ENDGAME | PIT PUSH PALADIN
Build Overview
The Thorns Paladin establishes itself in Season 13 as one of the most formidable builds for pit pushing and single-target Boss fights. Its principle is as simple as it is relentless: take hits, stack Resolve, and return damage as massive Thorns through
Blessed Shield. Where other builds exhaust themselves spamming skills, this Paladin lets enemies destroy themselves against a wall of iron.
The core mechanic relies on the Shield of Retribution upgrade attached to
Blessed Shield, which transforms each throw into an AoE Thorns pulse. Combined with
Ward of the White Dove, each cast multiplies damage by 77. The mythic helmet
Heir of Perdition further amplifies critical hits, while
Mantle of the Grey multiplies every point of Resolve consumed. This build is the king of single target: it comfortably reaches pit 125-126, and its single-Boss DPS surpasses every other S-TIER build of the season.
For players who want to push high in Torment 12 without worrying about complex rotations, this is the ideal build.
Fortress with the Rampart of Thorns upgrade also provides a permanent AoE Thorns zone around the anchor point, turning every elite pack into kindling.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Exceptional single-target DPS — superior to other S-TIER builds of Season 13 for pit pushing and Boss fights
- Extraordinary survivability through block chance stacking, DR via Aspect of the Unyielding and
Aspect of Redirected Force - Fully automatic Thorns mechanic — no stressful skill spamming, the build almost plays itself
- Excellent for pit pushing up to confirmed tier 125-126 in Torment 12
- Passive area control via
Fortress and its Rampart of Thorns upgrade that permanently radiates AoE
Cons
- Clear speed inferior to more mobile builds such as Wing Strikes or Hammer builds
- Limited mobility: no evade spam or built-in movement, the Paladin stays anchored in place
- Demanding setup: requires "Max Resolve Charges" tempers on as many slots as possible for the scaling to be fully effective
- Less competitive in fast group play where enemies die before they can strike back

Loot Table
The
Heir of Perdition stands out as the essential mythic helmet: it provides +20% critical strike chance, +20% Lucky Hit chance, and a massive damage boost against demons and angels — a perfect synergy with Torment 12 density. For players struggling to survive in very high pit tiers, the Harlequin Crest can serve as a defensive alternative by providing CDR and universal bonuses.
The
Mantle of the Grey on the chest is non-negotiable: it enlarges the area of effect of Relentless Avatar skills and, crucially, multiplies damage for each point of Resolve consumed — up to 6× bonus per spent stack, making it the build's primary damage lever.
On the gloves,
Aspect of Redirected Force converts block chance into critical damage through a multiplier that explodes each time you block a hit — up to 120× in theory. The pants with the Aspect of the Unyielding complete the defensive loop by converting that same block chance into damage reduction. On the boots,
Aspect of Dominance generates Resolve every time you apply a CC effect to an enemy — which triggers continuously through the
Blessed Shield pulses.
The
Ring of Starless Skies (mythic ring) provides additional attack speed and critical strike chance.
Atonement on the second ring multiplies damage against Bosses and CC'd enemies. The amulet carries the
Aspect of Lapa's Scripture, which generates additional Thorns for each stack of Resolve lost — up to 20 simultaneous charges, each contributing to the
Blessed Shield pulse.
The legendary weapon equipped with the
Aspect of the Juggernaut's Covenant is the final major multiplier: up to 100× damage based on Resolve charges consumed. Finally, the unique shield
Ward of the White Dove is the heart of the mechanic: each cast of
Blessed Shield deals up to 77× Thorns damage, and casting another skill immediately after doubles this bonus once more.
For the Horadric Seal, the Herald of Zakarum (unique charm) provides Strength, Resistances, and Armor — perfect for consolidating survivability in high Torment. As an alternative, especially for very difficult pit tiers, Enduring Faith offers a valuable one-shot prevention
Ward.
Horadric Seal S13
The build uses the Just Will 5/5 set (Phoba, Iron, Mlor, Linta and Beru of Just Will), whose full bonus triggers a massive multiplier against Bosses and enemies that cannot be affected by CC — which corresponds exactly to pit pushing situations against high-tier Guardians. The 5/5 bonus also includes a damage reduction that scales with active Resolve, further amplifying survivability during critical phases. The sixth slot is occupied by the unique charm Herald of Zakarum, which reinforces armor, resistances, and base Strength. The priority central seal is Critical Damage, or failing that Critical Strike Chance if the first is unavailable.
Gameplay Tips
The rotation revolves around permanent spamming of
Blessed Shield, which is your main source of damage through Thorns pulses. Keep
Aegis active at all times to maintain maximum block chance, the direct source of your damage multipliers via
Aspect of Redirected Force and the Aspect of the Unyielding. Place
Fortress as soon as you engage a pack or face a Boss: the Rampart of Thorns upgrade creates a passive Thorns zone around the anchor point, dealing continuous damage to any enemy that approaches. Use
Defiance Aura to trigger the
Rite of Thorns upgrade, which adds an immediate AoE Thorns burst on press — ideal as an opener on dense packs.
To maximize Resolve, equip "Max Resolve Charges" tempers on as many slots as possible: the higher the Resolve cap, the greater the proportional damage burst from each consumption. The
Sentinel glyph has no cap — every active stack directly contributes to damage, making it the build's most important scaling source. Keep
Fanaticism Aura active at all times: it maximizes your resource and its Rite of Vengeance upgrade increases damage. Also remember to move slightly every 2-3 seconds to maintain the movement bonus from the Relentless board.
Against high-tier Bosses, adopt a static positioning: stay in melee range so that
Blessed Shield pulses consistently hit the target. Use
Clash to quickly generate Resolve between
Blessed Shield charges. Don't panic if your health drops briefly: the combination of block chance + DR via
Aegis + Aspect of the Unyielding restores survivability almost instantly on the next block.
Skill Tree
Mercenary S13
Subo is the main mercenary. His skills
Cover Fire and Wire Trap synergize perfectly with the tank Paladin:
Cover Fire continuously increases critical damage, which stacks directly with the scaling of
Aspect of Redirected Force, while the traps slow enemies and keep them within the
Fortress zone.
As reinforcement, Varyana with
Blood-drinker is recommended by @RageGamingVideos for Boss burst — the skill amplifies total damage during critical combat windows. If Varyana is not yet unlocked, Cleave is an acceptable default reinforcement until the unlock is completed.
Paragon
The paragon path is built around five boards designed to amplify Thorns, block chance, and critical damage. The first board Start with the
Revenge glyph boosts adjacent rare nodes and adds a Thorns-based damage multiplier — the foundation of early scaling. The Relentless board and its
Spirit glyph deliver massive critical damage gated by movement, which is why you should never remain completely static. The third board Beacon with
Chip amplifies physical damage, the primary category for this Thorns build.
The Castle board with the
Sentinel glyph is the most important for progression: its damage scales on every active Resolve stack, with no cap. The more "Max Resolve Charges" tempers you stack, the more dominant this glyph becomes. Finally, the Shield Bearer board with
Outmatch completes the loop by awarding a damage bonus proportional to block chance and adding an extra AoE against elites.
The Resolve Loop
Resolve is the pivot resource of the entire build. It is generated via
Clash (Resolution upgrade), via
Aspect of Dominance on the boots (generated on every CC applied — the
Blessed Shield pulses continuously apply CC), and via the Just Will 5/5 set from the Horadric Seal. Every accumulated Resolve stack directly feeds the
Sentinel glyph (Castle board) which has no contribution cap. Consuming the charges then triggers the
Aspect of the Juggernaut's Covenant (up to 100× damage per consumed stack) and the
Aspect of Lapa's Scripture (Thorns per lost stack, up to 20 simultaneously). The absolute itemization priority is therefore to maximize the charge cap through dedicated tempers on as many equipment slots as possible, since this cap determines the magnitude of each damage burst.
Pulsing Thorns
The Thorns mechanic in this build does not rely on a standard passive effect: it is actively triggered and amplified by every cast of
Blessed Shield. The Shield of Retribution upgrade transforms each throw into an AoE Thorns pulse centered on the Paladin, automatically dealing damage to any enemy in contact.
Ward of the White Dove multiplies this damage by 77 on each cast, and if you cast another skill immediately after (for example
Clash or
Fanaticism Aura), this multiplier is doubled a second time. In parallel, keeping
Defiance Aura active with the
Rite of Thorns upgrade creates a permanent aura of additional Thorns that fires instantly on every press, ideal for opening on dense packs. The combination of both sources — active pulses from
Blessed Shield and the passive aura of
Defiance Aura — produces constant and massive Thorns DPS that gives Torment 12 Bosses no chance.
