On the Anaheim Convention Center stage, a voice asks the question right before the screen cuts to black: « what if we take vanilla and really plus it up? » Holly Longdale returns, says « yes » three times in a row, and drops the line everyone had been waiting for since July: « yes, this is Classic Plus. » The game itself carries a different name than the one the community had been using for months. It’s officially called World of Warcraft: Forever, already shortened everywhere to WoW Forever, and Blizzard just locked in a worldwide release date: November 4, 2026.
The countdown comes down to one number dropped on stage: seven weeks. Beta this Thursday, September 17, worldwide launch on November 4. The announcement closes out months of rumors fueled by a July leak and an early September survey that plenty of players had already taken as confirmed.
WoW Forever confirms what the rumors had been saying since July
Back in August, the site already rounded up everything the community thought it knew about this ghost Classic+. The name is what caught everyone off guard: nobody had guessed Forever, and most bets were on a plain Classic+ tacked onto the game’s logo. Everything else lines up almost point for point with the leak and the survey.

Blizzard also confirms the positioning: WoW Forever replaces neither the modern game nor historic Classic, it lives alongside both. British outlet VGC sums up the strategy in one line, coexist rather than pick a side. That caution also answers a reality that twenty years of legal war against private servers made obvious: vanilla nostalgia has a captive audience, one Blizzard no longer wants slipping toward projects it has been suing for two decades.
The timeline itself is new: the story picks up right after the fall of Lordaeron in Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, released the same day as the ceremony, and stops just before the opening of Molten Core. That’s year one of original vanilla, with a future Blizzard calls unwritten: stories that could have happened, and others that never did.
Level 60 becomes a choice, not a checkpoint
The most concrete change comes down to one line from Holly Longdale on stage: « we are all going to meet up on our original continents, embark on the journey to 60, and stay at 60 indefinitely. » Her reasoning fits in one sentence too: « we don’t want to race ahead and leave our accomplishments, our gear, and our friends behind. »
That’s the real signature of WoW Forever: progression will no longer come from an expansion that pushes the level cap higher, but from content updates at level 60, new zones, new dungeons, new raids, without ever aging out gear or scattering a guild across a higher tier. It’s the model that has kept vanilla private servers running for twenty years, now owned outright by Blizzard itself.
A tight schedule, from Thursday to December 9
The WoW Forever schedule comes down to three dates. According to Blizzard, the beta opens this Thursday, September 17, and the game is already playable on the BlizzCon show floor, the convention’s hands-on demo area. Worldwide launch is set for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT, around midnight Paris time going into November 5. The first two raids won’t open until December 9.

The content planned for launch was detailed at the What’s Next panel, right after the ceremony, not on the main stage.
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| New regions | 4 zones: Mount Hyjal, Shen’dralas, Riverglades, Zephras Isle |
| Dungeons | 9, including Hall of Thanes, Ruins of Lordaeron and City of Dalaran |
| Raids | Hyjal Summit (20 players) and Barrow Deeps (10 players), opening December 9 |
| Quests | over 1,000 new ones, spanning the leveling path from 1 to 60 |
| Battleground | Darkspear Islands, 15-versus-15, available at launch |
The packs, with no prices announced yet
WoW Forever is included in the standard subscription, with no separate purchase required. The optional extras come in four tiers listed on Blizzard’s pre-purchase page.

| Pack | Contents |
|---|---|
| Skyborne Heroic Pack | Skyborne race, mount, cosmetics, name reservation, 1 Invite-A-Friend code |
| Skyborne Epic Pack | the Heroic pack, plus beta access, 30 days of game time and 3 Invite-A-Friend codes |
| Warcraft Forever Collection | limited edition available until January 11, 2027, with everything above plus Warcraft III: Reforged and the Forsaken Kingdom campaign |
| Collector’s Edition | physical version, sold on the Blizzard Gear Store |
None of these tiers had a price listed on the pages checked. Better to wait for an official figure than to convert from a U.S. price that doesn’t exist yet.
Skyborne and Darkspear Islands, the PvP angle
The new Skyborne race starts on Zephras Isle, between levels 1 and 12, with a faction choice at character creation rather than a locked-in race. On the Horde side, it unlocks the Shaman alongside the Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid. On the Alliance side, it’s the Mage that joins the same list. That breakdown comes from the What’s Next panel, not from the ceremony.
This choice reproduces exactly the asymmetry that fueled two decades of arena and battleground debates in original vanilla. Shaman locked to the Horde, Mage locked to the Alliance: each side inherits a kit the other can’t copy. Anyone hoping for a fix to that historic imbalance will be disappointed. Blizzard is keeping the line, not correcting it.
Darkspear Islands is where the real change happens: a 15-versus-15 battleground, available right at launch. Original 2004 vanilla shipped with no battleground at all, and it took several months for the first one to show up. This time, faction competition starts on day one, not months later.
Update, September 13: the What’s Next panel, held right after the opening ceremony, detailed the game’s design principles, regions, dungeons, classes and roadmap.
No flying mounts, no level scaling: the game’s guiding rules
The idea goes back to 2020, when part of the community was already asking for a game built on vanilla rather than another expansion. Season of Discovery, in 2023, served as a test to measure how far the change could go without breaking vanilla’s identity. By mid-2024, Blizzard had made up its mind: the project was possible.
The rules are strict. No flying mounts. No level scaling, the automatic difficulty adjustment that scales a zone to the player crossing it. Azeroth stays a dangerous world, where preparation and cooperation matter more than speed. And no future expansion will ever raise the level cap: « our catchup system is quite simple. Play the game, » the Classic team summed up on stage.
Four regions built for a world that was never done growing
Mount Hyjal opens the list: an endgame leveling zone built around Darkwhisper Gorge, home to Hyjal Summit and one of three entrances into Barrow Deeps. Shen’dralas occupies ruins players have glimpsed for twenty years between Mulgore and Desolace, with the Shen’dralar, Prince Tortheldrin, the Gordunni and Magram tribes, and ties to Maraudon and Razorfen Downs.
Riverglades stretches along the eastern coast of the Eastern Kingdoms, between Redridge, Burning Steppes, the Badlands and Swamp of Sorrow, spanning roughly levels 35 to 45. More than 150 quests pit humans, orcs, ogres, gnolls, goblins and murlocs against each other, in a story about daily life on that frontier rather than the fate of Azeroth. Zephras Isle, meanwhile, serves as a new starting zone between levels 1 and 12, where a group of highborne exiles sealed a pact with the wind spirits and built a civilization tied to Skywall.
The nine dungeons of WoW Forever, from level 13 to level 60
The panel detailed the nine dungeons planned for launch.
| Dungeon | Levels | What you’re up against |
|---|---|---|
| Hall of Thanes | 13-18 | Ironforge, Dark Iron dwarves suspected of trespassing (Alliance), the Horde has to sneak in |
| Ruins of Lordaeron | 15-20 | a necromancer moves into the ruins (Horde), the Alliance has to sneak in |
| Whelgar’s Excavation Site | 24-29 | the Wetlands, a titanic dig site, the Explorers’ League |
| City of Dalaran | 28-33 | Alterac, the magical barrier down, enchantments going haywire |
| Drowned City | 35-40 | ruins risen off the coast of Stranglethorn, trolls and nagas, a wrecked pirate ship |
| Krol’dok Stronghold | 40-55 | Riverglades, an outdoor dungeon, an ogre civilization, chanting cultists at night |
| Alcaz Prison | 48-53 | Defias against nagas, the prison where King Varian was said to have been held, accessible from the inside for the first time |
| Blackmaw Hold | 55-60 | Azshara, a furbolg city eaten away by corruption |
| Shaper’s Terrace | 58-60 | Un’Goro Crater, Titan structures and crystals of power, the team’s own comparison to Jurassic Park |
Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Skyborne: what the panel filled in
Barrow Deeps is sacred ground for the night elves, holding their most dangerous prisoners. The panel drops a hint nobody will miss: an infamous demon hunter was reportedly kept there. Hard not to think of Illidan. Hyjal Summit, the biggest launch raid, is where something has been draining the power from the lands around the summit, where Archimonde fell, and the loot on offer includes the first legendary weapon of WoW Forever.
On Skyborne, the panel fills in the ties that were missing: on the Horde side, the race works with the Earthen Ring, which opens up Shaman; on the Alliance side, it allies with the Kirin Tor, which unlocks Mage. Both sides also get new druid forms built specifically for the race, plus racials, customization options, voices and dances of their own.
Darkspear Islands: the PvP read
The mechanic chosen for Darkspear Islands blends two battlegrounds. The rules follow Eye of the Storm, a neutral flag to grab and carry, but the capture points work like Arathi Basin: interact with a flag, then hold position. On a level 60 with no level scaling, that combination genuinely changes things. A pure flag-running composition, effective in Eye of the Storm, becomes exposed if it can’t also hold a point over time, and a team that stacks everyone on one point loses the mobility needed to cut off the enemy flag carrier. Across twenty years of classic PvP, this is one of the rare rule changes that actually forces a fresh composition instead of copying an old meta.
The narrative dressing surprises too: the Horde joins the Darkspear trolls rather than a generic banner, and the Alliance answers through the Theramore Expeditionary Force, a faction pulled straight out of Warcraft III. A new PvP system was also mentioned in passing, with no detail, during the same panel.
Classes, items and systems: what changes at level 60
Priest, mage, hunter and druid talent trees are being reworked in the spirit of the 2005 and 2006 patches: filling gaps without erasing what makes each class unique. Paladins get a new seal for better tanking, plus talents for a bit of group healing. Out go the +1% talents, in come choices you actually notice. Hundreds of new items are coming with on-use or on-equip effects, including reworked classics like the Tidal Charm or Whitemane’s Chapeau. There’s also a pass on racials: +5% damage against beasts for dwarves, a 5% chance to drain health for undead.
WoW Forever’s new systems change how you play without touching the game’s art style, which the team calls « timeless. »
| System | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Camping | pitch a camp almost anywhere, other players craft there with their professions, a shared buff for anyone who sits a while |
| Legacy | perks unlocked on alts every time a character finishes the 1-to-60 journey |
| Transmog | entirely opt-in, on and you see everyone’s outfits, off and you see players as they really are |
| HD or SD models | toggleable game-wide, classic animations restored on the HD models |
| Riding skill | reworked to preserve the moment of earning your first mount |
| Controller | officially supported, already playable on the show floor |
Blizzard is also adding environmental effects, rivers flowing differently in Elwynn Forest, fog rolling into Duskwood, moonlight through the trees, without touching the art style, and folding in vanilla content left unfinished or unused back in the day.
The roadmap, through summer, and Hardcore mode
The announced schedule stretches well past December 9: more raids, dungeons, PvP updates and world content are coming. A box on the roadmap, sitting over summer, reads « revamped iconic raid » without saying which one. The original vanilla raids, Molten Core included, are deliberately still closed, since the story is set before they open. The team also dropped a double-edged line: « nothing is off the table. Not even a new class. » The gap visible on the roadmap around winter, though, has an answer: Hardcore mode is joining this new game too, and the collector’s edition carries the same nod, a statue of a dwarf and a bear, a direct reference to Hardcore and to a certain month back in November 2004.
On YouTube, streamer Asmongold reacted to the panel live, and the video posted on his Asmongold TV channel already tops 630,000 views. His reaction came down to two lines: « they’re actually doing it, » then « I’m just going to play it and see what it is. » His video sums up the mood of a good chunk of the community after twenty years of waiting.
