Forsaken Kingdom: Warcraft III Campaign, 23 Years Later

Forsaken Kingdom key art: 23 years after launch, Warcraft III unveils a new campaign

« What are you doing, my son? » « I’m succeeding my father. » That line, translated here from one of the cinematics shown on stage, opens Forsaken Kingdom, the new Warcraft III campaign revealed on September 12 at the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim. Twenty-three years after the original game’s release, it’s the first time Blizzard has added a playable storyline to Warcraft III.

The campaign has been available since September 12 on the Battle.net Shop, Blizzard’s digital store, and it’s also playable on the show floor at BlizzCon. It serves as a direct prologue to World of Warcraft: Forever, the « Classic Plus » version Blizzard is launching on November 4. Understanding this new campaign means understanding the starting point chosen for what comes next.

Sylvanas, the Fall of Lordaeron, and the Birth of Undercity

The campaign spans a prologue and three chapters. It follows the Forsaken breaking free of the Scourge’s grip, with Sylvanas Windrunner as the central figure. The story covers the fall of Lordaeron and the founding of Undercity, the city carved into the sewers and catacombs beneath the fallen capital. A new neutral hero joins the campaign’s roster of playable heroes, the Forsaken Paladin. The choice says exactly what this campaign is about: coming back to life as undead.

One scene sums up the tone of the campaign. A father asks his son what he’s doing, and the son answers that he’s succeeding him, this time on the side of the undead. Another line from the cinematic puts it bluntly. Death isn’t an ending here, only a beginning.

Forsaken Kingdom Comes With a Free Definitive Edition

The release comes with a « Definitive Edition » update to Warcraft III: Reforged, free for everyone who already owns the game. Blizzard announces graphical and performance improvements without detailing their scope. VGC reports a version 3.0, with a revamped level editor (World Editor), a detail the official page we checked does not confirm.

The timing matters twice over here. Back in May, Blizzard had already been forced to walk back Reforged after years of criticism over a remaster that had damaged the base game. Shipping a free Definitive Edition at the exact moment the campaign launches looks like a second attempt at repairing trust, this time with an actual campaign instead of just a patch.

Pack Pricing and the Warcraft Forever Collection

On paper, there are three ways to play it. This campaign is sold on its own on the Battle.net Shop. It’s also included in bundles built around Reforged. And it’s part of the Warcraft Forever Collection, a limited edition available until January 11, 2027, that bundles Reforged, the campaign, and part of WoW Forever’s launch content, including the new Skyborne race, a mount, and cosmetics. None of these prices have been announced, either on the official pages we checked or during the ceremony.

Why This Campaign Arrives Right Before WoW Forever

The timeline isn’t a marketing coincidence. The story ends with the fall of Lordaeron and the birth of Undercity. WoW Forever picks up exactly at that point in the story, one year before Molten Core opens. Blizzard is building a continuous narrative bridge between a 2002 game and an MMO meant to run for years without an expansion, with a level 60 cap treated as permanent by design.

Rumors about this Classic Plus had been circulating for months before Holly Longdale confirmed the name on stage. Making the campaign playable as a preamble, show floor included, follows the same logic as the free stream opened for this BlizzCon. Giving players a concrete taste before the November 4 launch counts for more than a promise on a slide.

What It’s Worth, Seen From the Battlefield

From this side of the screen, the question isn’t whether the story is well told. Warcraft has always had solid campaign writing. It’s whether a prologue and three chapters are enough to make people forget years where Reforged mostly worked as an argument against Blizzard, not for it. A prologue and three chapters isn’t a full game. It’s a playable teaser, not a resurrection.

The bet works if WoW Forever really delivers what it promises, a server frozen at level 60 that lives through updates instead of expansions. The real test happens at the September 17 beta, not at BlizzCon. The campaign will have done its job if the players who finished it arrive on November 4 still thinking about Lordaeron and Undercity.
