Build Overview

Blizzard significantly buffed the Necromancer in Season 13 "Lord of Hatred", and this build fully exploits these improvements to push your Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead toward damage numbers that literally reach trillions. Designed by P4wnyhof, this build turns your GolemGolem and skeletons into a relentless war machine capable of clearing Torment 12 and defeating Uber Mephisto with ease.

The core mechanic revolves around Sanguivor, Blade of Zir, a unique weapon that converts your minions' activity into a "Vampiric Curse" that can stack up to 20 souls. When your 20 souls are active and you trigger Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead, you gain a 1,000% damage multiplier — an astronomical bonus that then combines with multipliers from Skeleton Warrior, Skeleton Mage, the Horadric Seal board, and Paragon Glyphs to reach unimaginable values.

Beyond raw power, the build offers unusual mobility for a Necromancer thanks to Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils used as a movement skill, allowing you to traverse areas quickly. Survivability is ensured by the shields from Skeleton Mage in shadow mode, the Fortify from Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils, and the damage reduction from the legendary chest. A character with 12 to 14 hours of playtime can already approach trillions of damage in a single Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead trigger.

Managing Overpower stacks is the other strategic pillar of the build. Through Iron MaidenIron Maiden, the GolemGolem, and the blood orbs generated by DecrepifyDecrepify, you permanently maintain 12 active Overpower stacks, which further multiplies your ultimate's damage through Banished Lord's Talisman and the mythic Red Blessing.

Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • Explosive trillion-level damage in a single Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead cast
  • High mobility for a Necromancer thanks to Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils
  • Tanky thanks to mage shields, Fortify, and damage reduction
  • Capable of defeating Uber Mephisto and clearing Torment 12 with ease
  • Minions that reform instantly from corpses — no need to re-summon manually
  • Very strong synergy between multipliers: undead, Horadric Seal, Overpower, Sanguivor, Blade of Zir
  • Dynamic and satisfying gameplay: each skeleton explosion amplifies the next ones

❌ Cons

  • Dependency on 20 active souls before triggering Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead — requires patience
  • Requires Sanguivor, Blade of Zir to reach full potential (targeted unique)
  • Learning curve around managing Overpower stacks and vampiric souls
  • Red Blessing (mythic) dramatically improves damage but remains rare to obtain
  • Cooldown on Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead — burst build rather than constant DPS

The centerpiece of the gear is undoubtedly Sanguivor, Blade of Zir: this unique weapon causes your minions' damage to inflict Vampiric Curse on enemies, and consuming a curse contributes 3 souls. With a cap of 20 souls, you gain up to 1,000% bonus damage on your Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead — the central multiplier everything else revolves around.

For the helmet, The Undercrown is the recommended choice as it adds 4 extra skeletons (bringing the total to 20 active minions) and provides 16% bonus damage to Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead. It also lets you direct your mages toward the enemy. As an endgame alternative, Heir of Perdition offers a 60% damage multiplier (paired with the Wild Bolt Aspect on boots). Godslayer Crown is the most accessible option for progressing through farm content.

Blood Moon BreechesBlood Moon Breeches are essential: they grant 60% Critical Strike Damage against enemies affected by curses, which combines perfectly with the Vampiric Curse constantly applied by Sanguivor, Blade of Zir. Paired with survival runes socketed into their slot, they are one of the best pants in the game for this build.

On the legendary aspect side, the Aspect of Heavenly StrengthAspect of Heavenly Strength on the chest is essential for Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead, while the Hellbent Commander Aspect on ring 2 amplifies minion damage by 70% against the targeted enemy. The Tidal AspectTidal Aspect completes the rings with an additional multiplier on Vulnerable damage. The Crushing Aspect on gloves maximizes Critical Strike Damage, and the Aspect of Hewed Flesh on boots ensures continuous corpse generation needed to fuel your interactions.

The mythic amulet Red Blessing is the holy grail of this build: it grants 4 additional maximum Overpower stacks while you are at full health, for a total of 8 stacks. Combined with Tibault's Will (which adds 4 more stacks when Fortified), you reach 12 permanent stacks — up to 211% additive damage just from Tempering affixes on Overpower stacks, on top of the 80% from Red Blessing and the 96% from Banished Lord's Talisman.

Horadric Seal S13

The Waking Touch set from the Horadric Seal is absolutely central to this build. It grants your minions 60% bonus damage and reduces Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead's cooldown by one second each time they deal damage. Additionally, 35% of incoming damage is redirected to your undead (who reform anyway), and Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead itself gains 450% bonus damage. Your minions also become larger, tougher, and faster.

For the talisman charm, Banished Lord's Talisman is the optimal choice: critical hits deal 12% bonus damage per active Overpower stack. With 12 permanent stacks (including during Boss fights against Mephisto), this represents 144% bonus Critical Strike Damage — a colossal multiplier that stacks with all the others.

Gameplay Tips

This build's rotation revolves around one simple but precise principle: never trigger Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead before reaching exactly 20 vampiric souls. Watch the Sanguivor, Blade of Zir counter and wait until it is at its maximum. While waiting, spam Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils to Fortify yourself, generate corpses, and maintain Vulnerable stacks on enemies. Also use Iron MaidenIron Maiden and DecrepifyDecrepify to curse enemies and accumulate your Overpower stacks through blood orbs.

To maximize your Overpower stacks, actively pick up the blood orbs generated by DecrepifyDecrepify and the blood surge from Iron MaidenIron Maiden. Each blood orb picked up adds one Overpower stack. Command your Skeleton Warrior to attack to build Resolve stacks, then let them explode on command — they will reform instantly from corpses. Each corpse interaction also feeds Sanguivor, Blade of Zir to keep your 20 souls full.

Before a Boss fight, make sure you have: your 20 vampiric souls active, your 12 Overpower stacks (verify Fortify for the 4 stacks from Tibault's Will), your full complement of minions (20 skeletons if you are wearing The Undercrown), and your GolemGolem ready to use for its additional Overpower stacks. Then trigger Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead when all these multipliers are active to reach maximum damage. The cooldown reduction from The Waking Touch set will let you recast your ultimate much faster than normal as soon as your skeletons start attacking.

For survival, position yourself inside enemy groups rather than at range: Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils generates Fortify instantly on contact with bodies, and DecrepifyDecrepify slows and weakens everything around you. If you are wearing Blood Moon BreechesBlood Moon Breeches with the right runes, your close-range survival will be much better than expected for a Necromancer.

Talent Tree

The seven skills of this build form a cohesive ecosystem where each element feeds the others. Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead at rank 15 with the "Pile the Bodies" upgrade is the undisputed star: skeletons converge on the target and each volatile skeleton explosion amplifies the next by 10%, up to 300% bonus damage. Skeleton Mage at rank 15 with the Coven upgrade periodically grants Ferocity, Resolve, or Overpower, and shadow mode generates a shield worth 37% of maximum Life for all your minions. Skeleton Warrior at rank 15 with the "Service and Sacrifice" upgrade sacrifices itself on command to explode on enemies, reforming immediately from available corpses.

The GolemGolem at rank 14 with Fel Gluttony consumes corpses to generate Overpower stacks and grant Unstoppable when activated — making it both a survival tool and an offensive buff generator. Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils at rank 1 is sufficient to gain its bonus Critical Strike Chance, make enemies Vulnerable, and Fortify instantly. Iron MaidenIron Maiden at rank 1 with the Blood Maiden upgrade regenerates Essence when cursing, triggers Ferocity and Overpower on Lucky Hit, and generates the precious blood orbs. Finally, DecrepifyDecrepify at rank 1 with Vital Draw heals on contact with affected enemies and reduces the cooldowns of GolemGolem and Corpse TendrilsCorpse Tendrils.

Mercenary S13

Raheir is the ideal mercenary for this build. His main contribution is the resistance and armor bonus he provides, along with a 15 to 25% damage multiplier. His signature skills "Ground Strike" and BastionBastion make him effective at taunting enemies and absorbing a portion of incoming damage in your place, perfectly complementing the defensive side of the build without sacrificing offensive power.

As reinforcement, Aldkin is selected for his Storm of FireStorm of Fire skill, which adds extra AoE damage during high-activity moments. This reinforcement triggers frequently given the pace of your curse and summon skill usage.

Paragon

The build uses 5 Paragon Boards with all Glyphs at rank 150, forming a cascade of multipliers that push Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead damage into astronomical territory. The starting board is equipped with the EliminatorEliminator Glyph (32 nodes allocated), a universal foundation that provides solid bonuses right from the start.

The BloodbathBloodbath board is equipped with the EssenceEssence Glyph (76 nodes allocated), the most loaded of all. This Glyph interacts directly with Overpower stacks: each active stack grants 20% damage, and gaining or losing a stack adds 50% damage for a few seconds — a total of 70% multiplier in constant flux with our Overpower generation/consumption cycle. The critical bonus also applies to Army of the DeadArmy of the Dead.

The Flesh-eaterFlesh-eater board with the AmplifyAmplify Glyph (62 nodes allocated) amplifies damage from corpse consumption and damage from your summoned mages — two central aspects of the build. The FrailtyFrailty board with CorporealCorporeal (55 nodes allocated) provides increased physical damage and Movement Speed, with bonus damage against cursed enemies on top. Finally, the Scent of DeathScent of Death board with the DominateDominate Glyph (69 nodes allocated) is particularly powerful here: it grants damage per active Overpower stack, and each new Overpower charge triggers a 12% damage bonus for 5 seconds. P4wnyhof's advice is to max Willpower on this board to extract the maximum benefit.
