Build Overview
The Paladin
Shield of Retribution build is one of the most devastating builds of Season 12, capable of dealing trillions of damage thanks to an explosive Thorns synergy. By investing a single point into
Blessed Shield and converting it into a
Juggernaut skill via
Shield of Retribution, every fourth throw triggers a massive explosion that scales directly with your Thorns. Combined with
Defiance Aura (+200% Thorns damage) and
Thorns and Thistles (+150% Thorns damage), the multipliers stack exponentially.
The gameplay loop is smooth: activate
Arbiter of Justice to make enemies vulnerable, spam
Blessed Shield inside packs, and use
Clash and
Aegis between throws to maximize your Thorns multipliers. This build excels both in farming Infernal Hordes and against Tier 5 Bosses and even Bloodied Bosses (Tier 7), while remaining accessible with basic gear.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- Astronomical damage through Thorns explosions, reaching trillions
- Scales up very quickly with minimal initial investment
- Excellent for farming thanks to the pull from
Godslayer Crown that groups enemies together - Capable of killing Tier 5 and Tier 7 Bloodied Bosses
Weaknesses
- Resource management is tricky with the Quarks rune active
- Requires keeping
Arbiter of Justice active at all times for the damage bonus - The optimized version demands specific Greater Affixes on several pieces
Recommended Equipment
Table de Loot
Weapon — Griswald's Opus: The core weapon of the build. The ideal Greater Affixes are
Break the Line and
Heavyweight at 100%. The Lucky Hit critical strike that deals double damage and heals is essential as it feeds the Hailed Salt aspect to permanently maintain your Fortify.
Offhand —
Ward of the White Dove: A drop from Varshan, this piece takes
Blessed Shield to the next level by doubling its damage and reducing the Faith cost by 7 for the next three throws after using another skill. A Greater Affix on the
Blessed Shield double damage at 100% is the absolute top priority.
Helm —
Godslayer Crown: Combined with the
Wildbolt Aspect, this helm marks and pulls Savage enemies, granting +40% bonus damage against them. This combo makes
Rend farming in Hordes and the Pit extremely comfortable. For high-Pit pushing,
Heir of Perdition offers more raw damage, but at the cost of significantly less comfort.
Chest — Mantle of the Gray: A drop from Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint or Uruvar, this chest consumes all your Resolve charges to amplify damage from
Juggernaut skills. A Greater Affix on
Thorns and Thistles is the most impactful bonus as it directly multiplies your Thorns damage.
Gloves: Prioritize critical strike chance, attack speed, maximum life, and cooldown reduction. The
Juggernaut Covenant aspect grants +100% bonus damage with the
Juggernaut oath.
Ring 1 —
Aspect of Chastisement: Your
Juggernaut skills deal +71% damage to Bosses and Crowd-Controlled enemies. With the permanent pull from
Godslayer Crown, the condition is always met. A Greater Affix on attack speed and cooldown reduction is optimal.
Ring 2 —
Ring of Starless Skies: Reduces the cost of
Blessed Shield to just 7, largely resolving resource issues with the Quarks rune. Alternatively, a ring with
Aspect of Utmost Glory grants +70% bonus damage against weakened enemies (via
Enhanced Fanaticism Aura), at the cost of tighter resource management.
Amulet — Celestial Stride: While
Arbiter of Justice is active, you benefit from a damage bonus of up to +188%. This is why cooldown reduction is so important: the Arbiter's duration must overlap with its cooldown to never lose the bonus.
Build Variants
This build exists in two main variants that fundamentally change the gameplay loop:
Quarks Version (maximum damage): The Quarks rune grants +100% bonus damage, propelling Thorns explosions to astronomical levels. The trade-off is active resource management: you must alternate between
Blessed Shield throws and
Clash to replenish your Faith globe. Use the Zul rune combined with Igny on the helm to automatically summon
Decrepify, triggering Quarks optimally in all situations.
Ohm Version (comfort): Replace Quarks with the Barbarian rune
Ohm and you can simply hold down
Blessed Shield without ever emptying your Faith globe. You lose +100% damage, but gameplay becomes much smoother. This version remains more than sufficient for all Tier 5 content and Infernal Hordes.
Gameplay Tips
Basic rotation: Activate
Arbiter of Justice inside enemy packs to make them vulnerable. Spam
Blessed Shield (the explosion triggers on the 4th throw). Use
Clash every 6 seconds for the +20% Thorns bonus and Resolve generation, then
Aegis every 10 seconds for an additional +40% Thorns.
Against Bosses: Open with
Arbiter of Justice, maintain
Blessed Shield until Faith is depleted, then
Clash followed by
Aegis to recharge Thorns multipliers. Tier 5 Bosses fall in seconds thanks to the explosions.
Resolve Management:
Clash generates 2 Resolve charges by default, but with the "Resolve Generated +5" temper, a single
Clash generates 7 charges. With two rapid
Clash uses, you reach 13 charges, maximizing the damage bonus from Mantle of the Gray and the
Juggernaut oath.
Keep the Arbiter up: Invest heavily in cooldown reduction (paragon, gear, tempers) so that the duration of
Arbiter of Justice overlaps with its cooldown. If you never leave the Arbiter form, the Celestial Stride damage bonus remains permanently active.
Arbre des Talents
Mercenaire
Paragon and Glyphs
The paladin shield of retribution build Paragon focuses on three axes: cooldown reduction to keep
Arbiter of Justice active, Thorns damage multipliers, and block chance to synergize with the Shieldbearer board.
Castle Board: Grants +100% bonus damage. The
Honed glyph is placed here to generate Faith on every critical strike, ensuring a constant resource flow while multiplying critical damage.
Relentless Board: Provides -30% cooldown reduction while moving and +80% damage. The
Spirit glyph grants an additional critical damage bonus and causes enemies to take +15% more damage. Alternatively, the Resplendent glyph reduces the cooldown of all non-aura skills after an aura throw, helping to keep the Arbiter up permanently.
Preacher Board: Increases damage based on your attack speed (cap of 100% easily reached). The
Revenge glyph causes Thorns damage to deal +15% multiplicative damage to enemies hit.
Shieldbearer Board: Grants +80% bonus damage proportional to your block chance. The
Sentinel glyph amplifies
Juggernaut skill damage and grants a bonus per Resolve stack. Collect all available block chance nodes along the path.
The
Chip glyph is placed first to make enemies take +15% more damage, serving as an effective global multiplier from the very first boards.
Resource Management and Runes
Faith management is the most technical aspect of this build, especially with the Quarks rune active. When Quarks triggers, skill costs temporarily increase, which can drain your Faith globe quickly. To counter this:
The Zul + Igny combination (on the helm) automatically summons the Necromancer's
Decrepify during combat, triggering Quarks regularly and optimally. This is the most efficient method to maximize Quarks uptime.
To stabilize your resources: invest in Faith per second on pants, temper primary resource restoration chance on rings, and drink an
Elixir of Resourcefulness to reduce the cost to 15. The
Ring of Starless Skies reduces the cost even further. With these combined sources, even when using Quarks, a quick
Clash is enough to replenish your Faith globe and resume throwing.
Scaling and Progression Toward Bloodied Content
To break through the Bloodied Boss threshold (Tier 7, after Pit 100), several optimizations are needed. A Griswald's Opus with Greater Affix on
Break the Line and
Heavyweight at 100% pushes damage from a few trillion to nearly 10 trillion.
The Greater Affix on
Blessed Shield double damage on
Ward of the White Dove at 100% is also a top priority. On the Celestial Stride amulet, maxing
Iron Sharpens Iron and Crack the Destruction of armor adds another +12% bonus damage.
For Bosses specifically, swap
Godslayer Crown for
Heir of Perdition to maximize single-target damage. Finally, leveling all glyphs from 70 to 90 represents a considerable power gain across the entire build.
