Build Overview
This Chronomancer build takes an off-meta approach centered around chaos, exploiting
Blackflame Covenant to convert all fire damage to chaos. With a pick rate below 2% in every league, Chronomancer is largely ignored by the community, but this build demonstrates the true potential of the ascendancy when fully optimized.
The core mechanic relies on the synergy between
Incinerate and
Time Freeze.
Time Freeze locks Bosses in place, preventing their actions and creating a safe window to channel
Incinerate without interruption. This combination allows stacking compound ignites that deal massive damage after 2–3 seconds of channeling.
Rather than following meta setups like
Comet spam, this build prioritizes control, safety, and consistency. For clearing,
Essence Drain and
Contagion efficiently handle dense packs through their spread mechanic. The build also uses
Blasphemy with
Temporal Chains to permanently slow all nearby enemies, significantly improving survivability.
Build Strengths
- Exceptional boss control:
Time Freeze locks any Boss in place, creating a safe window to channel
Incinerate without risk of interruption - Very safe playstyle:
Blasphemy +
Temporal Chains permanently slows all enemies in a wide radius, greatly reducing threats during mapping - Excellent single-target damage:
Incinerate‘s compound ignite system deals massive damage after 2–3 seconds of channeling, ideal for boss kills - Reliable energy shield sustain:
Convalescence instantly refills energy shield with a single click, providing emergency recovery in combat - Consistent clear:
Essence Drain +
Contagion provides safe and efficient clearing through chaos DoT spread
Build Weaknesses
- Blackflame Covenant dependency: The entire build relies on this unique item — without it, the fire → chaos conversion does not work. It is an absolute gatekeeper for the build
- Complex rotation with Chiming Staff: The optimal bossing setup requires a Chiming Staff with specific mods (ignite magnitude), which can be expensive to obtain
- Strict spirit requirement: A minimum of 37 spirit is mandatory on the body armour or amulet, otherwise the build does not function as intended with all spirit gems
Gem Setup by Step
This build offers 3 progression steps from leveling to the final build. Select a step to see the corresponding gem setup.
Campaign Leveling (around lvl 65)
7 skills • 26 gemsT1-15 Maps (Incinerate added/around lvl 65-80)
10 skills • 50 gemsEnd Game (juiced up Maps T15+/ around lvl 80-97)
11 skills • 57 gemsRecommended Equipment
- Weapon Set 1 – Chiming Staff : The main staff for bossing should have increased chaos damage, +6 to all spell skills, and most importantly increased magnitude of damaging ailments (essential mod for scaling
Incinerate ignites). Gain damage as extra fire damage (which converts to chaos) is also important - Weapon Set 2 – Wand + Focus : For mapping, use a wand with spell damage, chaos damage, +5 chaos spell skills, and increased cast speed. The focus should have the same stats with +2 spell skills
- Blackflame Amethyst Ring : The item that enables the entire build by converting fire ignites to chaos. Look for a roll with 61%+ increased ignite magnitude — that’s the only stat that truly matters
- Rare Ring : With
Blackflame already equipped, prioritize elemental resistances to cap easily, and increased chaos damage as a bonus - Ingenuity Belt : Crucial for boosting resistances while increasing the ignite magnitude of the
Blackflame Ring. An indispensable double benefit - Amulet : +3 to all spell skills, increased spell damage, increased maximum energy shield, and increased energy shield from equipped body armour. Allocate Crystallized Immunities for chill immunity
- Vortex Tribal Mask : Helmet with a +4 to all skills corruption for an additional damage boost
- Body Armor : MUST have a minimum of 37 spirit. Without it, the build cannot run all its spirit gems. 53+ spirit is ideal but 37 is the strict minimum
- Gloves : Elemental resistances + 60% increased effect of socketed items. This mod boosts runes socketed in the gloves, granting more ignite magnitude and
Wither magnitude - Boots : 35% movement speed, elemental resistances, and 60% increased effect of socketed items to increase energy shield and movement speed via runes
- Megalum Maniac Jewel : The most important jewel.
Spaghettification grants chaos damage, cast speed and attributes, but the key is
Dread Engineer’s Concoction which provides +35% magnitude against poisoned enemies. Since
Dark Effigy applies poison with Poison Support, this constantly boosts our ignites - Prism of Belief : +straight to all
Incinerate skills for additional single-target damage - Timeless Sapphire : Increased ignite magnitude, increased magnitude of damaging ailments with critical hits, and increased critical hit chance. Optimal scaling for critical ignites
Gameplay Tips
- Bossing rotation with Chiming Staff : First place
Sigil of Power, apply
Despair and
Thunderstorm, cast your spells on the Sigil up to stage 4, place
Dark Effigy twice, activate
Time Freeze, then channel
Incinerate for the kill. This sequence maximizes damage - Bossing rotation without Chiming Staff :
Thunderstorm →
Essence Drain →
Contagion →
Time Freeze →
Incinerate. A simpler setup but slightly less optimal - Time Freeze timing : Use
Time Freeze just before starting to channel
Incinerate to ensure the Boss remains still for the entire channel duration. It’s the key tool that makes the build viable against bosses - Mapping clear :
Essence Drain +
Contagion are enough for 90% of the clear. Let
Contagion spread naturally through dense packs.
Blasphemy +
Temporal Chains constantly slows enemies around you, increasing safety - Emergency sustain : Always keep
Convalescence available to instantly refill your energy shield in case of danger. It’s your panic button - Maximizing ignite DPS : Your ignites become truly powerful after 2–3 seconds of channeling
Incinerate. Don’t spam the skill — let it complete to maximize compound damage - Dark Effigy positioning : Always place two
Dark Effigy before a major Boss fight. They add constant DPS and apply poison with Poison Support, which activates the +35% magnitude bonus against poisoned enemies from your Megalum Maniac
How Blackflame Covenant transforms Incinerate
Blackflame Covenant is the unique that makes this build possible. Its mechanic converts all fire damage to chaos damage, but crucially, this conversion applies BEFORE damage increases in the Path of Exile 2 engine.
In practice, this means
Incinerate, which is naturally a fire spell, becomes a chaos spell. More importantly, the ignites it applies now deal chaos damage instead of fire damage. This conversion allows you to scale entirely with chaos damage on the passive tree, gems and equipment, instead of fire damage.
This synergy opens the door to massive scaling via chaos damage, chaos resistance reduction (
Despair), and
Wither charges (
Withering Presence). Without
Blackflame Covenant, this build simply could not work, as
Incinerate would remain a standard fire spell with limited chaos scaling.
Ignite Magnitude Scaling
Ignite magnitude is the most important stat in this build. You can think of it as an additional layer of spell damage, but one that applies only to ignites. For
Incinerate, this scaling becomes even more effective thanks to the compounding ignites system introduced in patch 0.4.
Incinerate‘s ignites start relatively weak, but become very powerful around the 2–3 second channeling mark. Each ignite stacks on top of the previous one, creating a snowball effect of damage. That’s why it’s essential to let
Incinerate complete rather than spamming the skill.
Here are the main sources of ignite magnitude in this build:
- Chiming Staff : The « increased magnitude of damaging ailments » mod is MANDATORY. It’s the single largest ignite magnitude boost from any piece of equipment
- Blackflame Amethyst Ring : A roll of 61%+ increased ignite magnitude is ideal. It’s the only mod worth looking for on this unique
- Ingenuity Belt : Boosts the ignite magnitude of the
Blackflame Ring through its multiplier effect on other items’ mods - Gloves with 60% increased effect of socketed items : Runes socketed in the gloves grant more ignite magnitude thanks to this multiplier
- Megalum Maniac Jewel (Dread Engineer’s Concoction) : +35% magnitude against poisoned enemies. Since
Dark Effigy applies poison, this is a permanent boost during Boss fights - Timeless Sapphire : Increased ignite magnitude and increased magnitude of damaging ailments with critical hits. Stacks with critical hit chance for optimal scaling
Weapon Set Configuration
This build uses a dual weapon set configuration to optimize both bossing and mapping. The playstyle difference between the two setups is significant:
Weapon Set 1 (Chiming Staff) – Bossing : The Chiming Staff is optimized to maximize
Incinerate‘s single-target damage. Priority mods are increased chaos damage, +6 to all spell skills, increased magnitude of damaging ailments, and gain damage as extra fire (which converts to chaos). This staff enables the full bossing rotation with
Sigil of Power.
Weapon Set 2 (Wand + Focus) – Mapping : The second set prioritizes cast speed and mobility for clearing. Both the wand and focus have spell damage, chaos damage, and increased cast speed. The focus brings +2 spell skills while the wand gives +5 chaos spell skills. This configuration makes
Essence Drain +
Contagion smoother and faster.
On the passive tree, the author mentions having accidentally swapped weapon sets during experimentation, but the logic remains the same. The first set is entirely focused on ignite magnitude, increased ignite magnitude from critical hits, and critical hit chance. The second set takes skill duration, curse magnitude, curse area, mana on kill, and mana efficiency for comfortable mapping.
Crafting the Chiming Staff: Omen Technique
The author shares an advanced technique to obtain the crucial « increased magnitude of damaging ailments » mod on a Chiming Staff. This mod is essential for scaling
Incinerate ignites, and here is how to guarantee it:
Step 1: Obtain a staff with a desecrated prefix (corruption). This is the necessary foundation for this method.
Step 2: Use Omen of Light combined with an Orb of Annulment to cleanly remove the desecrated prefix. This clears the staff while preserving the other mods.
Step 3: Activate Omen of Sinestral Necromancy AND another specific Omen (the author cannot recall the exact name in the video). This combination guarantees that an ultimate random modifier will be added to the staff.
Step 4: The key point is that « increased magnitude of damaging ailments » is a SUFFIX mod. By combining the two Omens from step 3, you force the staff to receive an ultimate prefix AND suffix, which includes the desired mod.
Step 5: Activate Omen of Echoes and roll the staff. In the video, the author obtains the mod on the first attempt. This method considerably increases the chances of getting the mod compared to standard random crafting.
This technique is advanced and requires specific Omens, but it allows you to obtain the build’s most important mod on the Chiming Staff in a near-guaranteed manner.
