Build Overview

The Zeal Paladin was long considered a fun but limited build compared to the strongest Paladin options of the season. @MrRonit solved this by merging the strengths of the Clash Paladin with the ZealZeal mechanic: the result is an endgame build that is extremely tanky, clears Pit 115 without dying, and effortlessly wipes out all Torment 12 content. With further optimized gear, MrRonit confirms that Pit 120+ is achievable — a remarkable feat for a build centered on ZealZeal.

The core mechanic of the build revolves around stacking Resolve. MrRonit accumulates over 55 Resolve stacks through gear tempering and several aspects, simultaneously boosting both offensive and defensive capabilities. The unique weapon Red SermonRed Sermon is essential: it grants the Death and Glory enhancement to ZealZeal for free, increasing critical strike chance and critical damage in exchange for a life cost on each cast. This cost is offset by the Holy Light AuraHoly Light Aura, ConsecrationConsecration to Fortify, and the Embattled Aspect which further accelerates fortified life regeneration. The combination of Aspect of Glenn's Anvil with Resolve stacks allows the build to reach over 90% damage reduction, making it nearly indestructible.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Extreme survivability: over 90% damage reduction and 100% block chance cap reached
  • Capable of clearing Pit 115 without dying, and Pit 120+ with optimized gear
  • Powerful scaling through Resolve stacking (55+ stacks, +80% multiplicative damage with the SentinelSentinel glyph)
  • Fast, flashy, and highly enjoyable to play thanks to the ZealZeal rhythm
  • Near-permanent FortressFortress uptime thanks to cooldown reduction combined with the ResplendenceResplendence glyph

Cons

  • The life cost of ZealZeal (Death and Glory enhancement) requires keeping the Embattled Aspect active at all times to stay alive
  • Requires highly optimized gear: Resolve Greater Affixes on armor are essential and difficult to obtain
  • Vulnerable during the short windows when FortressFortress is on cooldown
  • Red SermonRed Sermon is a mandatory unique weapon without which the Death and Glory enhancement is not accessible

The gear objective is twofold: maximize Resolve stacks through tempering and masterworking, and stack critical damage multipliers on key slots.

Helm — Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition: this mythic grants a massive multiplicative damage bonus. MrRonit recommends tempering for maximum Resolve stacks and targeting the same stat with masterwork.

Chest — Tyrael's MightTyrael's Might: provides significant damage reduction and all resistance, essential for surviving Torment 12. Same approach: temper and masterwork for Resolve.

Gloves — Aspect of Jacques' FervorAspect of Jacques' Fervor: grants up to 80% additional multiplicative critical damage. Look for damage multipliers (critical damage, vulnerable, global or physical damage) as well as Strength and critical strike chance. Temper for additive critical damage and target the critical damage multiplier with masterwork.

Pants — Aspect of Glenn's Anvil: the defensive cornerstone of the build. This aspect provides massive damage reduction through Resolve stacking. Look for Strength, maximum life, armor, and resistances. Temper and masterwork for Resolve.

Boots — Embattled Aspect: accelerates the Fortify drain, which compensates for the life cost of ZealZeal. Look for Strength, maximum life, movement speed, and resistances. Temper for movement speed and target Strength with masterwork.

Amulet — Aspect of Redirected ForceAspect of Redirected Force: doubles critical damage when blocking, which with a 100% block chance cap represents 180% critical damage multiplier. Look for damage multipliers (critical damage as priority), vulnerable, global or physical damage, as well as Strength and critical strike chance. Temper and masterwork for Resolve.

Rings — Aspect of the Zealot's CovenantAspect of the Zealot's Covenant and The Penitent's AspectThe Penitent's Aspect: the first boosts Zealot's Oath damage and increases the available stacks to four. The second grants critical strike chance and critical damage when casting ZealZeal. Look for a critical damage multiplier on both rings, along with Strength and critical strike chance. Temper for cooldown reduction and target the critical damage multiplier with masterwork.

Weapon — Red SermonRed Sermon: the mandatory unique. Look for a critical damage multiplier and additional multipliers (vulnerable, global, or physical). Temper for attack speed. If your critical strike chance is insufficient, temper for critical strike chance instead. Target the critical damage multiplier with masterwork.

For gems, MrRonit slots rubies in armor for Strength, a skull in the weapon for the physical damage multiplier, and an emerald, topaz, and ruby in the remaining slots to cover poison, lightning, and fire damage. For runes, the Nagu and Gar combination summons spirit wolves that freeze enemies and apply Vulnerable while providing critical strike chance.

Horadric Seal S13

The build uses the Dauntless Faith talisman set in five pieces. The five-piece bonus grants additional damage to Zealot skills, spawns extra ZealZeal swings whenever the character moves after casting the skill, as well as more critical damage bonus, cast speed, and damage reduction. MrRonit emphasizes one crucial point: re-roll Dauntless Faith talismans until you obtain an extra rank to Zealot skills or to Core skills, as both stats directly increase the rank of ZealZeal, which constitutes an extremely significant multiplicative damage bonus.

The equipped unique charm is the Blood-Mad IdolBlood-Mad Idol, which grants Berserking — 25% additional damage — and additionally converts all incoming damage into Burning while increasing that damage by 200%. While in the Burning state, the build gains an extra 100% multiplicative damage, a phenomenal power made viable by the enormous damage reduction from Aspect of Glenn's Anvil. For players who die too frequently, a more defensive alternative is available, but MrRonit confirms that the Blood-Mad IdolBlood-Mad Idol offers the highest DPS.

Gameplay Tips

The rotation described by @MrRonit revolves around using FortressFortress as the main burst window. Here is the optimal sequence:

1. Cast FortressFortress near enemies to immediately trigger the Resolve stacks it generates every half-second. 2. Activate ConsecrationConsecration and Holy Light AuraHoly Light Aura to Fortify and offset the life cost of ZealZeal. 3. Spam ZealZeal inside FortressFortress to benefit from the Resolve Damage Bonus (4% additional per stack thanks to the Resolve Damage Bonus modifier). 4. Move regularly to activate the Relentless legendary node, which boosts damage and reduces FortressFortress cooldown — standing still for too long significantly extends the cooldown.

When FortressFortress is on cooldown, actively use Defiance AuraDefiance Aura, Holy Light AuraHoly Light Aura, and Fanaticism AuraFanaticism Aura: the ResplendenceResplendence glyph reduces FortressFortress cooldown each time an aura skill is used. By combining cooldown reduction from paragon nodes with this glyph, it is possible to keep FortressFortress active nearly at all times.

Regarding RallyRally: it is not placed on the action bar, but the Dauntless Faith set automatically triggers it every 6 seconds, granting 30% damage reduction and critical strike chance for free. Regarding Resolve stacks, MrRonit identifies two priority levers for progression: maximize Resolve Greater Affixes on armor and the amulet (re-roll until you get a Greater Affix on the temper, then masterwork that same stat), and consistently look for the critical damage multiplier on rings, amulet, gloves, and weapon.

Skill Tree

ZealZeal is maxed at 15/15 with the Extra Strikes and Zealot's Legacy nodes, plus the critical strike chance node. The Death and Glory enhancement is obtained for free through Red SermonRed Sermon.

Fanaticism AuraFanaticism Aura is also at 15/15: it passively grants more critical strike chance and attack speed. The Rightful Vengeance modifier (critical damage bonus and extra passive stack) and Power round out this node. Defiance AuraDefiance Aura also reaches 15/15 for its armor and all resistance bonuses, with the Rightful Might modifier providing additional damage on each Resolve stack gain, along with Maximum Life and Power.

Holy Light AuraHoly Light Aura has only one rank (1/15), as its main purpose is to heal the character when activated. The Rightful Clemency modifier adds a bit of Fortify, supplemented by Extra Bounce and Power. One point is also invested in RallyRally and critical strike chance — even though RallyRally is not on the action bar, it is triggered automatically every 6 seconds by the Dauntless Faith set.

ConsecrationConsecration receives a single point with the Holy Ground modifier (+7% damage) as well as Duration and extra Fortify. Finally, FortressFortress is maxed at 15/15: the higher the rank, the longer its duration. The key modifiers are Barricade (to recast immediately), Free Cast (to use ZealZeal without worrying about resources), and Resolve Damage Bonus (which scales damage with each Resolve stack).

Mercenary S13

Raheir is the active mercenary for this build. He provides additional damage through his inspiration and an extra defensive layer with Raheir's Shield. As reinforcement, Aldkin is chosen for his Field of Languish skill, which forces enemies to deal 20% less damage — a welcome additional damage reduction in high Pits.

Paragon

While leveling up, MrRonit recommends unlocking legendary nodes first before any other investment. The build uses five boards with dedicated glyphs for each strategy.

Starting Board — SentinelSentinel Glyph: the SentinelSentinel glyph is the main damage engine of the build. It grants 1.5% multiplicative damage per Resolve stack, for over 80% multiplier with 55+ stacks. The glyph's close-range damage bonus is also multiplicative. The first legendary node to unlock is Relentless, which provides additional damage and cooldown reduction as long as you keep moving while spamming ZealZeal.

Second Board — ResplendenceResplendence Glyph: this board is rich in cooldown reduction nodes, amplified by the ResplendenceResplendence glyph which reduces FortressFortress cooldown each time an aura skill is used. This is the mechanism that allows approaching 100% uptime on FortressFortress.

Third Board — FerventFervent Node and FeverousFeverous Glyph: the FerventFervent legendary node grants more critical strike chance and critical damage per Fervor stack (up to four permanent stacks, for 140% additional multiplicative damage). The FeverousFeverous glyph further amplifies ZealZeal damage and multipliers per Fervor stack.

Fourth Board — CastleCastle Node and SpiritSpirit Glyph: the CastleCastle legendary node boosts damage based on the armor damage reduction rate, while the SpiritSpirit glyph provides additional critical damage.

Fifth Board — Shield BearerShield Bearer Node and ChipChip Glyph: at first glance, the Shield BearerShield Bearer node may seem modest, but it reaches its maximum of 110% in combat thanks to the Aspect of InterdictionAspect of Interdiction which guarantees 100% block chance. The ChipChip glyph adds multiplicative and additive physical damage to round out the board.
