228,086 players online at the same moment on Steam, and Deadlock is still invite-only. On August 31, Valve had pushed the update back to « late September » through Yoshi, promising to keep players informed. The date held: Deadlock City Never Sleeps launched on September 29, with six new heroes, a rebuilt New York map, the Broker merchant and a revamped interface.
A record set by a game that is still closed
The day after launch, SteamDB logged this peak of 228,086 concurrent players, a figure reported by Beebom in an article by Ishan Adhikary dated September 30, 2026. The previous record, 171,490 players, dated from 2024, in the middle of the invite-only testing phase. The gap is more than 56,000 players.

On the chart, the contrast is stark. Around 90,000 peak players right before the update, in August and September 2026. A high of about 120,000 in January 2026, after Old Gods, New Blood, which already added six heroes. Then the jump to more than 220,000. At the time of the snapshot, 227,136 players were still online: this is not a one-hour spike.
As for access, the game stays closed. Only the « invite friends » option exists on Steam, and no public opening date has been announced.
In my view, a record set by a closed game says a lot about demand. For ranked mode, launched in August, more players means tighter matchmaking and better games.
Six heroes, and the players pick the order
Deadlock City Never Sleeps brings six new heroes: Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Valve sums up each character in a few keywords. According to the Shacknews article by Sam Chandler, Nurse Harrow comes down to « strict, terrifying, savior » and Solomon to « strategist, focused, checkmate. »

The six heroes don’t arrive all at once. Two release each week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. PT (11 p.m. in Paris). The first release lands on Friday, October 2, 2026. Six heroes at that pace take three weeks: the last one should therefore arrive around October 16, but that is a deduction from the announced schedule, not a confirmed date.
A community vote decides the release order, and it happens in the new pre-match lobby. The system rests on four mechanics:
- the winning team’s votes count double;
- your first win of the day also doubles your votes;
- priority tokens are earned by playing, starting with the first release;
- campaign posters let you back your favorite hero.
Valve has done this before: the Old Gods, New Blood update in January 2026 had already added six heroes with a vote on the arrival order.
From a player’s point of view, voting in the lobby with a bonus for the winning team turns the vote into a reason to play, and to win, for three weeks. It’s retention dressed up as an election campaign, embraced with humor all the way down to the posters. The effect on the meta (the current balance between heroes) will show quickly: every new hero lands in a game at peak traffic, and the first days of each release will be chaotic in ranked. The balance set by the September 16 patch, which reworked catch-up mechanics and nerfed Celeste, will be shaken up twice a week.
The Deadlock City Never Sleeps Map: Steam, Haunts and a Merchant Who Makes You Pay
The New York map has been visually reworked, lane by lane. According to the update page on deadlock.wiki, the back alleys become distinct neighborhoods in each quarter of the map, and Beebom counts four new neighborhoods. Here is what changes on the ground.

- Steam Vents: scattered across the map, they turn invisible and regenerate anyone standing on them.
- Haunts (formerly neutral camps): completely redone, with many new types. Shacknews notes that they match the identity of each lane: pickle jar, books, trash bags, barrels.
- Tough Crates and Healing Snacks: the crates need a heavy melee attack to open, while the snacks, hidden around the map, heal.
- Buff Containers (formerly Golden Statues) and Sinner’s Sacrifice: they can now grant spell resistance, ability range, bullet resistance or movement speed. Sinner’s Sacrifice also gets variable timings for earning the bonus.
- The Broker: a mysterious, roaming merchant who sells upgrades where every bonus comes with a drawback. Corrupted Items arrive with him, and in Street Brawl, a corrupted item is handed out after the round 5 item draft.
Shacknews compares the Broker to a deal with the devil: every gain has a price, and it will be up to the player to weigh the trade.
In terms of game reading, a zone that makes you invisible and heals at the same time changes ambushes and retreats alike. Knowing where the steam vents are could become map knowledge as important as knowing the objectives. The heavy-melee crates reward those who already master close combat, and the Broker adds a risk choice in the middle of the match. These are readings to confirm: the meta hasn’t settled yet.
One practical note: our beginner’s guide describes the map from before this update, so treat its lane landmarks with caution.
The small lines you will feel in every match
In the full Deadlock City Never Sleeps notes, the « Additional Update Notes » section holds the most important line for ranked players: using an ability or an item is now instant on key press. Previously, the action waited for the next « window, » which could feel like an unresponsive key. In tight fights, fewer actions get lost. The rest of the tweaks come down to five points.
- Engine updated to the latest version of Source 2, with improved anti-cheat, better network prediction and faster rendering and audio.
- New sounds for every hero’s light and heavy melee attacks, and new music for deaths, respawns and kill streaks.
- New drop shadows that fall vertically instead of following the sun: better performance, and easier enemy tracking.
- Inset HUD display option for the 21:9 format.
- Rebindable key for the « avoid hero » command, handy with a mouse that has no middle button.
Parrying an objective no longer resets the parry cooldown, an exploit fix. Graves can now destroy Venator‘s traps with his weapon.

Yamato gets a fix for its air strike, which failed against solid targets such as turrets, shrines and objectives. Sinclair receives « many fixes, » and exploit cases involving The Doorman are resolved.
The first of the six new heroes arrives Friday, October 2 at 2 p.m. PT (11 p.m. in Paris).
