On the Anaheim stage, Johanna Faries kept a crowd that had hoped for release dates waiting. Instead, she offered a promise. Blizzard's president closed her opening remarks at BlizzCon 2026, on Saturday, September 12, by announcing an animated Diablo Netflix series in development. No title, no release date, no animation studio. Just one line that commits to it: "Diablo, I promise, is just the beginning."
Later in the ceremony, Blizzard slipped in a second, much more concrete announcement: the comic book character Spawn arrives in Diablo Immortal on September 29, with his creator Todd McFarlane as a surprise guest. Two ways of pulling Diablo off the screen, two very different levels of certainty, both covered in the free BlizzCon stream replay for anyone who did not make the trip to Anaheim.
A Diablo Netflix Animated Series, Still No Title or Date
Faries gives no concrete detail about the Diablo Netflix project. No working title, no release window, no animation studio named. She explains why herself: she begged to be allowed to share more on stage, without getting the green light. "While I begged and I pleaded to be able to share more today, I can't spill the beans just yet," she admits.

The context, though, is clearer. On stage, Faries explains that the studio wants to tell its stories beyond video games, on new screens, and says so bluntly: "We are Blizzard Entertainment." The idea is not new for the industry, but it is a first for Diablo: signing a development deal with Netflix to turn a game franchise into a series, not just another piece of merchandise.
"Diablo Is Just the Beginning": Overwatch and Warcraft Next in Line
Faries' line does not stop at Diablo. She then names the Overwatch and Warcraft communities, and adds "perhaps even some of our other universes." Neither project has an announced timeline or partner: Faries speaks of "ongoing discussions," nothing more.

The order is no coincidence. Diablo comes first, and Blizzard already had other Diablo 4 reveals in its back pocket for this BlizzCon, in a year when the franchise turns thirty. Warcraft, named right after, carries twenty years of faction wars, betrayals, and hero storylines. A WoW player knows this better than anyone: there is no shortage of narrative material, and no patch trailer shows a tenth of it in two minutes.
The Shadow of the 2016 Warcraft Movie
Blizzard has already tried its hand outside video games. In 2016, the studio brought Warcraft, a live-action adaptation directed by Duncan Jones, to Western theaters. Critical reception was cold, and the film's commercial success rested mostly on the Chinese market.
The Diablo Netflix bet changes both format and risk. Animation is the format where video game adaptations have done best on Netflix in recent years, with series like Arcane for League of Legends or Castlevania. An animated Diablo costs less to produce than a live-action blockbuster, and renders its demons better than any special-effects budget.
Spawn Arrives in Diablo Immortal on September 29
While the Diablo Netflix story stays vague, the ceremony's other Diablo announcement comes with a firm date. Tiffany Wat confirms on stage, as recapped by Blizzard's Diablo recap, that Spawn arrives in Diablo Immortal on September 29, and warns that Todd McFarlane, the character's creator, will share more in person the next day. "Todd was my first taste of real dark fantasy, and he's inspired an entire generation of storytellers," she says.

On Sunday, September 13, at 10 a.m. Pacific time, McFarlane hosts a live drawing panel alongside Justin Murray to unveil a preview of the crossover. On the Anaheim show floor, a Diablo Immortal tournament runs in parallel, just steps from the Nintendo Switch 2 demo of Diablo IV, set for September 15, the same day the Season of Hell's Legacy opens.
Two Announcements, Two Levels of Certainty
On both fronts, Blizzard did not share the same level of detail. The table below sums up what is confirmed and what is not yet known, based on Blizzard's full list of announcements and the ceremony coverage from Screen Rant.
| Announcement | Confirmed | Not Yet Known |
|---|---|---|
| Animated Diablo series (Netflix) | In development, platform (Netflix), franchise (Diablo) | Title, release date, animation studio, storyline |
| Spawn in Diablo Immortal | Releasing September 29, 2026, Todd McFarlane appearance, panel Sunday September 13 at 10 a.m. PT | Exact nature of the content (skin, event, dedicated mode) |
| Overwatch and Warcraft (other media) | Ongoing discussions confirmed by Johanna Faries | Everything else: platform, format, timeline |
The balance clearly tips toward Diablo Immortal: a precise date, a name, a panel scheduled hour by hour. The Netflix series, for now, rests on a single line spoken on an Anaheim stage, and a promise to share more "as soon as possible."
