Unbowed: the WoW Forever story behind the Forsaken paladin

Article by Kami

A former Scarlet crusader, back from the dead, sinks his teeth into the throat of the man who killed him. That man was his friend and his brother in arms. It is the central scene of the first WoW Forever short story, published by Blizzard on October 26, 2026 on its official page: « Unbowed ». Its hero is a Forsaken paladin, and the question it asks is simple: can a Forsaken still serve the Light?

The text is written by Sean Copeland, with illustrations by Surfside 3D. It comes in two formats: an illustrated 22-page PDF, and a 6 minute 28 second video on the official YouTube channel, read by the fireside by Jesse Burch in Cormack’s voice. As of November 2, this reading has 354,617 views, 7,103 likes and 876 comments. The video above lets you listen to it before reading on.

What Unbowed tells (spoiler warning)

Cormack, a former Scarlet crusader trained at the Scarlet Monastery, has come back from the dead. Hiding, he watches crusaders led by Arec Mistmantle execute Forsaken prisoners from a caravan. Arec is a distant relative, his friend, his brother in arms, and the man who killed him.

Arec mocks him by invoking the name of Gavinrad the Dire, Cormack’s father and master. Cormack attacks. Each time he calls on the Light, it strikes his enemies, but it also burns his undead flesh. He ends up killing Arec by tearing out his throat with his teeth.

The Forsaken survivors reject him. A mage attacks him, accuses him of having belonged to the crusade that killed them, and asks him who the real monster is. Cormack tears off his Scarlet tabard and abandons his hammer.

At the edge of his own grave, Danitha, a Forsaken who also wields the Light, finds him. She brings back his father’s hammer, engraved with the motto of the Silver Hand. Cormack prays: this time, the Light heals him instead of consuming him. Danitha greets him with the old motto « Esarus no’Darador » (by blood and honor), and he follows her.

A story written for the Forsaken paladin

WoW Forever adds six race-class combinations that did not exist in 2004. On the Alliance side: the human hunter, the dwarf shaman and the gnome priest. On the Horde side: the orc mage, the troll warlock and the undead paladin. The list comes from the official page « Return to Azeroth in World of Warcraft: Forever », published by Blizzard on October 29, 2026.

AllianceHuman hunter
AllianceDwarf shaman
AllianceGnome priest
HordeOrc mage
HordeTroll warlock
HordeUndead paladin

Of these six choices, the Forsaken paladin is the trickiest for the game’s story. The Light and the undead have been opposed since Warcraft III, and seeing a corpse wield it breaks a rule players take for granted.

The text answers in two ways. First, a price to pay: the Light only heals Cormack at the very end, after burning him at every call. Second, faith: it answers when he accepts it instead of fighting it. Danitha, the Forsaken who finds him at the edge of his grave, shows he is not alone in this.

Blizzard does not say whether this suffering will have an effect in game. Nothing points to a related mechanic for now, and it is best not to infer one. For the rest of the combination, you can read our article on the mounts spotted before the beta, as well as our take on the nine classes to place this choice among the others.

Mistmantle, the name that leads to the manor

The villain of Unbowed bears a name that 2004 players recognize at once: Mistmantle. In Duskwood, the Mistmantle estate is the setting for « The Legend of Stalvan » quest chain, centered on Stalvan Mistmantle. Arec, the Scarlet crusader of the story, therefore shares his family name with a place and a character from the original game.

In WoW Forever, this estate now houses a huge manor. Our client data sees a 5-player instance there, still with no boss or level, as detailed in our entry for Manor Mistmantle.

On the developers’ side, Clay Stone dropped a lead in episode 5 of the official podcast, around 1:38. Icy Veins reports his words: « There might be some homes, some manors out there that folks have found, that might be something interesting in the future ». The site also mentions a level 60 « Mistmantle Prowler » that roamed Duskwood during the beta.

What is established: Arec Mistmantle is a distant relative of Cormack. The story says so, and the Warcraft wiki sums it up. What is not: an official link between Arec, Stalvan’s family and the future dungeon. Connecting the three remains a hypothesis, and nothing we have read confirms it.

Another point, again according to the wiki: the hero of the story, the Forsaken paladin Cormack, does not appear in game yet. For now the Mistmantle name links a published story and a closed dungeon, without Blizzard saying they touch.

On the forum, the timeline does not add up

The official WoW Forever forum (US) thread about the story has 23 posts and 1,568 views. It opens with a timeline objection. A player lays out the Warcraft III timeline and asks: « So how did a Scarlet Crusader get killed by Arthas, raised into Undeath, and break free of his control? »

Official WoW Forever forum (US), October 26, 2026: the timeline question that started the debate.

Replies split several ways. One player replies that the developers said Forever has no link with current WoW and remains free to tell its own story. A lore enthusiast recalls the split of the Silver Hand and the birth of the Scarlet Crusade. A last one judges that undead should not be able to be paladins without serious consequences, and notes that the story shows exactly that, the Light burning them.

On one point, the text itself is clear. Cormack was not killed by Arthas but by Arec Mistmantle, a Scarlet crusader like him. The opening objection therefore assumes a scenario the story never tells. On the other hand, it does not say how Cormack came back with his own will. He climbs out of his grave, that is all.

I think the story answers the gameplay objection, with its price to pay, but leaves the timeline one open. The Forsaken paladin arrives on November 4 with a story. Not yet with an explanation.
