Tomorrow, the World of Warcraft: Forever beta opens its doors. The full release is set for November 4. Even before players get their first access, the test client has let slip a major clue about the expansion’s design.
The beta files contain new mounts designed for the Forsaken Paladin WoW Forever combo, a pairing that has never existed in the game’s history. This is the first time the Forsaken have had access to the Paladin class.
Mounts that break from the Forsaken’s usual imagery
The horses spotted in the beta files are undead mounts. Visible bone, partially decomposed flesh, the classic aesthetic the Forsaken have carried since their debut. But their harness breaks that register. Golden armor, Holy Light ornaments, finishes that recall traditional paladin mounts rather than those of a renegade undead.
These visuals found in the beta files show at least two distinct finish levels. A more understated model, and a noticeably more golden, more ornate, almost ceremonial version. The contrast between the horse’s decay and the armor’s shine remains the most talked-about detail of the Forsaken Paladin WoW Forever combo.
A racial pairing never seen before in the game’s history
The Paladin has always been a class of the Holy Light. Humans, Dwarves, Draenei, and later other peoples close to that Light gained access to it over the course of the expansions. The Forsaken were never among them. Undead born of the Scourge, later freed under the Horde’s banner, they embody the Dark Light and the Renegade instead. The Forsaken Paladin WoW Forever combo breaks a thematic association that has stood for more than twenty years.
This choice isn’t an isolated one. Forever expands several race/class combinations at character creation. The expansion’s new playable people, the Skyborne, illustrate the same logic: Mage on the Alliance side, Shaman on the Horde side, depending on the chosen faction. It’s this same opening of classes that makes the Forsaken Paladin WoW Forever combo possible. Other recent leaks also detail the reputations tied to the Skyborne, proof that the studio is preparing a coherent set of additions around this people.
