- The presented version is very costly: full min-max power requires a significant budget
- Demanding setup: precise balancing of gem colors (13 strength / 13 dexterity / 13 intelligence) and numerous delirium anoints
- Reaching 100% chance not to remove charges requires several stacked sources (quality, mods, jewel, idol)
- Relies on several key uniques (Loreweave, the spear, the jewels) to function at full capacity

Set 1
15 skills • 54 gemmesRecommended Equipment
The full equipment, slot by slot, is detailed in the interactive grid below. Here are the pieces that truly define this build:
- Weapon (spear): the core piece, which allows you to aggravate ignites. Reforge it at the Versium anvil then corrupt it with a Vaal Cultivation Orb to push its physical damage to the maximum.
- Body Armour — Loreweave: the most important item in the build. The mod « ignites you inflict deal chaos damage instead of fire » is essential. Loreweave also fixes maximum resistances at 80%.
- Sceptre — Palm of the Dreamer: a huge clear gain, additional chaos damage, free auras, and chaos resistance all in one item.
- Belt — Mageblood: comfort, resistance cap, and movement speed. A luxury that is not mandatory, but makes the build feel much smoother.
- Amulet — Absinthe: provides a free aura (
Eternal Rage) and allows you to run auras that would otherwise be out of reach. - Rings — Breach Ring with high damage rolls (a crafting guide is available on the author’s Maxroll page).
- Gloves with +2 projectiles (via Call’s Hunt) to maximize modifiers.
- Rune — Ring of the Prism socketed in the body armour: nearly free 60% resistances thanks to how Loreweave works.
Gameplay Tips
- Simple rotation:
Explosive Spear 99% of the time. Throw it on the ground and let the Shrine sceptre detonate packs. - Boss phase: first place
Tornado Shot, trigger
Barrage, then fire your spears into the center of the tornado for a massive projectile shotgun. - Aim for the center: for the tech to work, the spear must be thrown into the tornado itself, never beside it.
- Frenzy charges: maintain constant generation through your dexterity gems. The build is already excellent at 85–90% chance not to remove charges.
- Gem balancing: keep 13 strength gems, 13 dexterity gems, and 13 intelligence gems to benefit from all three Gem Statted effects; use your default attacks simply as gem « ballast. »
The Loreweave Combo: Overpowered Chaos Ignites
The build’s founding mechanic consists of « stealing » the aggravate from bleed and applying it to ignites. Normally, only bleed can be aggravated to deal 100% more damage; the spear used here extends this behaviour to ignites, effectively doubling their power.
The Loreweave body armour pushes the idea even further with its mod « ignites you inflict deal chaos damage instead of fire. » Since monsters rarely have chaos resistance, and we lower it even further with
Withering Presence (stacking
Wither), ignites become a premium damage source that is very difficult to mitigate. Loreweave’s second mod, « fire damage also contributes to bleed magnitude, » additionally allows a double-dip between ignite and bleed without needing any physical damage.
Reaching 100% Chance Not to Consume Frenzy Charges
Explosive Spear behaves radically differently depending on whether you have a frenzy charge or not: with a charge, it strikes immediately and spreads in a cross pattern; without a charge, it becomes a delayed-detonation skill that is far less practical. The goal is therefore to always keep your charges and, to that end, avoid consuming them.
The build stacks several sources to reach 100% chance not to remove charges: the alternative quality of Sentinels
notable Advanced Thaumaturgy (approximately 50%),
Perpetual Charge (25%), a Chronomancer mod on boots (15%), the Fabled Stag node on the tree (10%), and optionally the Idol of Eremia (10%). From 85–90%, the spear remains almost always at full power, hitting for nearly 1,500 attack damage while benefiting from increased ignite magnitude.
Frenzy Charge Generation via the Fathomable Energy Anoint
Charge generation relies on a new anoint notable, Fathomable Energy Generator, accessible only by anointing the amulet through delirium (melancholy, disgust, isolation). Once applied, it grants a skill that generates charges based on the attribute requirements of socketed gems.
Each attribute corresponds to a charge type: dexterity gems generate frenzy charges, strength generates endurance charges, and intelligence generates power charges. This is also why gem colour balancing is so crucial. The other key anoint, Paragon, adds 5% quality to all skills — a particularly strong effect on the Gemling — and becomes anointable on the helmet thanks to a Raven Touch shard.
The Tornado Shot + Barrage Tech: A Spear Shotgun
Explosive Spear has an internal line stating « the number of projectiles cannot be modified »: it’s therefore impossible to throw more than one spear at a time… in theory. The tech involves placing a
Tornado Shot and then throwing the spear directly into the center of the tornado, which causes a multitude of projectiles to ricochet.
On the Gemling, the usual penalty from
Tornado Shot (35% less damage) is entirely offset by the 35% more damage from the ascendancy: no downside whatsoever. By chaining
Tornado Shot then
Barrage before aiming at the center, you achieve a massive projectile overlap and a colossal burst, reserved for bosses and very tanky rare monsters.
Passive Tree, Ascendancy and Unique Jewels
On the ascendancy side, the build takes Essence of Virtue, Advanced Dermatology, Meteoric Implants and Gem Statted. This last one is key: it significantly reduces the movement speed penalty (more so than a Pathfinder), which allows you to throw your spears while maintaining a good gameplay rhythm.
The tree surprisingly starts in the Monk area thanks to the jewel
Split Personality, which allows point allocation from any starting area — ideal for efficiently picking up evasion and energy shield nodes. The other key structural unique jewels are jewel unique Controlled Metamorphosis (for Fabled Stag and
notable Stupefy),
jewel unique From Nothing (on the
keystone Dance with Death node), jewel unique Prism of Belief (+3 levels of
Explosive Spear) and
jewel unique Heart of the Well.
