Build Overview

This Sorceress Varashta build revolves around a single skill: Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing. It shatters the entire screen and breaks frozen enemy packs in one hit. MisoxShiru, who leveled it in HCSSF (Hardcore Solo Self-Found: a single-life character, with no trading with other players), was reaching T15 maps within a day of entering the endgame, with gear he himself describes as laughable.

The heart of the build comes from the Disciple of Varashta ascendancy, added with patch 0.5.5. It grants access to Djinns: Navira, the Last Mirage for zone clearing, Kelari, the Tainted Sands for single-target damage via Kelaris DeceptionKelaris Deception and Kelaris JudgmentKelaris Judgment. Around them roams a small army of minions: Skeletal ClericSkeletal Cleric, Skeletal SniperSkeletal Sniper, Skeletal ReaverSkeletal Reaver, Skeletal ArsonistSkeletal Arsonist and Wolf PackWolf Pack. They tank, distract and add extra damage while you place your zones.

In practice, you alternate between Ice NovaIce Nova and Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing for most of the leveling process. The build is therefore played with two or three buttons. Once in the endgame, a Tame BeastTame Beast equipped with Frozen Ground Trail generates frozen ground automatically: the rotation then drops to a single button, and all you have to do is move forward.

Strengths / Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Dirt cheap: no mandatory unique items, the author pushed it in HCSSF all the way to T15 maps
  • Very tanky: minions soak up the aggro while the freeze locks down packs
  • Full-screen clear: frozen enemies shatter in a chain, one of the most satisfying visuals of the patch
  • Only two to three buttons, and just one once Tame BeastTame Beast is obtained
  • Simple power scaling: everything comes from minion levels on three item slots
  • Single-target sorted out by Act 2: Kelaris DeceptionKelaris Deception and Kelaris JudgmentKelaris Judgment carry the character all the way to the end

❌ Weaknesses

  • Damage ceiling in very late endgame: pushing past mid-endgame demands effort the build makes difficult
  • Djinns locked until Act 2: the early game is played without the build’s core mechanic
  • Full tree respec at ascension: keep 5,000 to 7,000 gold set aside
  • Guide stops at mid-endgame: the author hasn’t documented very late endgame yet

Recommended Equipment

Three item slots carry nearly all of your damage. On those three, only one stat matters: minion levels, as high as possible.

  • Sceptre: + minion levels. This is item number one, and it’s also the piece that provides the Spirit needed to sustain your minions
  • Helmet: + minion levels
  • Amulet: + minion levels
  • All other slots: maximum Life as the top priority, then resistances
  • Cold Resistance: push it as high as possible before Count Geonor, the Act 1 endboss fight that punishes a character poorly protected against cold the most
  • Lesser Glacial Rune and Lesser Storm Rune: socket them to fill in missing resistances rather than chasing the perfect item

No unique weapon or armour piece is required. The only unique item in the entire progression is a charm, Beiras AnguishBeiras Anguish, which the author equips starting from early endgame. It’s a comfort pick, never a prerequisite. The grid below shows the exact items used at each step, but they serve as an example: pick up whatever drops, keep whatever checks the right lines. For quick in-game filtering, MisoxShiru filters with this expression: d+% i.+mov|^+.*ion skills$.

Gameplay Tips

  • Set aside 5,000 to 7,000 gold before Act 2: switching to Disciple of Varashta requires reallocating the entire tree, and you want to be able to do it as soon as your ascendancy is done
  • Don’t take Tame Beast during the acts: it costs Spirit and loses you damage. Wait until you have enough Spirit on your sceptre and gear to sustain three or more minions on top of it
  • Position yourself behind your minions: they hold the line while you place Ice NovaIce Nova and Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing from behind
  • Frost Bomb before dense packs: it lowers Cold Resistance and makes the chain explosions far more reliable
  • Purity of Ice once you have the Spirit available: it’s the defensive layer that secures fast maps

What Makes the Varashta Sorceress Build Tick

Disciple of Varashta is a summoner ascendancy disguised as a spellcaster. It doesn’t give you classic minions but Djinns, entities tied to specific abilities that you trigger yourself. Navira, the Last Mirage powers Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing; Kelari, the Tainted Sands powers Kelaris DeceptionKelaris Deception and Kelaris JudgmentKelaris Judgment.

Everything starts with Freeze. Your enemies, once Chilled then Frozen, become fragile; Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing shatters them, and the fragments spread to the rest of the pack. Frost BombFrost Bomb lowers dense targets’ Cold Resistance to make this reaction reliable, while Ice NovaIce Nova keeps up the pressure while Navira recharges. Everything else in the gear only exists to make these two components stronger: the higher your minions level up, the faster packs cross the Freeze threshold.

The Act 2 Ascendancy Changes the Whole Character

For the whole of Act 1, you play without a single Djinn. You clear with EntangleEntangle and ContagionContagion, you switch to Essence DrainEssence Drain once The Rust King drops its gem, and you pick up BonestormBonestorm as single-target after The Executioner at Ogham Village. This setup exists only to get through the first act.

The switch happens right at the first ascendancy, in Act 2. From there on, you play the Djinns, and the passive tree you filled out during Act 1 no longer matches what your character actually does. The author’s guide stresses this point, and it’s the build’s only real constraint: arrive in Act 2 with 5,000 to 7,000 gold in your pocket to respec the tree immediately. Without that gold, you’ll be stuck with a mismatched setup for hours.

Skill Gem Progression Through the Acts

MisoxShiru details every quest reward, which spares you from guessing at league start. The Act 1 milestones: Renly’s gem for EntangleEntangle, the Abandoned Stash in Clearfell for ContagionContagion, The Devourer in The Mud Burrow to level up EntangleEntangle and pick up Zenith IZenith I. Areagne’s Hut in Grelwood grants the support gem UnleashUnleash for ContagionContagion.

Next, The Rust King (The Red Vale) unlocks Essence DrainEssence Drain: move Zenith IZenith I from EntangleEntangle over to Essence DrainEssence Drain at that point. The Rotten Druid in The Grim Tangle provides Chain IChain I for Essence DrainEssence Drain, and the rare from the Haunted Chest in the Tomb of the Consort gives Swift Affliction ISwift Affliction I for ContagionContagion. Each step on the skill gem bar above corresponds to one of these milestones.

Three Buttons, Then One

The rotation evolves as the game progresses. During the acts and early endgame, you alternate between Ice NovaIce Nova to maintain Chill and Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing to trigger the shatter, with Kelaris DeceptionKelaris Deception and Kelaris JudgmentKelaris Judgment reserved for rares and bosses. Three buttons, plus the minions to recast every so often.

A Tame BeastTame Beast equipped with Frozen Ground Trail removes the first button: Frozen Ground generates itself under your feet, and Naviras FracturingNaviras Fracturing is enough to clean it up. The author advises against picking it up too early: during the acts, the Spirit spent on the beast is Spirit taken away from your minions, and you lose net damage. The right time comes when your sceptre and gear provide enough Spirit to sustain three minions or more on top of the beast.

How Far This Build Takes You

MisoxShiru is upfront about this: he has played the build up to mid-endgame and hasn’t documented beyond that point yet. Its progression stays solid throughout the campaign and early endgame, and he says himself that pushing further gets more demanding, without being out of reach.

In practical terms, that means you have here a league starter that gets you into T15 maps with almost nothing, but not a high-budget end-of-season project. That’s exactly what you ask of a league starter: reach endgame quickly, stack up currency, and then decide whether to stick with it or switch to another character.
