Build Overview

The Abyss Shadow Speed Warlock is the definitive Warlock build for Season 13: Lord of Hatred. Designed by Rob2628, one of the most renowned Diablo 4 theorycrafters, it leverages the explosive synergy between Dread Claws and Nether Step to blaze through dungeons at phenomenal speed while maintaining devastating AoE DPS. The core mechanic revolves around generating Wrath via Sigil of Subversion, which continuously fuels the damage of Metamorphosis and the buffs of Profane Sentinel.

Progression is divided into three distinct phases: a leveling phase centered on BaneBane and Terror Swarm for fast clearing, a Starter phase (P0-190) introducing Soulbrand and Temerity for survivability, and finally a Mythic endgame phase (P200+) built around Heir of Perdition, Ring of Starless Skies, and El'druin, Sword of Justice to reach peak damage output. The full set of aspects — notably the Insidious Aspect, the Malicious Aspect, and the Aspect of Fathomless Dark — amplify the attack rate of Dread Claws and maximize every critical strike.

This build excels particularly in high-difficulty Abysses (T4/T5) and Eras of Hatred thanks to its exceptional Movement Speed and ability to stack Vulnerable effects and critical strikes on numerous targets simultaneously. It is also an excellent choice for players looking to efficiently farm the infernal worlds introduced by the Lord of Hatred expansion.

Strengths and Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Exceptional Movement Speed thanks to Nether Step and Aspect of Impetus
  • Excellent AoE damage via Dread Claws and Terror Swarm
  • Progressive power scaling that is accessible from leveling with BaneBane
  • Mythic endgame among the strongest available for the Warlock thanks to Heir of Perdition
  • Excellent Talisman synergy (Shadow of Harash set) for the late game
  • Ultra-fast farming of seasonal content (Eras of Hatred, Abysses)

❌ Weaknesses

  • Wrath management is tricky early on before affix optimization
  • Dependent on Metamorphosis — phases without the buff can be fragile
  • Mythic items are difficult to obtain: Ring of Starless Skies is a significant investment
  • Demanding positioning against elites and Bosses at high density
  • Mercenary Subo requires good placement mastery to maximize Wire TrapWire Trap

During the leveling phase, gear consists of legendary items quickly targeting the Juggernaut's AspectJuggernaut's Aspect (helm) and the Aspect of MightAspect of Might (chest). Boots receive the Aspect of Impetus to maximize Movement Speed, while the shield equips the Edgemaster's AspectEdgemaster's Aspect. The Yax and Gar runes on the helm, and Cir/Que on the chest, accelerate your power ramp-up from the very first hours of play.

During the Starter phase (P0-190), two uniques make their appearance: Soulbrand in the chest (with Willpower and Maximum Resource as Greater Affixes) and Temerity in the pants (Wrath Regeneration). The Aspect of Arrogance on the main weapon and the Aspect of Fathomless Dark on ring 1 complete the picture, with the Enfeebling Aspect on gloves to apply Vulnerable to targets.

In the Mythic endgame (P200+), three exceptional items transform the build: Heir of Perdition in the helm (with the Cir and Thul runes), Ring of Starless Skies on ring 1, and El'druin, Sword of Justice as the main weapon. The Aspect of Inner CalmAspect of Inner Calm moves to the gloves, and the Insidious Aspect settles on the amulet (Ranks to All Skills as a Greater Affix). The Malicious Aspect remains on ring 2 with Critical Strike Damage Multiplier and Critical Strike Chance as Greater Affixes.

Horadric Seal S13

The Talisman system introduced in Season 13 adds an unprecedented layer of customization to the Warlock. This build leverages the Shadow of Harash set across five charm slots, complemented by the unique charm Seed of Horazon in the central slot.

Charms — Shadow of Harash Set (5/6)

  • Slot 0 — Fer of Harash's Shadow (Shadow of Harash Set) — Stats: Maximum Resource · Abyss Skill Ranks
  • Slot 1 — Linta of Harash's Shadow (Shadow of Harash Set) — Stats: Maximum Resource · Demonology Skill Ranks
  • Slot 2 — Beru of Harash's Shadow (Shadow of Harash Set) — Stats: Maximum Resource · Abyss Skill Ranks
  • Slot 3 — Seed of Horazon (Unique) — Your Demonology Skills deal x[0.4-0.5%] increased damage per Wrath you possess, and you take +[0.13-0.16%] reduced damage per Dominance you possess
  • Slot 4 — Mlor of Harash's Shadow (Shadow of Harash Set) — Stats: Maximum Resource · Abyss Skill Ranks
  • Slot 5 — Phoba of Harash's Shadow (Shadow of Harash Set) — Stats: Maximum Resource · Abyss Skill Ranks

Legendary Seal: Critical Strike Damage · +1 Charm Slot · +1 Charm Slot — Primary stat: [45-47.5%] Total Armor

The combination of Seed of Horazon with the five Shadow of Harash pieces generates a permanent power loop: the Wrath accumulated via Sigil of Subversion directly amplifies the damage of Demonology Skills such as Profane Sentinel and Metamorphosis, while Dominance simultaneously reduces incoming damage. The legendary seal adds two extra charm slots, bringing the total capacity to 8 charms and maximizing the Shadow of Harash set bonuses.

Gameplay Tips

Basic rotation: Activate Sigil of Subversion to generate Wrath, cast Dread Claws on enemy groups, then use Nether Step to reposition. Profane Sentinel maintains the Vulnerable state permanently, which multiplies your critical strike damage.

Wrath management: The Wrath resource is the engine of this build. Every use of Sigil of Subversion generates Wrath, and the Aspect of Fathomless Dark increases the number of targets hit by Dread Claws based on your Wrath stockpile. Make sure you never run out — the Gar and Cir runes on the helm help maintain the gauge during the leveling phase.

Using Metamorphosis: Metamorphosis is your survival and burst tool. Trigger it before elite packs or Bosses to benefit from the Phase 2 bonus, then chain Dread Claws and Terror Swarm to maximize damage during the activation window. The Insidious Aspect effectively extends the useful duration of the transformation.

Speed and mobility: The Aspect of Impetus on boots combined with Nether Step (with the Movement Speed upgrade) makes this build one of the fastest in the game. Take advantage of the mobility to always stay in motion, encircle groups, and trigger the Encircling Terror bonus of Dread Claws.

Transitioning to Starter (P0-190): As soon as you obtain Soulbrand and Temerity, replace the Aspect of MightAspect of Might and the Protecting AspectProtecting Aspect respectively. Add Sigil of Subversion to your skill bar and reconfigure the upgrades of Dread Claws toward Cascading Dread and Ambush for better AoE coverage. The Aspect of Arrogance (also known as Conceited Aspect) on the main weapon becomes your primary critical strike damage multiplier.

Talent Tree

The Warlock S13 talent tree is organized around six categories: Basic, Core, Defensive, Archfiend, Sigil, and Ultimate. During leveling, priority goes to BaneBane (rank 1 with the Wrath, Echo, and Contagion upgrades) and Dread Claws (maxed to 15/15 with Damage, Ambush, and Encircling Terror). Nether Step and Terror Swarm complete the four active skills during leveling.

In the Starter and endgame phases, BaneBane and Terror Swarm give way to Profane Sentinel (8/15, with Vulnerable, Focused Glare, and Wide Beam upgrades), Sigil of Subversion (15/15, with Movement Speed, Infiltration Trails, and Cast Range upgrades), and Metamorphosis (15/15, with Damage Scaling, Terror Demon, and Phase 2 Enrage upgrades). Dread Claws and Nether Step both remain at their maximum rank with their respective upgrades reconfigured for the scaling phase.

Mercenary S13

The recommended mercenary is Subo, the nomadic archer introduced in Season 13. His signature skill Wire TrapWire Trap immobilizes enemies in a defined area, allowing Dread Claws to fully exploit the Encircling Terror bonus on frozen targets. His second skill, Cover FireCover Fire, provides continuous ranged support and can trigger critical strikes on enemies already weakened by Profane Sentinel.

Position Subo ahead of your movement path so the traps are already in place when you arrive with Nether Step. This placement synergizes perfectly with the build's speed and ensures enemy groups are slowed or stopped before you pass through with Metamorphosis.

Paragon

The Mythic endgame Paragon tree (P200+) revolves around five optimized boards, each with a level 100 Glyph to maximize Wrath, Dominance, and Abyss damage bonuses:

Starter Board
AbyssalAbyssal
Level 100 · 45 nodes
Dominion
Demonologist
Level 100 · 65 nodes
Greater Hex
DestructionDestruction
Level 100 · 57 nodes
Dynamism
MastermindMastermind
Level 100 · 66 nodes
Ritualism
EliminatorEliminator
Level 100 · 68 nodes

The Starter Board with the AbyssalAbyssal Glyph lays the foundation of the damage loop, directly amplifying Abyss-category skills like Dread Claws. Dominion and its Demonologist Glyph multiply the damage of Demonology Skills, including Profane Sentinel and Metamorphosis. Greater Hex brings the DestructionDestruction Glyph for a massive critical strike damage bonus, while Dynamism with MastermindMastermind optimizes resource management. Finally, Ritualism and the EliminatorEliminator Glyph complete the picture with 68 allocated nodes, bringing the total to 301 Paragon nodes. All five boards reach their full potential starting from Paragon 200, which corresponds to the recommended threshold for transitioning to full Mythic gear.
