WoW Forever Beta: Largest Ever, Without a Single Figure

Dark and gold poster: a crowd of adventurer silhouettes pours through a stone gate toward a distant city, title BIGGEST BETA EVER and banner ZERO FIGURES

Article by Kami

On October 28, during Microsoft’s quarterly earnings presentation, Satya Nadella slipped in a line about World of Warcraft: « World of Warcraft had its largest beta in franchise history, » according to Output Lag. He gave neither a player count nor a character count.

A week before the November 4 launch, the WoW Forever beta therefore holds an official record, with no measurement behind it. Here is who said it, how the beta was handed out, what the unofficial censuses count, and what it changes for launch night.

Headline of the Output Lag article signed Steven Mills on October 28, 2026, with the beta and Microsoft call dates and a three-point summary
Output Lag, article by Steven Mills, October 28, 2026: Nadella’s line and the context of the quarter.

Nadella and Sharma: a record, no figure

Nadella’s line sits in the gaming paragraph of his prepared remarks. It follows the one on Minecraft, which reportedly reached « all-time highs in both engagement and revenue. » Asha Sharma, the head of Xbox, said for her part that Minecraft and WoW Forever had set records during the quarter, according to MMOHuts. Neither sentence says what is being counted: characters created, invited accounts, players connected at the same time.

The context weighs on the reading. Over the July to September quarter, Xbox revenue fell 2%, and hardware fell 14%. The figures come from MMOHuts and Output Lag, cross-checked by SimulationDaily and Insider Gaming: we could not open Microsoft’s own release.

Xbox lineJuly-September 2026Change over one year
Xbox revenue$5.379 billion ($5.508 billion a year earlier)-2%
Content and servicesdecline driven by third-party games and Game Pass, partly offset by Microsoft’s own games-2% (-1% at constant exchange rates)
Hardwarefewer consoles sold-14%
October-December forecast, content and servicesgrowth in the « mid to high single digits » (roughly 4 to 9%, our reading)increase expected
October-December forecast, hardwarestill decliningdecline expected

In a shrinking quarter, a line about a WoW Forever beta record makes a good speech paragraph. It does not make a measurement: Microsoft published no definition, no series of figures and no date for the count.

Longdale and Greenfield: « not ready » for the engagement

Holly Longdale, WoW executive producer, had got ahead of Nadella on the WoW Forever beta. Her PAX Australia keynote was scheduled for Friday, October 9 in Melbourne, according to Blizzard’s page, and PCGamesN (Ken Allsop, October 11) quotes her as saying: « In our recorded history at Blizzard there’s been no beta bigger than this. » She adds: « I don’t think we were ready for this kind of engagement. »

Output Lag’s headline has Blizzard saying it « wasn’t ready. » Longdale talks about engagement, in an answer that opens on « We’re delighted » and ends on « absolute magic. » In the excerpt we read, she mentions neither servers nor capacity.

Josh Greenfield, senior designer, had opened the series on September 18, the day after the opening: « the craziest numbers I’ve seen in 17 years working at Blizzard. » Blizzard raised the beta population cap twice, according to FRVR (Lewis White, September 28): on the 18th, then over the weekend of the 26th and 27th. Longdale wrote at the time: « we had to increase the WoW: Forever Beta population cap again. »

Four statements in six weeks, and none says whether the record covers characters created, distinct players or simultaneous connections.

A WoW Forever beta you could buy

Blizzard describes two ways in on its beta page. Buyers of an eligible digital pack, the $59.99 Skyborne Epic Pack or the Collection, got in automatically. Everyone else could sign up for free: « Players who have opted in can be selected to participate, » with invitations going out « throughout the test. » Blizzard also says it is inviting community veterans, press, fansites, friends and family.

A player quoted by Output Lag, on Reddit, sees a first: « It’s the first time in 14 years I actually got into a beta. » He points out that earlier betas were invite-only. That is one person’s account, not an established fact. It does raise the right question: the population cap was in Blizzard’s hands, and Blizzard raised it twice, and a paid pack opens the door to people nobody was inviting. Comparing the WoW Forever beta with an invite-only beta amounts to comparing numbers of seats handed out, as long as we do not know how many accounts each one let in.

The test window itself is known: opened on September 17, capped at level 20, then level 30 from October 1, and closed on October 21 according to Blizzard (Output Lag writes the 23rd). On the viewer side, Streams Charts recorded 807,223 for the September 12 announcement and 599,618 for the beta opening on Twitch, figures that our article on the audience sets against those of WoW Classic.

A million characters, according to unofficial counters

The only numbers available on the WoW Forever beta come from fan-run censuses. The ClassicPlus.io counter reports more than one million characters created, according to Output Lag, and Blizzard has published no figure of its own. WoW Forever Data shows, as of October 30, 1,148,135 characters « seen » since the September 17 opening: 557,723 on the Alliance side, 590,412 on the Horde side, and a median level of 17.

WoW Forever Data, October 30, 2026 count: an unofficial census, updated with each daily scan.

These numbers come with three caveats. A character is not a player: one account can create several. The site itself says it aggregates « the leading public census sources, » so its total does not necessarily confirm ClassicPlus.io’s. Finally, a total of characters says nothing about simultaneous connections, and that simultaneity is what builds queues.

What the WoW Forever beta means for November 4

Blizzard has published no capacity figure for the launch. Frank Williams, principal software engineer, said in the October 29 podcast: « the state at the end of the beta is what you can expect for launch. » The layering fixes (the parallel copies of the same zone) announced on October 23 point the same way: improve, without promising a continuous world.

The last load test, on October 21, was stuck for nearly an hour at realm selection, then held. At opening, every account with a subscription or active game time will enter at the same time: the beta gathered pack buyers and selected sign-ups, and the launch no longer has a sorting step. Our reading, with no Blizzard figure to back it: expect a queue during the first hours.

Two moves reduce the risk of losing that time. Install and update the client before midnight: the October 21 test required about 14 GB of extra download from a PC Games Hardware journalist who already had the game installed. Also decide your ruleset (Normal, PvP or roleplaying) in advance, because it cannot be changed. The game opens at midnight, Paris time, on the night of Wednesday, November 4 to Thursday, November 5, as our article on the launch time details.
