Build Overview

The Whirlwind Barbarian is a timeless classic in Diablo 4, and Season 13 "Lord of Hatred" gives it a powerful second wind. Presented by @Rob2628, this build is designed to farm Torment 12 (T12), the highest difficulty level in the game, while maintaining constant movement speed and DPS through a perfectly oiled skill synergy. The result: a fire tornado that never stops spinning.

The core mechanic revolves around the triple shoutRallying CryRallying Cry, War CryWar Cry and Challenging ShoutChallenging Shout — which trigger in sequence to keep all offensive and defensive buffs permanently active. WhirlwindWhirlwind is then used as a fiery finisher, amplified by fire-focused gear that triggers continuous overheating. Mobility is provided by Lunging StrikeLunging Strike, equipped with the Berserking rune, whose sub-2-second cooldown enables near-permanent dashing.

The build's strength lies in limitless rage: by generating Fury beyond the maximum, each excess point becomes an uncapped damage multiplier. Combined with the Aspect of Channeling on the amulet (which massively boosts the damage of channeling skills like WhirlwindWhirlwind), the result is elite-tier DPS capable of chaining T12 packs at breakneck speed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Exceptional fire DPS thanks to limitless rage and the Aspect of Channeling, capable of melting T12 Bosses in seconds.
  • Permanent mobility via Lunging StrikeLunging Strike (cooldown under 2s): the Barbarian dashes in a loop without ever standing still.
  • Triple shout (Rallying CryRallying Cry, War CryWar Cry, Challenging ShoutChallenging Shout) provides constant defensive solidity and offensive buffs.
  • Very strong toughness thanks to Gohr's Devastating GripsGohr's Devastating Grips which pull enemies in and make them explode, clearing packs quickly.

Cons

  • Heavily dependent on mythic items (Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition, Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies) to reach its full T12 potential.
  • Complex Fury management: maintaining limitless rage requires good mastery of skill timing and Weapon Swap.
  • Strict shout rotation — missing a shout breaks the buffs and leaves the character vulnerable in dense areas.

Helm: Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition is the reference mythic, providing a Greater Affix in Strength and Maximum Resource that directly amplifies Fury generation and Strength-scaled damage. As an accessible alternative, the Ugly Bastard HelmUgly Bastard Helm combined with ApexApex provides a solid entry point without any mythic. The CirCir and GarGar runes are socketed into the helm to trigger their passive effects.

Chest: The Aspect of DisobedienceAspect of Disobedience on the chest is an essential defensive piece: it provides massive damage reduction when triggering Overpower, which happens frequently with a Barbarian generating this much Fury. The BacBac and CehCeh runes are socketed here.

Gloves: Gohr's Devastating GripsGohr's Devastating Grips are the keystone of this build. These unique gloves add a fire explosion at the end of each WhirlwindWhirlwind, pulling nearby enemies into the vortex and making them explode. Combined with the build's fire focus, they turn every end of channeling into a devastating AoE. The Greater Affixes Critical Strike Damage Multiplier and Attack Speed further amplify their impact.

Pants: The Aspect of Heavenly StrengthAspect of Heavenly Strength is retained on the Pants for its dual contribution to toughness and offensive multiplier, directly benefiting Strength and Fury per Second generation.

Boots: The Overheating AspectOverheating Aspect is the build's passive engine: by continuously spending Fury with WhirlwindWhirlwind, the Barbarian enters an overheated state and generates additional fire bonuses. The "Attacks Reduce Evade's Cooldown" affix on the boots is critical to keep Lunging StrikeLunging Strike available at all times.

Amulet: The Aspect of Channeling is arguably the most important aspect of the build — it massively boosts the damage of channeling skills, and WhirlwindWhirlwind falls squarely into that category. A Diamond is socketed to reinforce resistances.

Rings: The Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies is the secondary mythic that reduces resource costs with each consecutive skill, creating a perfect synergy with limitless rage. The second ring carries the Crushing Aspect which continuously boosts damage. In the no-mythic variant, two legendary rings with the Crushing Aspect and the Vehement Brawler's AspectVehement Brawler's Aspect make a solid replacement.

Weapons: WhirlwindWhirlwind is assigned to the two-handed mace (2H Mace) to benefit from the Weapons Master board and limitless rage. Lunging StrikeLunging Strike is assigned to the dual-wield weapons, allowing each Weapon Swap to generate additional Fury through the Weapons Master board.

Horadric Seal S13

This build's Horadric Seal integrates 5 charms from the Sescheron's Fury set across the 6 available slots: Fer, Mlor, Berú, Linta and Phoba. This set is iconic for the Whirlwind Barbarian in S13 — Rob2628 himself highlights it in the video by showing the enormous size of his character and his WhirlwindWhirlwind: "Look at the size of that thing". The 6th set slot is unlocked by the seal, which grants a "+1 Unique Charm Slot" bonus (twice), allowing you to equip a second unique charm and reach that sixth slot.

The unique charm Crown of LucionCrown of Lucion (slot 4) is the other pillar of the talisman: each time you use a skill with a resource cost, you gain a damage multiplier that stacks up to 7 charges. With the triple shout rotation + WhirlwindWhirlwind + Call of the AncientsCall of the Ancients, all Fury consumers, all 7 charges are reached and maintained permanently, providing a constant elite damage multiplier. The seal itself grants Critical Strike Damage on top of the two additional unique slots.

Build Variants

Fire Mythics P230 (Endgame Variant — currently played by Rob2628): This is the build in its fully realized form, designed for T12. The Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition in the helm slot and the Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies as the mythic ring are the two pieces that take the DPS to another level. The chest carries the Aspect of DisobedienceAspect of Disobedience for Overpower damage reduction, and the amulet benefits from the Aspect of Channeling to maximize WhirlwindWhirlwind damage. The Edgemaster's AspectEdgemaster's Aspect can replace the Aspect of Channeling depending on availability, at the cost of a slight compromise on raw DPS.

No Mythics P200 Start (Accessible Variant — for starting the season): This variant delivers very solid performance without any mythic items. The Ugly Bastard HelmUgly Bastard Helm replaces the Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition — less optimal but functional, to be paired with ApexApex to compensate. The chest carries the Aspect of MightAspect of Might in place of the Aspect of DisobedienceAspect of Disobedience, and two legendary rings (with the Crushing Aspect and the Vehement Brawler's AspectVehement Brawler's Aspect) replace the mythic rings. The skill rotation remains identical, and the path to mythics unfolds naturally by progressively farming T12.

Gameplay Tips

Shout rotation: Trigger Rallying CryRallying Cry and Lunging StrikeLunging Strike near-simultaneously to proc their bonuses together (Rallying Cry's duration is around 4 seconds). Immediately follow up with War CryWar Cry to apply the Vulnerable debuff on enemies, then Challenging ShoutChallenging Shout (or Iron SkinIron Skin if you use that alternative) to lock in the damage reduction. Keep this cycle looping — a shout falling off breaks your tankiness.

Permanent dash via Lunging Strike: Lunging StrikeLunging Strike equipped with the Berserking rune has a cooldown under 2 seconds, meaning you can dash almost continuously between packs. Use it not only for mobility but also to generate Fury and keep the Berserking buff active between fights.

Limitless rage — generate beyond your maximum: The build's key mechanic is limitless rage: every point of Fury generated beyond your maximum becomes an uncapped damage multiplier. With Weapon Swap (which generates Fury via the Weapons Master board) + Rallying CryRallying Cry + War CryWar Cry, you constantly saturate your Fury and accumulate this bonus. Don't hold WhirlwindWhirlwind for too long: the goal is to maintain a continuous flow.

Strategic weapon swap: WhirlwindWhirlwind is assigned to the two-handed mace (2H Mace) and Lunging StrikeLunging Strike to the dual-wield. Each swap triggers the Weapons Master bonus that generates additional Fury — weave it naturally into your rotation rather than ignoring this mechanic.

Stacking Crown of LucionCrown of Lucion: The Crown of LucionCrown of Lucion charm adds a stack with every skill that has a Fury cost. With Rallying CryRallying Cry, War CryWar Cry, Challenging ShoutChallenging Shout, WhirlwindWhirlwind and Call of the AncientsCall of the Ancients, you reach all 7 charges within seconds and maintain them permanently, representing a massive damage multiplier.

DPS spike with Call of the Ancients: Save Call of the AncientsCall of the Ancients for high-priority Bosses and elites. Its triple boost (damage bonus, enhanced version, and attack speed bonus) combined with the already-active triple shout buffs creates a devastating DPS window.

Talent Tree

Mercenary

Raheir is the primary mercenary for this build, with his signature skill BastionBastion. His role is primarily defensive: he projects a shield on the Barbarian and allies, absorbing a portion of incoming damage and allowing you to stay in WhirlwindWhirlwind without interruption. His Ground Stomp skill also triggers crowd control effects on nearby enemies, proccing additional synergies.

Varyana is used as a reinforcement (Companion). Her Bloodthirst skill synergizes perfectly with the Barbarian's offensive profile: it amplifies Fury generation on kills and provides a damage bonus that intensifies on low-health enemies, further accelerating pack clearing in T12.

Paragon and Glyphs

This build uses 5 paragon boards at level 100/100, each carrying an optimized glyph for the Whirlwind Barbarian.

Start Board — Might Glyph: The starting board focuses on Might and Carnage nodes to maximize Strength and base damage. The MightMight glyph at rank 100 amplifies all Strength bonuses within its radius of influence, creating a solid foundation for the entire paragon.

Carnage Board — Crusher Glyph: Carnage deepens the offensive axis with Crusher and Exploit nodes. The CrusherCrusher glyph boosts damage against Vulnerable enemies — which is permanent in combat thanks to War CryWar Cry applying Vulnerable.

Blood Rage Board — Challenger Glyph: Blood Rage is the densest board in allocated nodes (62 nodes), with Challenger and Exploit as priorities. The ChallengerChallenger glyph generates a significant damage multiplier, particularly effective during extended combat phases.

Warbringer Board — Wrath Glyph: Warbringer is dedicated to Fury generation in critical situations. The WrathWrath glyph creates a direct synergy with limitless rage: the more Fury you generate beyond the maximum, the more the glyph amplifies your damage — a virtuous loop at the heart of the build.

Weapons Master Board — Revenge Glyph: The final board leverages the Weapon Swap mechanic (Whirlwind on 2H Mace, Lunging Strike on dual-wield). The RevengeRevenge glyph turns each weapon swap into an offensive event, reinforcing damage output after each swap. Marshal (cooldown reduction) can replace this board long-term if you want to compress shout cooldowns.
