Build Overview
This mercenary caltrop poison bomber build designed by josiahyeet is built around a radical principle: pressing no active skill button at all in combat. Everything starts from dodging: every dodge triggers, via
Cast on Dodge a
Salvo of 12 to 20
Trail of Caltrops that drop to the ground and explode in a chain, with zero player input.
The core of the build revolves around the unique
Splinter of Lorrata, which allows stacking an almost unlimited number of poison stacks — normally capped at just a few stacks. The catch is that this weapon deals no base damage at all. The solution comes from
Trail of Caltrops, whose base damage is independent of the weapon and scales with gem level, much like a war cry. By stacking gem level, the Gemling alternate quality, and a tree geared toward physical damage, every caltrop hits hard, and every stacked poison pushes closer to millions of damage per second.
Result announced by the author: roughly 2 to 3 million single-target damage on the Arbiter, the ability to clear a 200% Delirium while staying mobile and tanky, all without needing
Headhunter,
Mageblood or
Palm of the Dreamer to function.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Zero active skill to press: all the damage comes from dodging via
Cast on Dodge, the player only needs to move - No chase item required: no need for
Headhunter,
Mageblood or
Palm of the Dreamer to make the build function - Minimal entry budget: a single build-enabling piece (the amulet) is enough to start the first maps
- Solid clear and bossing: capable of clearing a 200% Delirium while staying mobile and tanky (evasion/ES)
- Competent single target: around 2 to 3 million damage recorded on the Arbiter
- Highly scalable: adding active skills can double clear speed and single target damage
❌ Weaknesses
- Dependence on one specific piece: without the amulet that grants
Trail of Caltrops for free, the poison stacking from
Splinter of Lorrata remains very limited - Gradual power ramp-up: poison stacks need to build up before exploding into big damage, which creates a slight ramp-up time
- Ascendancy not finalized: one point remains temporary while waiting to meet the attribute requirements to switch to the critical immunity node
- 100% automated gameplay: very little active control, which won’t suit players looking for an engaging gameplay

- Weapon:
Splinter of Lorrata — the unique that lets you stack an almost unlimited number of poison stacks, despite having no base damage of its own - Amulet: Lament — grants an additional free
Trail of Caltrops and can be crafted with projectile skill level rolls - Scepter (offhand weapon): a recent scepter with high Spirit (around 208), cheaper than classic
Discipline scepters, which additionally grants a free wolf as an
Invocation - Helmet: rare evasion/energy shield base, with the
Subterfuge Mask tree node taken to convert the helmet’s energy shield into additional evasion - Body Armour: Spirit and as much evasion as possible
- Gloves: Marksman modifiers with +2 to projectile skill levels and projectile damage/ailment magnitude
- Belt:
Darkness Enthroned — the alternate quality of
Trail of Caltrops (40% more physical damage) is the most important of the stacked auras; a socketed Rune of the Blossom provides additional Spirit - Rings: flat physical damage (
Splinter of Lorrata doesn’t work with elemental damage), then resistances and life - Boots: Decree of Flight — faster dodge roll and gain Guard equal to a percentage of missing energy shield for 4 seconds on each dodge roll
Gameplay Tips
- Never play without the Lament amulet: it’s what unlocks the double
Trail of Caltrops and truly lets you reach 50 to 70 poison stacks - Cast on Dodge Setup: pair
Entangle and
Poison Spores — the vines hit everything, drop
Poison Spores, and your own
Caltrops poison the area to instantly detonate Toxic Pustules instead of waiting for the normal 15-second delay - Herald Chain: the
Herald of Blood +
Bursting Plague +
Herald of Plague combo creates a chain that explodes, poisons and bleeds weak monsters automatically, even without hitting them directly - Don’t neglect poison duration on the tree: caltrops only deal 2 seconds of base poison, so duration nodes matter just as much as magnitude
- To go budget: only the amulet is essential, everything else (
Cast on Dodge included) can wait — even rolling slowly without the full setup, the build already one-shots bosses - To go further: add
Entangle as a self-cast at 5 links (
Magnified Area I,
Branching Fissures I,
Poison Spores) to spray the screen with spores before diving in and boost both clear speed and single target
Splinter of Lorrada and Trail of Caltrops: the core mechanic of the mercenary caltrop poison bomber build
It all starts from a simple problem:
Splinter of Lorrata lets you stack poison infinitely, but deals no base damage at all — it’s a deliberately « terrible » weapon. The poison magnitude applied depends directly on the strength of the hit landed, so a way had to be found to hit hard and often without relying on the weapon itself.
The answer is
Trail of Caltrops: unlike most skills, its base damage is independent of the equipped weapon and scales with gem level, somewhat like
Infernal Cry for a classic war cry. By stacking a high gem level (up to 31 on the main gem), the Gemling alternate quality that boosts physical damage, and a tree oriented toward physical and attack damage, each caltrop hits hard enough to generate substantial poison despite a 0-damage weapon.
Cast on Dodge: the Entangle and Poison Spores combo
The most technical part of the build lies in its
Cast on Dodge setup. Since attack skills aren’t allowed there, the build uses
Entangle, a skill that hooks vines onto anything it touches. The
Poison Spores support makes every hit target receive a Toxic Pustule, which normally explodes after a 15-second delay dealing attack damage — a delay far too long to be useful as is.
The trick is to poison the area around the spores with the caltrops generated by the dodge: this triggers the Toxic Pustule explosion almost instantly instead of waiting the 15 seconds, while also granting an extra poison stack on each explosion thanks to
Splinter of Lorrata. In practice, just charging into a pack of monsters is enough to chain the hook, explosion, and poisoning within a fraction of a second, with zero button presses.
Poison scaling: magnitude and duration on the skill tree
Two axes dominate this mercenary caltrop poison bomber build’s skill tree: poison magnitude and, above all, its duration. Caltrops indeed only inflict 2 seconds of poison by default, which is far too short to let stacks build up to the critical mass being sought.
The build compensates through dedicated nodes (+40 seconds of poison duration, then +10% additional poison duration per poison already inflicted, up to 100%), reaching around 150% increased poison duration in total. The author rounds it out with random damage, evasion, and energy shield nodes, plus Running Gun (12% chance to fire two additional projectiles while moving), which synergizes directly with the multiple caltrops fired on each dodge.
Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy: Advanced Alchemy and critical immunity
On the ascendancy side, the build relies on the classic node used by most Gemling builds: Advanced Alchemy, which grants gem quality along with a dexterity requirement reduction — and which, unlike skills such as Molten Shower, works well on the skill granted by
Trail of Caltrops.
Virtuous Barrier remains a temporary choice for now, until the author fulfills the attribute requirements needed to switch to the node that removes any critical damage bonus from incoming hits — one of the most underrated ascendancy points in the game for becoming fully immune to critical hits early in the tree.
How to progress the build
This build is designed to be expanded gradually. On the gear side, the author’s long-term goal is a helmet with an improved projectile damage mod, an amulet with extra Spirit (to free up the
Darkness Enthroned belt in favor of
Headhunter or
Mageblood without losing anything), a
Splinter of Lorrata with three socket slots, and gloves pushed to an unlimited budget (extra projectiles, damage, resistances).
On the gameplay side, several avenues for expansion are mentioned: replacing
Wind Dancer with
Berserk for a bigger damage multiplier (provided life regeneration is solved), playing
Entangle as a self-cast 5-link to cover the whole screen with Poison Spores before charging in, or trying
Spearfield to stack differently. For players with an unlimited budget, the unique amulet Voices is still cited as an overpowered boost for any build.
