Build Overview
This Monk
Shield Wall build relies on the Martial Artist ascendancy introduced with patch 0.5 and on a rather unexpected skill combo:
Hollow Form, which creates spectral projections of yourself, is used to trigger Shield Wall and then Sunder in sequence.
Shield Wall raises shield walls that explode when struck by
Sunder, dealing massive physical damage spikes while applying Sundered Armor, a debuff that further increases the damage taken by the target.
The second core piece of the build is Way of the Stone Fist, the ascendancy notable that turns any equipped gloves into their « Fist of Stone » version. Paired with the unique gloves
Lochtonial Caress, it generates endurance, frenzy, and power charges on every hit landed by your spectral projections — which count as allies. Since
Hollow Form consumes a power charge to create an additional projection, the build sustains a nearly infinite power charge generation loop, with no dedicated investment required.
The result is an extremely cheap build (a few Divine Orbs are enough), fully playable in SSF (Solo Self-Found), that two-taps pinnacle bosses and clears absurd 200% maps with ease once the quality-of-life investments (curse immunity, slow reduction, effect duration) are in place.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Very high melee damage: two-taps most pinnacle bosses even in SSF with modest gear
- Ridiculously low entry cost: playable for a few Divine Orbs, with no mandatory chase item
- Infinite power charge generation: the Way of the Stone Fist +
Lochtonial Caress loop fuels the build with no dedicated investment - Very tanky once optimized: evasion/armor/energy shield hybrid with
Ghost Dance, hard to kill even in overloaded packs - Near single-button gameplay once the curse immunity and slow reduction nodes are acquired
- Huge room for growth in trade league (gear, gems, budget well beyond what the SSF video shows)
❌ Weaknesses
- Average clear speed: damage is directional (along the axis of your walls), unlike
Whirling Assault builds that hit in a 360° radius - Clunky feel early in the build: before investing in movement penalty reduction and attack speed, the gameplay can feel slow
- Finicky mana sustain: requires the Well of Power anoint (
notable Well of Power) to feel smooth, otherwise the mana flask must be pressed regularly - Requires precision: single-target damage depends on properly positioning your walls on the boss, poor placement drastically reduces damage

Endgame
11 skills • 48 gemmesRecommended Equipment
- Weapon (mace): very cheap to obtain. Only 4 affixes matter: damage gained as extra damage (via essence), damage increased against enemies with fully broken armour, melee skill levels, and attack speed.
- Shield: aim for maximum armour (flat armour, % armour, hybrid armour/stun threshold). Very easy to craft since the shield only has 7-8 possible prefixes in total.
- Gloves — Lochtonial Caress (unique): essential piece, transformed into the Fist of Stone version via the ascendancy. Ideally corrupted for +1 level to all melee skills.
- Helmet — Vestige of Darkness (unique): makes physical damage contribute to chilling and freezing enemies, synergizes perfectly with
Freezing Mark. Also summons a Bodark companion that explodes your walls. - Belt: a
Headhunter is a nice optional upgrade but absolutely not necessary — a basic resistance belt is more than enough. - Boots: prioritize movement speed, with « armour also applies to energy shield » if you’re scaling armour.
- Amulet: aim for +3 levels to all melee skills, with the
notable Well of Power (
notable Well of Power) anoint for mana sustain. - Rings: flexible, mainly used to cap resistances and cover missing attributes.
- Alternative chest — Swiftstalker Coat (unique): 30% reduction to slow debuff power, very useful for smoothing out gameplay.
Gameplay Tips
- Skill order in Hollow Form: slot Ground Slam BEFORE Shield Wall — the explosions then land exactly when the walls appear, which makes the gameplay much smoother than the reverse order.
- Aim your walls: damage is directional. On bosses, properly orienting your shield walls is essential to maximize single target.
- Open with Devour: cast Devour on the bells of
Hollow Focus when entering a pack to immediately trigger
Thrill of the Kill and
Blazing Critical. - Invest in movement penalty reduction:
Mobility (support on
Hollow Form) and the dedicated passive tree nodes make the build much more pleasant to play. - Prioritize curse immunity: the hidden Hollow Keeper node (accessible via two specific notables on the passive tree) provides a massive reduction to the effect of curses and non-physical slows.
- Keep a mana flask handy as long as the
notable Well of Power anoint is not in place — mana sustain remains tight without it.
Core Mechanic: Shield Wall & Sunder via Hollow Form
Hollow Form is a channeled skill that creates spectral projections of yourself, each executing the melee skill socketed into it before vanishing. When multiple skills are slotted, they trigger one after another in the chosen order. By placing Sunder followed by Shield Wall, each channel sends a projection to create a shield wall, immediately followed by a projection that shatters it with Sunder.
Shield Wall scales directly with the armour of the equipped shield (5 to 7 added physical damage per 15 points of armour) and deals 100% additional damage — 140% with sufficient quality — if the wall is destroyed by one of your own skills. Sunder, on the other hand, has almost no damage scaling of its own: its role is to shatter walls, apply Sundered Armor (which further increases physical damage taken by enemies with fully broken armour) and multiply hits to generate as many charges as possible via
Lochtonial Caress.
Infinite Power Charge Generation
The loop relies on three elements: Way of the Stone Fist (a notable from the Martial Artist ascendancy) transforms any equipped gloves into their Fist of Stone version, including uniques.
Lochtonial Caress gloves, once transformed, grant a chance to generate an endurance, frenzy, or power charge for your allies on every hit landed in your presence. And your spectral projections from
Hollow Form count as allies.
The result: every projection that hits an enemy has a chance to grant you a power charge, which
Hollow Form immediately consumes to create an additional projection — which itself has a chance to generate a new charge. This loop sustains itself indefinitely, guaranteeing a near-continuous flow of power charges without any dedicated investment in the passive tree.
Damage Scaling: Rend, Devour and Pounce
Beyond the Shield Wall/Sunder combo, several secondary skills provide « damage gained as » bonuses that stack:
- Rend: consumes a power charge to grant 50% of damage gained as lightning damage — a very generous buff, to be used as often as possible.
- Devour + Hollow Focus:
Hollow Focus spawns bells near you, which always critically strike and count as executions. Combined with
Thrill of the Kill (+25% lightning damage on execution) and
Blazing Critical (+15% fire damage on critical hit), Devour on a bell grants up to 40% additional damage. - Pounce + Freezing Mark: combined with
Vestige of Darkness (physical damage contributes to freeze), the target marked
Rime triggers 30% of damage gained as cold damage.
These three secondary skills are considered optional — the build works without them, but they provide a meaningful damage boost for minimal investment.
Smoothness and Defenses: Curse Immunity and Ghost Dance
Once the damage is in place, the priority shifts to smoothing out the gameplay. The build invests heavily in reducing the movement penalty while channeling (support
Mobility + dedicated tree nodes), as well as in curse immunity and reducing the strength of slows — two recurring nuisances while mapping (frozen ground,
Temporal Chains). The hidden Hollow Keeper node, unlocked via two specific notables on the passive tree, provides a massive reduction to curse effect and 35% of non-damage hits taken.
On the defensive side, the build hybridizes evasion, armour, and energy shield.
Ghost Dance restores energy shield on every hit taken based on evasion, which makes this resource nearly self-sufficient without any dedicated investment in its regeneration. Combined with a tree node converting the equipped chest armour’s evasion into maximum energy shield, the build takes hits remarkably well for such a low cost.
Mana Sustain with Well of Power
Mana consumption is the build’s main point of friction: consuming so many power charges via
Hollow Form quickly drains the pool. The most effective solution remains anointing
notable Well of Power (
notable Well of Power) on the amulet, which restores 5% of maximum mana on every power charge consumed. Combined with a quality mana flask (ideally corrupted), sustain becomes largely manageable, even though a few flask uses remain necessary during prolonged combat.
