GUIDE BARBARIAN
Build Overview
This Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients build guide covers Season 12 — The
Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian build is one of the most devastating builds of Season 12. Built around pure
Hammer of the Ancients, this build exploits the synergy between
Call of the Ancients, Aftershocks, and precise Fury management to deal massive AoE damage.
The build offers 5 progressive variants — from Legendary to Full Paragon, through Unique, Mythic, and Selig — allowing a natural power progression as you acquire gear. The Mythic version with
The Grandfather and
Ring of Starless Skies represents the peak build power, but the intermediate variants are already very strong.
This build excels in endgame content, whether for Boss farming, Pit pushing, or mob clearing thanks to the massive AoE of
Hammer of the Ancients combined with
Aspect of Ancestral Force.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients build stands out for its combination of raw AoE power and solid survivability.
Strengths
- Extremely tanky thanks to
Defensive Stance and massive damage reductions - High attack speed with
Frenzy and
Call of the Ancients buffs - Excellent crowd control and AoE damage through Aftershocks
- Versatile: effective against Bosses and mob clearing alike
Weaknesses
- Heavily gear-dependent — requires specific pieces to function properly
- Demanding Fury management, especially with
Crown of Lucion - The
Melted Heart of Selig variant is hard to master and dangerous without Fury
Recommended Equipment
Table de Loot
The interactive grid above shows the complete gear for each variant. Here are the key pieces and their strategic role in the build.
Helm
Crown of Lucion is the cornerstone of the build — it increases the Fury cost of
Hammer of the Ancients but grants up to 90%[x] bonus damage. If you cannot sustain your Fury,
Harlequin Crest is a more comfortable alternative that provides the cooldown reduction needed and better survivability.
Chest and Pants
Mantle of Mountain's Fury is a massive damage source: each Aftershock explodes on contact with
Hammer of the Ancients, granting 100%[x] bonus damage. It also provides Armor and
Defensive Stance for survivability.
Tibault's Will adds bonus damage on every Unstoppable activation, obtained via
Enhanced Rallying Cry or
Walking Arsenal.
Jewelry
Ring of Red Furor guarantees a Critical Strike on every
Hammer of the Ancients hit when the cost exceeds 100 Fury — synergizing perfectly with
Crown of Lucion.
Arreat's Bearing reduces
Call of the Ancients cooldown by up to 75%, which is essential for Fury generation via Korlic.
Weapons
The Arsenal selection uses the Two-Handed Mace.
Ramaladni's Magnum Opus has been moved to the armor slot to free up a weapon slot — it has been passively active since Season 10.
Battle Trance grants
Frenzy stacks on Lucky Hit, and
Hammer of the Ancients has a very high Lucky Hit chance.
Mythics
The ultimate configuration uses
The Grandfather to double the Critical Strike damage bonus and add massive maximum resources, and
Ring of Starless Skies to increase damage after each primary resource expenditure.
Melted Heart of Selig adds an enormous amount of maximum resources, massively amplifying damage via
Furious Hammer of the Ancients — but beware, this piece is extremely difficult to manage.
Build Variants
The Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients build offers 5 variants to support your progression:
Legendary Variant
The first variant to use after reaching level 60. It uses only Legendary aspects on each gear piece. You can add Unique items as you obtain them — check the Unique variant to see where to slot them.
Unique Variant
This configuration stacks resources thanks to
Battle Trance,
Ramaladni's Magnum Opus,
Ring of Red Furor, and
Tibault's Will.
Hammer of the Ancients scales its damage via maximum Fury thanks to
Furious Hammer of the Ancients — so you don't need to stack Critical Strike Chance.
Strategic Ground Stomp keeps
Call of the Ancients permanently active, and
100,000 Steps automatically casts
Ground Stomp on every full activation of
Walking Arsenal.
Mythic Variant
The most powerful configuration with
Harlequin Crest,
Ring of Starless Skies,
The Grandfather, and
Melted Heart of Selig. The damage scaling is massive thanks to maximum resources. Warning:
Melted Heart of Selig is extremely difficult to manage — you must remove ALL Maximum Life from your gear, skill tree, and Paragon boards. Your Fortify will drop but this won't be an issue as
Melted Heart of Selig will absorb all incoming damage.
Selig and Full Paragon Variants
The last two variants optimize respectively the configuration around
Melted Heart of Selig and the full Paragon board with 212 points invested to maximize Strength (636), Intelligence (186), Dexterity (281), and Willpower (321) stats.
Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients — Gameplay Tips
The rotation for this build is relatively simple but requires good Fury management:
- Cast
Call of the Ancients to activate Fury generation, attack speed, and bonus damage. - Use your Shouts as soon as they are available (Legendary variant), and
Call of the Ancients at the end of every cooldown. - Spam
Hammer of the Ancients to accumulate 10 stacks of
Enhanced Hammer of the Ancients, which grants 100(x) bonus Fury generation and 100 maximum Fury. - Once all buffs are active, chain
Hammer of the Ancients on every group of monsters you pull.
Golden rule: NEVER spam
Hammer of the Ancients if there are no monsters around you — you will drain your Fury for nothing.
For Hardcore players: always prioritize defense over offense. Make sure you have
Defensive Stance,
Aggressive Resistance, and
Martial Vigor in your skill tree.
Walking Arsenal is excellent for maintaining the Unstoppable state and generating Fury.
Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients — Paragon and Glyphs
The full Paragon board uses 212 points distributed to maximize Strength (636), Dexterity (281), and Willpower (321). First invest the minimum in your Glyphs to activate them, then move to all Legendary nodes before filling the defensive nodes.
Offensive Glyphs like
Might and
Revenge maximize damage. If you are playing Hardcore and fear dying, replace them with defensive Glyphs like
Territorial and
Undaunted. The All Stats from
The Grandfather play an important role in activating the conditional bonuses on Paragon nodes.
Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients — Fury Management
Fury management is the most critical aspect of this build, especially with
Crown of Lucion raising the cost of
Hammer of the Ancients to 93 Fury per hit. Without
Ring of Starless Skies, the build becomes very difficult to play — you can temporarily replace it with
Tuskhelm of Joritz the Mighty or a Legendary.
Call of the Ancients cooldown must be at 9.5 seconds to guarantee constant generation. Korlic generates 10 Fury per hit — the more Ancients active, the faster your Fury regenerates. A Greater Affix cooldown reduction on
Arreat's Bearing is ideal, otherwise temper
Call of the Ancients cooldown reduction on your rings.
Bold Chieftain's Aspect keeps
Rallying Cry permanently active, granting 30% bonus Fury generation. If that is not enough,
Yen's Blessing is an excellent option. A Greater Affix Resource Cost Reduction on two-handed weapons can reach 26.26% and solve most resource problems.
For Fury issues in open world, use the following rune combinations:
Ahu +
Lum,
Igni +
Lum,
Zan +
Lum,
Bac +
Lum,
Lith +
Lum.
Arsenal Selection and Expertise
The Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients build uses the Two-Handed Mace as the Arsenal selection. The Mythic variants assign
Frenzy for dual wield,
Mighty Throw for slashing, and
Hammer of the Ancients for bludgeoning.
The Weapon Expertise Technique chosen is the Polearm, which grants 15%(x) bonus Lucky Hit Chance and 15(x) bonus damage when you are at full health. You do not need to use the weapon matching your Technique — you keep the Polearm bonus while fighting with the Two-Handed Mace.
Arbre des Talents
Mercenaire
