Build Overview
This Varashta Sorceress build doesn’t cast spells: it commands djinns. The
unique Disciple of Varashta ascendancy grants access to minion command skills that play exactly like spells, with the same range and responsiveness, but that scale with minion skill levels rather than spell damage. That mismatch is what makes the class interesting in SSF: the items that scale your power aren’t the ones everyone else is picking up.
The core of the kit comes down to two skills.
Kelaris Deception, the sand djinn, is both the clear tool and the single-target burst: an area explosion that leaves clones behind, and each recast detonates those clones for 50% additional stacking damage, up to 300%. Against a boss, you can just spam it.
Ruzhans Trap, the fire djinn, drops circles on the ground that turn into fiery tornadoes when a monster walks over them: it’s the one clearing packs as you push forward. A cold variant exists with
Naviras Fracturing, which is slower to set up and one the build’s author hasn’t tested in depth yet.
Both skills have a cooldown, and that’s where the build pivots.
Archon of Undeath, a buff picked up during the campaign, practically removes that cooldown while it’s active, and adds damage on top. Everything else in the build comes down to stacking minion skill levels for damage, and Energy Shield for survivability, until you cross
Chaos Inoculation at around 7,000 to 8,000 shield.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Single-target damage that snowballs on its own: every recast of
Kelaris Deception adds 50% damage, capped at 300%. No rotation to memorize. - Armor that nothing breaks:
Sacred Rituals converts 60% of your Energy Shield into armor. Since it comes from the ascendancy rather than gear, it can’t be broken or removed. - Three battlefield damage types wiped out at once:
Chaos Inoculation grants immunity to chaos, poison and bleed. - Built for SSF: no unique is required to reach T15 maps, everything can be crafted.
- Same setup for clearing and bossing: no weapon or gem swaps between the two.
- Huge scaling ceiling: the build can carry
Voices,
The Adorned and lineage support gems without changing its structure.
❌ Weaknesses
- A mana sink in the late game: without a well-rolled mana flask and the efficiency nodes on the tree, the rotation runs out of steam fast.
- A fragile stretch before Chaos Inoculation: until you have 7,000 to 8,000 Energy Shield, you take hits poorly.
- Dominion takes a while: the amulet anointment that unlocks the build’s real potential requires rare distilled emotions from the Delirium. Before it, the build is solid; after it, it moves up a whole tier.
- Archon of Undeath isn’t guaranteed: sometimes your two main skills don’t trigger it right away, so you need to fire off a no-cooldown minion command skill in the meantime.

Nothing on this list is mandatory. This is what the build’s author was wearing at level 90 after two days into the league, in SSF, with 8,600 Energy Shield, 242 Spirit and 64% physical damage reduction.
- Sceptre: a Rattling Sceptre with item level 79 or 80, worked with the Omen of Putrefaction. The one in the video rolls 142 Spirit, 58% increased damage for nearby allies (which also affects minion command skills), and +4 levels. Pick up every sceptre at that level you come across.
- Helmet: +2 to minion skill levels is enough early on, even with little Energy Shield. The eventual target is an Ancestral Tiara with two rune sockets, which allows for the Raven-touched Shard and therefore a second anointment.
- Body Armour: Vile Robe, worn from mid-progression all the way to the final build. This base has no implicit, and it’s precisely that absence which mechanically gives it more Energy Shield than the others. It drops as early as tier 1 maps, and the author’s loot filter highlights it automatically.
- Off-hand: a shield until the +2 minions focus drops. Block pairs well with Energy Shield, which needs a damage-free window, around 3 seconds here, to recharge. The focus is obtained by desecrating a suffix on any item level 65 focus.
- Amulet: a rare Lunar Amulet in the final build, anointed Dominion. The chase target remains the Breach tree amulet, whose implicit grants a spirit skill;
Wolf Pack is the one to look for, it frees up 60 Spirit points. - Rings:
Evergrasping Ring on one side, since its chaos damage taken costs nothing since you’re immune to it, and it grants 21% of damage converted to chaos to minions. On the other, a resistance ring with rarity. - Charms: all three slots end up as uniques: Rite of Passage, Beiras Anguish and Nascent Hope in the video’s build. Before that, basic charms against freeze, ignite and bleed do the job.
- Belt: triple resistance with charms while waiting for better. Then a belt with +2 minion levels from the Breach tree, or
Mageblood if you’re aiming for movement speed and rarity. - Jewels: maximum Energy Shield and minion critical strike. When min-maxing, five modifiers with increased effect prefixes, then
Voices (the Simulacrum’s unique jewel) to fit in more. - Mana Flask: the biggest recovery possible, corrupted for the extra 3% quality. It’s not a luxury, see the weaknesses section.
Gameplay Tips
- Before your first map: sort out your resistances, upgrade your flasks and gems. Runes socketed into your gear are there to plug resistance gaps.
- Level 65 is the real milestone: it unlocks the fourth support slot on djinn skills.
Heft goes on
Kelaris Deception,
Fire Penetration I on
Ruzhans Trap. It’s also the level required to wear the Vile Robe. - Switch everything to Energy Shield: moving out of campaign pieces into full Energy Shield is the most cost-effective survivability gain of the entire progression.
- Push to tier 15 as fast as possible: that’s where good bases and high item levels drop. Atlas passive tree map sustain makes the difference in getting there.
- If Archon of Undeath doesn’t trigger: chain into the djinn command that has no cooldown. It always ends up removing the buff, unlike the two main skills, which have to wait out their cycle.
- Ascendancies: the third from level 60 onward at the Trial of the Sekhemas, once the guaranteed three-tier barrier is obtained at the second interlude. The fourth at the same place, around 85-90.
- Idol of Feri: this rare augment socket goes in the sceptre and drops from monsters influenced by the Mearean Wisps. It helps a lot with the mana question.
How the Varashta Sorceress build works: three djinns, one engine
Kelaris Deception and
Ruzhans Trap do most of the work, but they share the same source of power: minion skill levels. A +2 on a helmet, a +4 on a sceptre, a +2 on an amulet: these numbers add up and carry over to both djinns at once. That’s why the gear list above almost always chases the same stat, whatever the slot.
The third command skill in the kit isn’t there for damage. It has no cooldown, and that is precisely what makes it useful: it acts as a safety net when the other two haven’t triggered
Archon of Undeath. The trio therefore plays out as a two-tier system: two skills that hit, and one that keeps the engine running.
Archon of Undeath and the Dominion anointment: the tier that changes everything
Archon of Undeath grants near-total cooldown reduction and extra damage. The catch is its downside: once it expires, a 20-second window forbids regaining it. On paper, that caps the build’s tempo.
Dominion removes that window. It’s a hidden amulet anointment, and its effect is structural: the buff becomes available again immediately, which amounts to keeping it up permanently. The build works without it, but the power spike when it lands is clear. It farms from Delirium: beat the Raven Trickster to unlock Potent Liquid Contempt, rare distilled emotions that drop from construct-type map bosses affected by Delirium. The author provides a search string in his video description to spot these maps on the atlas.
Sacred Rituals: Energy Shield becomes armour
Two of the four remaining ascendancy points go into defence, and the second is the more interesting of the two.
Sacred Rituals grants 60% of Energy Shield as additional armour, which applies to physical damage reduction. Because this armour comes from the ascendancy rather than a piece of gear, it can’t be broken or stripped by a monster.
The direct consequence: every point of Energy Shield gained counts twice. At 8,600 Energy Shield, the author shows 64% physical damage reduction without investing a single item slot into armour. The other point shaves a second off the Energy Shield’s recharge delay, bringing it down to around 3.75 seconds. That’s what makes
Convalescence indispensable: it retriggers the recharge on demand.
The three pillars of early endgame crafting
Solo self-found means crafting your own gear, and the video boils that down to three tools.
- Greater Orbs of Augmentation and Transmutation give higher tiers on the modifiers that matter, starting with Energy Shield.
- Essences of Enhancement add a guaranteed, decent percentage of Energy Shield to a magic item. You target them via an atlas tree node. The bases you’re after are ones that already carry a flat Energy Shield roll of tier 4 or better.
- Abyssal currency deterministically adds a hybrid Energy Shield prefix. The combo is an Omen of Sinistral Necromancy plus a Preserved Rib. Without the omen, the rib alone still works: you then aim for a prefix and hope for the best, and landing a suffix instead isn’t a big deal.
Once three good prefixes are in place, exalts finish the item, followed by quality and rune sockets. A step above that, Omens of Putrefaction turn a rare item into a desecrated rare: all of its modifiers become desecrated and get revealed at the Well of Souls. Save these for sceptres and foci, to chase that +2 to minion skill levels.
Atlas strategy and min-max chase items
The proposed order is simple. Delirium first, because it’s close to the starting point and unlocks the amulet anointment. Then the Fortress, for two things only: essences and map sustain. Then a few points on the Abyss side, which feed both crafting and omens. Back to Delirium to farm Dominion, and finally Breach, where minion-specific items drop, like +2 level belts.
Beyond that, the list of items that truly advance a Varashta Sorceress build narrows down to lineage support gems and unique jewels.
Kurgals Leash is excellent early on
Kelaris Deception: it grants Unholy Might, converting 30% of damage to chaos on each use of a minion command skill. Uul-Netols Embrace works very well on the same skill,
Xophs Pyre on the cooldown-free command.
Amanamus Tithe, combined with
Infernal Legion I and
Wolf Pack, guarantees three rare abyssal modifiers permanently. On the jewel side, double corrupted
The Adorned increases the effect of rare jewels as well as corrupted magic jewels: it’s the final piece of the puzzle, not the first.
