Black Temple: what to prepare before August 27

Black Temple, ready on 27 August on the TBC Anniversary realms

Article by Kami

The Black Temple opens on 27 August on the Burning Crusade Anniversary realms. Ten days are left, and part of the prep work cannot be caught up once the doors are open. Here is what can be done now, what will have to wait for the day itself, and the wall that stops guilds who show up with nothing ready.

What opens on 27 August, and at exactly what time

Blizzard has dated Phase 3 to 27 August 2026 at 3 pm Pacific time, which is 10 pm UTC that day. In central Europe it lands at midnight, on the night of the 27th to the 28th. If you planned to log in on the evening of the 27th after work, you have a few hours of waiting ahead.

Blizzard Entertainment, 23 July 2026: « Global Launch: August 27 at 3:00 pm PDT », which is 10 pm UTC on the 27th.

Two raids open at the same time. The Black Temple has nine bosses and ends on Illidan Stormrage, who drops the Warglaives of Azzinoth. The Battle for Mount Hyjal has five and ends on Archimonde. Tier 6 gear, Epic Gems and the Netherwing faction with its daily quests arrive as well.

One exception for your calendar: Arena Season 3 does not start alongside the raids. It arrives on 1 September, five days later. PvP is therefore no reason to rush on the 27th.

The attunement cannot be finished before launch

This is the point most guides leave out, and it changes how you should organise everything. Both raids sit behind a mandatory quest chain, the attunement. And that chain cannot be completed before 27 August: its last steps require killing bosses that do not exist on the realms yet.

Analysis of the Black Temple and Mount Hyjal attunement chains before Phase 3
The key pointSam Okonkwo, timesaver.gg, 4 August 2026: both chains are gated, their last steps need Phase 3 content, but the entire Phase 2 half can be cleared right now.

What you can do is clear the whole Phase 2 half of both chains. The players who get into the raid in week one are the ones who did that work over the preceding three weeks. The others will spend the evening of the 27th chasing quests while their guild waits at the door.

So the goal for the ten remaining days is precise: show up on the 27th with two or three short quests left, not fifteen.

The Black Temple chain, the part you can do now

It all starts with your Outland faction. With the Aldor, you pick the quest up from Anchorite Ceyla, at the Altar of Sha’tar. With the Scryers, it is Arcanist Thelis, at the Sanctum of Stars. The first step is The Tablets of Baa’ri.

You need twelve tablet fragments, in the Ruins of Baa’ri, in Shadowmoon Valley. They drop from the local mobs, but picking up the glowing tablets on the ground is much faster. Allow half an hour if the area is not crowded.

Next come Oronu the Elder and then The Ashtongue Corruptors, from the same faction NPC. This part needs no raid at all. It is exactly the kind of chain you can push on your own, on a weekday evening, without pulling twenty-five people together.

Mount Hyjal: The Vials of Eternity

The second chain goes through Soridormi, in the Caverns of Time, who offers The Vials of Eternity. It asks for two pieces: kill Kael’thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep and Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern, then loot a vial from each.

These are the two Phase 2 end bosses. If your guild already kills them every week, it is done in one evening. If not, it is the absolute priority of the next ten days, because nothing unlocks without those two vials. Once the Vials are handed in, your Mount Hyjal access is complete.

What follows happens after launch, and it is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering on site: you will have to kill Rage Winterchill in Hyjal, bring a phylactery back to Akama, then talk to Xi’ri outside the Black Temple entrance in Shadowmoon Valley. The final reward is the Medallion of Karabor, and that medallion has a second use the next section explains.

Shadow resistance, the real wall of the Black Temple

The seventh boss of the raid stops unprepared guilds. Mother Shahraz uses Fatal Attraction, which teleports three random players and deals continuous shadow damage to them until they stand twenty-five yards apart. Without the right gear, the raid does not get past this fight.

Jurdi, method.gg, 22 July 2026: Mother Shahraz is the seventh fight of the raid, and Fatal Attraction blocks all progress if nobody prepared their resistance.

Aim for between 100 and 150 shadow resistance from gear, on top of the 70 from Prayer of Shadow Resistance cast by priests. Guilds who want a comfortable fight push to 174 from gear alone. The useful cap against a boss is 365: anything above that is wasted.

Table of shadow resistance gear pieces for the Black Temple
Icy Veins, shadow resistance gear guide: the Medallion of Karabor gives 40 points on its own, and most epic pieces come from crafting.

Two practical consequences for the ten days that are left. First, most epic shadow protection pieces come from crafting, which means materials and a crafter to line up: that is the slowest part, and it should start right now. Second, the Medallion of Karabor gives 40 resistance on its own. The attunement chain is part of your resistance set, not just paperwork.

Tanks are exempt from this gear, because of how the Saber Lash mechanic works. Everyone else has to get on with it. While waiting for the epic pieces, green and blue « of Shadow Protection » items, combined with enchants and consumables, are enough to clear the bar.

The full phase calendar is detailed in our article on the move to Phase 3. And if you follow what comes next for Classic, the other September deadline is what BlizzCon will say about Classic+, two weeks after the raid opens. On the modern game side, Midnight Season 2 opens on 18 August, just before, and it follows patch 12.1 released on the 11th.
