On October 26, 2018, Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2. Eight years later, on PS5 and Xbox Series, the game still runs at 30 frames per second, and no 60 fps version has been announced. On August 7, 2026, Insider Gaming relayed a figure from Take-Two’s results: more than 87 million units for Red Dead Redemption 2. Meanwhile, a rumour about an enhanced edition has been circulating for over a year, without any confirmation.
Red Dead Redemption 2: 87 million units, a figure to read with caution
Insider Gaming’s Sam Sepiol reports that the Red Dead series is closing in on 116 million units worldwide, including more than 87 million for the second game alone. The same piece ranks the game third among the best-selling titles in the US over the past eight years. The number climbs fast: Vice quoted 85 million in May 2026, at the time of the previous earnings call. The gap is about 2 million more units in one quarter, for a 2018 game that has received no new console edition.

This number calls for a caveat. Insider Gaming’s article does not say whether these are copies bought by players or units shipped to retailers. Take-Two generally talks about « sold-in » units, meaning units shipped to stores and platforms, not necessarily rung up at the till. We could not find the original release to settle it. So treat 87 million as an order of magnitude for distribution, not a count of players.
What Rockstar has announced: nothing
Rockstar has made no statement about a 60 fps patch, or about a native PS5 or Xbox Series version of Red Dead Redemption 2. On these consoles, the game runs through backward compatibility (the ability to launch a game from the previous generation) and stays locked at 30 frames per second. The earlier entry in the series did get its upgrade: the first Red Dead Redemption was announced for PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 on November 13, 2025, 19 days before its release, according to the count by Pasquale Pillitteri. Rockstar knows how to announce at short notice.
Tweaks that unlock 60 fps exist on modified PS5s. We do not recommend them and we do not detail them. Be wary too of sites promising a « free 60 fps patch »: Rockstar has released none.
A 60 fps version: rumours, nothing more
On October 5, 2025, Olly Smith reported in GamingBible that Rockstar had reportedly edited the game’s Steam description, removing the list of awards in favour of a simpler summary. An X user, Synth Potato, saw it as preparation for a PS5 and Xbox Series re-release. The journalist himself uses the conditional and points out that nothing is confirmed.

The second pillar of the rumour is the insider NateTheHate. According to Pasquale Pillitteri’s recap, dated October 19, 2026, he claimed in June 2025 that a next-generation update was coming, with a Switch 2 port within the year. Neither has shipped. In October 2025, after the Steam page edit, he said these versions existed, with no date. In February 2026, asked about a slip to 2027, he answered that as far as he knew, the game was coming out in 2026. On June 24, 2026, he suggested plans may have changed once GTA 6 got its date. Another name keeps coming up, Reece « Kiwi Talkz » Reilly, who later described his own remarks as « educated guesses ».
These accounts contradict each other on timing and none provides proof. A Switch 2 version postponed until after GTA 6, sometimes mentioned, rests on no source we could verify: we are not retaining it.
GTA 6 on November 19, and Red Dead Redemption 2 stepping back
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series. On May 21, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed that date during the earnings call, as reported by Brent Koepp for Vice: « I think reiterating November 19 as a launch day today is probably a positive. » The same article says GTA 5 is nearing 230 million units and Red Dead Redemption 2 is at 85 million as of that date.

For a publisher betting its season on a single game, a Red Dead Redemption 2 re-release in the weeks before launch would be internal competition. That reading remains a deduction: no source confirms it. It does match the idea put forward by NateTheHate in June that the schedule may have shifted. If a 60 fps version exists, its date remains unknown.
Our GTA 6 articles from recent weeks give the context: the signals around the reviews, the latest trailer and the 25-minute leak. As for Red Dead Redemption 2, the last word belongs to Rockstar, which has said nothing.
