Build Overview

This druid build Grim PillarsGrim Pillars centers on a war skill introduced in patch 0.5, socketed into a Spell TotemSpell Totem. The trick fits in one line: a totem consumes neither mana, life, nor war. Grim PillarsGrim Pillars therefore runs for free, on a loop, while you’re busy doing something else.

The skill’s direct damage is decent, nothing more. The real engine is the ice crystals it leaves on the ground. Any skill that consumes freeze detonates them instantly, and that’s where EntangleEntangle comes in, paired with Biting Frost IBiting Frost I as a support gem. An EntangleEntangle left at level 1, which costs next to nothing in mana, is enough to trigger the chain reaction. No crystal health stat to optimize, no timing to work out: you drop it, it detonates.

The second pillar comes from the 0.5 totem rework. The Ancestral BondAncestral Bond keystone doubles the totem limit and removes charge consumption: no more power charges or endurance charges to maintain. You drop them on the move and reposition them at will. With nearly 400 spirit, six totems stay up permanently.

Palsteron calls it the best league start he’s ever played in Path of Exile 2, campaign included. The full progression of this Grim PillarsGrim Pillars druid build is documented in his written guide on Maxroll and in a Path of Building, from level 1 all the way to hundreds of divines invested.

Strengths / Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Fast campaign clear: the Plants setup carries you solo up to level 30-40, and switching to totems speeds things up even further.
  • Totems placed on the move, with no charge cost since the Ancestral BondAncestral Bond rework in 0.5.
  • Absurd damage for a laughably low mana cost: the crystals chain-detonate with a level 1 EntangleEntangle.
  • Defensive playstyle: you place, you back off, and the totems tank for you.
  • Scalable progression: a Life-based version available right after the campaign, and an Energy Shield version at 8,000 once your budget allows.
  • Two fewer buttons to press in the endgame once Rakiatas FlowRakiatas Flow is in place.

❌ Weaknesses

  • Hinges on one gem: Grim PillarsGrim Pillars doesn’t show up before level 22 and is pricey during the first days of the league.
  • Tight on mana until gem levels are dialed in and the Efficient Casting instill is missing.
  • Gem levels to track down to the last point: Spell TotemSpell Totem 14, EntangleEntangle 1, Frost BombFrost Bomb and Elemental WeaknessElemental Weakness 18.
  • Hardware-hungry: the sheer number of on-screen effects will strain lower-end setups.

Recommended Equipment

The stat priority doesn’t change from the campaign to the endgame: levels of Cold Spell Skills first, then spell damage and elemental damage, cast speed, and totem placement speed. Critical strike chance only enters the equation after the third ascendancy.

  • Sceptre: the centerpiece, and not just for Spirit. Aim for a Purity-type implicit (fire, lightning or cold): these sceptres let you socket as many Spirit supports as you want without ever paying their cost. That’s how you stack an extra 40% spell damage, mana regeneration, and the rest. Patch bonus: the sceptre can six-link without requiring level 20.
  • Wand: levels of Cold Spell Skills above all, because a +5 roughly doubles the damage. Then cast speed, then critical strike chance once you’ve taken the third ascendancy.
  • Amulet: up to 65 Spirit on a solar amulet, plus spell levels. The aspirational tier then shifts to a stellar amulet. The Efficient Casting instill (20% mana cost efficiency) unlocks through the Withered Willow Delirium questline, in front of the fortress entrance, after killing five bosses in the fog.
  • Body Armour: in the Life version, stack life, mana, resistances and Spirit (up to 61 as a prefix). In the Energy Shield version, you need at least 650 Energy Shield while still keeping Spirit on the same piece. This is the hardest item to find in the build.
  • Helmet: almost as decisive as the body armour in the Energy Shield version, with a passive tree node specifically increasing the shield gained from the helmet.
  • Gloves and boots: movement speed is non-negotiable on the boots, then 200 to 250 Energy Shield on each piece.
  • Belt: Darkness EnthronedDarkness Enthroned, but crucially the variant that « gains the bonuses of Socketed Items as though they were a Body Armour ». Socketed Items there get their effect boosted by up to 100%, which is more than enough for shield recharge speed. With rune of the blossom socketed inside, the Spirit penalty per level tier rounds down to -1 and stays fixed while the bonus keeps climbing: still around 49 Spirit at level 100.
  • Jewels: critical damage bonus and critical spell damage in the Life version. In the Energy Shield version, they also become defensive: up to 20% maximum shield, and two to three copies with faster recharge start.
  • Void Flux: this new item converts a piece’s other resistances into chaos resistance. The easiest way to cap it early, keeping in mind that the conversion loses a tier along the way and implicits don’t move.
  • Charms: Silver against slows, Stone against stuns, Nascent HopeNascent Hope, which costs next to nothing. The finished build ends up replacing the first two with The Fall of the Axe and Rite of Passage.
  • Lineage gems: Voranas SiegeVoranas Siege stays affordable and gives 20% more damage against isolated targets, so against bosses. Rakiatas FlowRakiatas Flow goes past 100 divines and deserves its own section below.

Gameplay Tips

  • Gem level is a mechanic, not a detail. Spell TotemSpell Totem needs to land exactly on 14, the breakpoint that takes you from one totem to two. EntangleEntangle stays at level 1. Frost BombFrost Bomb and Elemental WeaknessElemental Weakness cap at 18, the threshold beyond which they gain nothing more and turn into mana sponges. Gear’s global levels count toward the total: a Spell TotemSpell Totem carved at level 10 with +4 from gear lands right at 14.
  • Mana Tempest activates after you’ve placed your totems, never before. The effect lingers four seconds after the cloud fades, and the totems benefit from it passively. If you activate it first, everything you cast afterward drains your mana bar for nothing.
  • Grim Pillars levels up through Thaumaturgic Flux, not through regular raw gems, and the operation is irreversible. Check your level before applying it: 18 requires level 78, 19 requires level 84, 20 requires level 90.
  • Aim for 300% placement speed. The stat doesn’t factor into any damage calculation, but it speeds up both your character’s animation and the totem’s rise from the ground. That’s what separates a smooth build from a sluggish one.
  • Lock both weapons into both weapon sets before touching the weapon set passives. Without this lock, Spirit fluctuates on weapon swap and your totems un-summon themselves on their own.
  • Totems are not minions. They don’t benefit from any minion modifier: they count as you. Your 24% cast speed from a ring benefits them in full, and 15% totem damage is worth exactly 15% elemental damage; the only difference is that the specialized version rolls higher.
  • Turn on dynamic culling in the graphics options. This build loads the screen heavily, and this one setting alone makes a real difference on a modest machine.

Spirit: the build’s real constraint

How many totems you place depends neither on your level nor your damage: it depends on your Spirit. Each totem reserves 75, brought down to 63 with Efficient InscriptionsEfficient Inscriptions. Six totems therefore require close to 400 Spirit, a figure you only reach late in progression.

The total builds up in layers. Campaign quests give you the first 100. The sceptre realistically brings 150 to 210, by far the biggest source, and the reason this piece dictates everything else. A solar amulet adds up to 65, a chest prefix up to 61, and inscriptions fill the remaining gap at a steep price.

On the gem side, the count works differently: Spell TotemSpell Totem only allows one totem by default, two at level 14, and Unnamed HeartwoodUnnamed Heartwood adds the third. Ancestral BondAncestral Bond doubles the total, which gives you the cap of six. There’s no point pushing Spell TotemSpell Totem higher than 14: its level only dictates the totem’s resistance, and the ascendancy renders that resistance moot.

Oracle Ascendancy: four nodes, four effects

Oracle is the ascendancy that makes this build possible, and each of its four nodes serves a distinct function.

  • The Unseen Path unlocks passives that other classes can’t reach: a cluster of totem nodes, movement speed nodes, and a particularly nasty block of increased damage. Take it as the absolute priority: it’s also what makes leveling comfortable.
  • The Lesser Harm is the lukewarm node of the bunch. Its defensive value is real but modest; you mostly take it because it opens the path to the third one. There’s no rush to reach the second lab.
  • Forced Outcome guarantees the critical strike by re-rolling until it lands, at the cost of part of the multiplier. This is the node that unlocks the shift toward critical strikes, and it comes with a counter-intuitive consequence: the sweet spot sits between 30 and 40% critical strike chance, not higher.
  • Unnamed Heartwood keeps totems alive for six seconds after their life hits zero. In practice, they no longer die, which frees the Spell TotemSpell Totem from any level requirement and eases the mana cost.

Grim Pillars Druid build progression: from Plants to totems

You don’t start the league with Grim PillarsGrim Pillars. The gem doesn’t drop until level 22, and since it can’t be leveled down, nobody can resell theirs to players leveling behind them. Most find it organically through the league mechanic, somewhere between levels 30 and 40.

Until then, the Plants setup carries the early game. The first levels run on charged VolcanoVolcano and Frost BombFrost Bomb to weaken enemies. Bone CageBone Cage arrives at level 6 with Spell CascadeSpell Cascade: strong single target if you pick your moments, since it means closing the distance. The real shift happens at level 14 with BonestormBonestorm, charged fully then released on contact. Beyond a certain range, some of the projectiles are lost.

BonestormBonestorm applies ImpaleImpale, which needs to be consumed to get anything out of it. That’s where ThunderstormThunderstorm comes in with Living LightningLiving Lightning: the summons that appear above enemies consume the stacks and unleash a considerable amount of damage. Accelerated GrowthAccelerated Growth around level 18, then Thrashing VinesThrashing Vines, round out the picture. ThunderstormThunderstorm remains the glue holding the whole setup together: it buffs BonestormBonestorm and waters the plants.

The switch to totems takes three things. The Grim PillarsGrim Pillars gem, obviously. A decent sceptre with maximum Spirit. And on the passive tree, Ancestral BondAncestral Bond (without it, totems consume charges), plus the first placement speed nodes, which add up to 70%. When buying, the gem’s price depends on its level requirement: a high-level copy costs five times less than one playable early, since everyone wants to level with it. Sticking with Plants until level 52 cuts the bill by ten.

One reflex at respec time: your EntangleEntangle is high level and costs a lot of mana, even though it’s now only used to detonate crystals. Craft a fresh one at level 1. Its quality, though, is worth the investment: the chance to create an extra fissure is the first or second quality point worth putting into the build.

Weapon set passives: 24 points that change everything

After the campaign, you have 24 weapon set passive points. On the tree, red marks weapon set 1, green marks weapon set 2. Instead of spending these points generically, we specialize: weapon set 1 for totems, weapon set 2 for everything else.

The setup takes three steps. First, lock both weapons into both slots: right-click on each one, the shadow in the background confirms the action. Next, tick Spell TotemSpell Totem on weapon set 1 only, and untick weapon set 1 on every other skill. Finally, allocate the 24 points: all the totem nodes in red on one side, cast speed, area of effect, extra crit chance and Arcane SurgeArcane Surge in green on the other.

Your totems then benefit from the totem nodes, while all your other skills gain a block of cast speed that wouldn’t otherwise exist. Arcane SurgeArcane Surge stays active at all times, even while the totems are attacking. Nothing stops you from starting during the campaign with a dozen points, but the tree changes too often at that stage for the juggling to be worth it.

Endgame: energy shield and resistance inversion

The Life version clears the campaign without trouble and takes down the end bosses. The problem shows up later: despite careful play, you eventually get one-shot, and the frustration sets in. Palsteron’s answer comes down to a simple ratio: 2,000 life versus 8,000 energy shield.

Switching over runs through Chaos InoculationChaos Inoculation, which sets life to 1 in exchange for immunity to chaos damage and bleed. Bleed immunity matters just as much as the other one: bleed goes straight through energy shield, so it had to be covered. Once the keystone is taken, life and chaos resistance become dead stats on your gear. In return, you have to convert damage nodes into shield nodes: expect about 30% less damage. Only make the switch if you already feel like you have damage to spare and are too fragile.

The final piece is called Rakiatas FlowRakiatas Flow, and it costs what it costs for a reason. Hits from the supported skills treat the enemy’s values as inverted: a 40% resistance becomes -40%, meaning 133% more damage in this example, and the gap grows with the target’s resistance. The consequence is that you have to remove Frost BombFrost Bomb and Elemental WeaknessElemental Weakness from the setup, because they lower resistances, which cancels out the benefit. Even better: waystones that roll a monster elemental resistance percentage stop being a downside and become a bonus.

That objection is fair: why pay for a gem slot for an effect you already got from two spells? Because in actual play, those two spells aren’t always up. While mapping, monsters jump on you and hard content doesn’t leave time to calmly lay down debuffs. Beyond the damage, the gain is two fewer button presses and two big mana costs removed.

On mana, specifically: the problem is rarely a lack of regeneration. Check your gem levels first, then slot Efficiency supports wherever you can. In endgame, only Spell TotemSpell Totem can drop it in favor of a damage support if you’re feeling safe. Add the Efficient Casting instill, and stack maximum mana: between 600 and 1,100 mana isn’t the same pool or the same base regeneration.
